BV has done its bit for removing the stigma around widowhood. I liked anandi rubbishing DS's talk about abshagun and persuading her to wear mehendi etc. But BV has failed miserably in attacking a fundamental evil: Son obsession which is at the root of our patriarchal-feudal structures and the skewed relationship between male and female. Till this is strongly questioned, every social message will be just a superficial timepass or one of BV's stupid voiceovers. Shiv was like a breath of fresh air when he insisted that the females of the household sit down together with the menfolk for dinner. In his family men went into the kitchen to cook. Where is all that? Male and female stereotypes have reverted to with a vengeace. A stands with a tray while the men do taarif of her cooking. All the progressiveness of the family has vanished and the initially sensible Ira is now on the beaten track of apna khoon and mera beta, mera khok etc. and meenu, she was so elegant and classy and matter of fact. I was really impressed that she offered shagun to anandi without any hoo-hah about her being a widow. It is so heart rending to see her being transformed into this weepy, red-maanged, red-sareed, red-lipsticked dulhan forever falling at her pati's feet. He is clearly put off by the bhayankar creature in front of him but she just wont let go of the patni devotion act. Meenu has aged by 10 years in her red dulhan avatar. Even j and gauri were a normal couple. He cooked and cared for her. Now he is the pathetic helpless husband of a weepy, stupid waaris-giving machine. The least BV can do is end the pretence and at least stop the preachy voiceovers. Saas bahu is bad enough but saas bahu with pretensions is worse.
