I understand that Sanchi and Ashi's situations are different. However their mental states could be comparable, even if not in terms of rituals.

However anybody in this forum could you explain why we have this ritual/system of engagement and not a direct marriage? I think most of the religions and communities all over the world have the system of ENGAGEMENT BEFORE MARRIAGE. This time usually between 3-6 months.

As far as I have been told by different communities in different parts of the world; it's just to allow the boy and girl to mingle up to check if they are suitable to each other for a life long relationship. So if one feels that the relationship if no good then he/she can break it.

People I am talking of the 21st century and not 18th century betrothal.
