She reigned supreme for years, with her TV shows
occupying all the top slots. The czarina of television, Ekta Kapoor, was responsible for starting the trend of family dramas on the small screen
But things change. As the television landscape in India got more fragmented, with more channels and shows, Ekta's undisputed term ended. She went through a lull, but not for long. Ekta's back! Her Pavitra Rishta has slowly and steadily zoomed up the TRP charts and she also has shows across most general entertainment channels (GECs). Here's Ekta, in her own words, speaking about the ups and downs of life and how it's only made her a stronger person...

Ruling the roost and then a lull...
Yes, we were the only monopoly in the television industry. From occupying the top 25 slots for 2-3 years and then occupying top 15 slots for eight years to not having a single slot in the top 50... I've seen it all. But I never let anything affect me.

God and I:
Some people use spirituality as their crutch, I use it as my strength. People thought I used God! They felt I prayed because I was insecure and worried about losing what I had and then when the career low happened, they thought things would change. But nothing changed. I remained the same, I continued my temple visits and all the other rituals I followed. I have a strong sense of belief in my Almighty and myself. A career low is not the end of life. There are other things like one's family, health, your close people that are more important.

Calm and unfazed:
I was not down and depressed when my shows went off air or when no show occupied the top slots. Yes, during that phase I was not as busy as earlier and that was the irritating part! But I had a lot of fun. I got into social networking sites and it was great connecting with so many people.

I learnt a lot in this one year:
On the work front, my meetings with my company CEOs helped me see the problem ? that we were totally dependant on our seven telly shows. And the fact is that in any industry, be it television or films, no monopoly lasts forever. That's when we restructured and went through a complete change in attitude. I learnt a lot in this one year. We've launched so many people in the TV industry. But now we are looking to nurture people, show them fabulous growth. It's about growing together. Our functioning has changed. We have CEOs, there's group CEO Puneet Kinra, who takes the final calls. It's no longer my decisions alone. My mom continues to handle the production finances... no one can do it like her! Workwise for me it's been a great journey so far and I have a long way to go. I've met some wonderful people over the years. The one person I have utmost respect for in the TV industry is Uday Shankar of Star network. He's been the same with me from day one. I really admire him.

Future plans:
We are looking to branch out. I want our production house to become the one-stop place covering the entire gamut of things in the telly industry. And along with TV, there's films, new media etc... there's lots to do.

Aasiya Kazi

What does Valentine's Day mean to you?
It's a special day for loved ones, it can be celebrated with your family, and it's not just about your boyfriend. All these years I have celebrated this day with my family.

How do you plan to celebrate it?
Well, till now I don't have a boyfriend, but I still celebrate it, as the day after valentines, it's my parent's anniversary, so for me its not just one day of fun – there's a celebration of two days.

Its an old one😊
My Fundays
Prerna Wanvari
Kadambari aka Kaddu of the serial Bandini on NDTV Imagine has been winning plaudits for her acting

I grew up in Mumbai. The first 10 years of my life were spent in Chembur in a joint family. Then my grandparents, parents, brothers and I moved to Lokhandwala. Although as a child I was very quiet and obedient, I would look for excuses to stay away from home. My parents thought I wasn't up to any good.

I have always been interested in staying in the forefront of things. I was more inclined towards extra-curricular activities in school, always participating in dance programmes, athletics and school projects. I won prizes in the under-12 championships in athletics. I was also the school team captain in throwball. Right from my childhood I loved watching movies and listening to music. Today I get to do what I love the most, which is acting, and also spend time with my family and friends.

Though I was ragged and bullied in school, I loved being there. I went to St Anthony's Girls' High School till Class V, after which I went to Jankidevi Public School in Mhada. I had failed in maths in Class V but actually stood second in Class VIII!

Nothing matches what I did when I was in Class VII. I had gone to a shopping mall with a friend. We were trying on different clothes. While waiting for my friend who hadn't finished trying on hers, I felt the need to visit the loo. But I had to wait for her and she took quite a while. By the time she got out, I had wetted the floor of the changing room! When we stepped out, there were at least 20 people waiting for their trials. Imagine my embarrassment.

I am an extrovert and have always had a huge number of friends, but I am close to only a few of them. My younger brothers Mishaal and Manav are my greatest buddies. Both of them are very protective about me. My parents are the best I could have asked for. They have been pillars of support for me. I am blessed to have lived with my grandparents. They are precious gems for me. They have always taken good care of me and pampered me.

Cal Of The Night

City of Joy clawed for a piece of SRK, Ronit Roy played FBI cop to the hilt, Manish Malhotra's divas scorched the ramp while funky T-shirts made for good conversation starters

Top Cop

Ronit Roy, besides being an A-list television celebrity, also runs a security firm. Draped in a suave suit befitting an FBI agent, Roy was a rather charming gatekeeper to keep the riff-raff out.

One look at how teeming the lobby of ITC Sonar was and you'd get a clue as to how much star power SRK enjoys. Ronit Roy, at the helm of affairs here, added a glamorous touch to the usual bouncer clich.

Every once in a while, he'd drop in to cuddle up to his wife. An attentive hubby Ronit can be, never mind how television soap operas depict spouses!

Kasautii Zindagi Kay was initially centered on Anurag (Cezanne Khan) and Prerna (Shweta Tiwari), although Prerna remained the same but the spot light later shifted to Mr.Bajaj played by Ronit Roy and everyone liked the chemistry between Mr. Bajaj and Prerna. So when he was shown dead and Prerna was getting married to someone else, on public demand, Ekta had to bring back Mr. Bajaj as no one wanted to miss him in the show.

Sanjay Gupta announces release dates of The Great Indian Butterfly, Pankh

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, March 12, 2010 - 17:58 IST

Sanjay Gupta now treads a new path and is launching his new brand White Feather Arthouse Films. He is signalling off this journey with two films that are slated to chart new territories in the realm of 'new age sensibility' movies. The two films are The Great Indian Butterfly and Pankh.

The first film to be released is The Great Indian Butterfly that releases on the 26th of March, 2010. Directed by Sarthak Dasgupta, the film stars Aamir Bashir, Sandhya Mridul, Koel Purie and Barry John. The film has already been invited to prestigious film festivals like the Indo-America Arts Council Film Festival and the River to River, Florence Indian Film Festival, which is the first festival in the world to be devoted entirely to films from and about India. The Great Indian Butterfly is about a young couple searching for a mystical butterfly that brings peace, love, luck and happiness. Even though a simple story, the film recounts the complexities of a changing India. Says Sarthak Dasgupta, "We have made a difference in the world through the power of our ideas. The film tries to capture that unique Indian spirit. It's not esoteric and complex. It's a simple story of discovery in present day India". The Great Indian Butterfly will be releasing on March 26.

With Pankh, which releases on the 2nd of April they set out to present trailblazing movies. This film pushes the envelope so far that it has torn it open. It has already generated a raging controversy in the media. The film stars Bipasha Basu, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lilette Dubey, Ronit Roy, Sanjeeda Sheikh and introduces two new kids Maradona Rebello and Amit Purohit. It is directed by Sudipto Chattopadhyay a national award winning director. The film is a heart rendering tale of the plight of a young man with a traumatic past. It reveals the sordid reality of gender confusion within a dramatic and controversial context. About a young boy who plays a girl's role on screen. Says Sudipto, "This was a story that needed telling. It is a film that will touch every sensitive soul. Pankh is Bollywood's wildest take so far." Pankh will be releasing on April 2.
