Freedom of choice : That's what sets apart man from animal. But sadly not everyone have that choice. Some are deprived of it from birth and most go through periods when it is taken away from them although by and large they have the freedom to do what they want.
Santo's case is one where she has never enjoyed that freedom in life. While she was with her Nana, she did not feel the need to exercise it. Like a good obedient girl she did all that was expected of her including consenting to marry the guy who had been chosen for her. When he absconded, a man nearly thrice her age decided to marry her for his own business reasons. Again she had no choice but accept it. She was treated worse than a servant in her husband's house. Again she had no choice but to accept it. Now she has been ordered to dress up in rich clothes and put up a show for the visiting friends. Again she has no choice but to go along with this deceit.
DM's children have been living in the lap of luxury. They have, by and large, had the freedom of choice but the few instances when it was taken away from them, how furious they got.
Take Hiten for instance. When he realised that his father had stood guarantee for his loan how angry he was as he wanted to achieve success on his own.
Take Maulik. The guy could not bear his father asking questions where he was spending the money he gave him.
Now Kadambari could not digest the fact that she was not consulted in decisions relating to her life. They all feel rightfully angered at the 'injustice' of it all.And these were only a few occassions when they lost the freedom of choice.
But poor Santo. She has never ever had the freedom to choose anything in her life. That is the sad part of it all. Her status is no better than that of an animal.
