Replacements work in favour of higher TRPs

Recently when actor Pratyusha Banerjee aka Anandi was unable to give the required time to the show Balika Vadhu, she was replaced by Toral Rasputra. There were fears that the TRPs could drop but viewers have accepted Toral as Anandi.

There are other recent examples as well where the TRPs have remained constant and even shot up for some, thus breaking the rule that a show loses its sheen, when a lead actor is replaced.

"Initially, when Avika was replaced by Pratyusha as a grown-up Anandi, the audience took time to accept the new face. But they gradually got used to it. I was nervous on the sets because there were high expectations but friendly co-stars helped me settle in," says Toral.

According to producer Yash Patnaik, films are star driven whereas shows are character/content driven. "In daily soaps, a show makes an actor bigger. Nobody knew Pratyusha Banerjee before Balika Vadhu orGiaa Manek before Saath Nibhana Saathiya. There are factors like a strong script, right promotion by the channel and a strong image that make a character popular," he explains.

Of course there have been shows that have been called off air after one of the characters quit. Like when Barun Sobti quit the show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?. However, such examples are an exception rather than the norm now, feel actors and producers of shows. When Giaa aka Gopi bahu decided to leave Saath Nibhana... to take part in a dance reality show, there were rumours that the show might go off air. Initially the TRPs dropped but now it's been a year that the show has retained the same position (TRP:3-4).

Producer Rajan Shahi ( Kuch Toh Log Kahenge) admits it was a tough decision to replace Mohnish Behl. "But Sharad added his own style and personality to the show and over a period of time, we saw a rise in TRPs. The show's ratings have risen to 1.4 TVR in the 11 pm slot." He feels that replacements now add a certain freshness to the show and character.

Pintoo Guha, producer of Uttaran, agrees and says that replacements are now working in the favour of tele-serials. "It is circumstances that lead to replacements," Guha says. The key, says Shahi, is to find the right replacement. "A lot of time, energy and money is invested in creating a particular character," he says. The new actors do however go through constant comparison, at least for a short while which make the role more challenging.

Replacements that have sustained TRPs
Toral Rasputra replaced Pratyusha Banerjee in Balika Vadhu
Devoleena Bhattacharjee replaced Giaa Manek in Saath Nibhana Saathiya
Sharad Kelkar replaced Mohnish Behl in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge
Vikas Bhalla replaced Nandish Sandhu in Uttaran
Hiten Tejwani replaced Sushant Singh Rajput in Pavitra Rishta

Toral's view was diplomatic. But the article and producer are odd. The TRPs are NOT OUT YET so how can the article conclude that new Anandi has been accepted?

Replacements may or may not work in favour. But I agree that if story is strong and especially in shows which do not rely on a face or jodis, replacements do end up working after initial drop as audience gets familiar with the new face (and they are already used to the serial).

They should wait before declaring the judgement!

The producer sounded pretty haughty (or is he so confident about the show? Maybe because they've seen BV pick up after every low, like Avika's exit...).

(No comparisons intended and no insult intended to actor but I hate replacements and I think actor should also be loyal to the show and his/her viewers. Pratiggya 2 is being launched and look at Pooja Gor! She's been there in the first season throughout, with no breaks or fuss and is all set for season 2 also. Great dedication! In fact, even idea of seasons is kind of good. Maybe BV and other serials should also adopt this system and actors could get some respite from gruelling schedules while viewers won't have to tolerate breaks.)

Umm how about the replacements that didn't work? What a biased article. Again channel/PH trying to push down the replacement onto viewers who don't like her.

Gautami Kapoor for Tulsi

Tulsi's husband's replacement did not work

The two replacements for Kkusum were terrible, it ran the show down into oblivion, butchering every single beloved character, esp the lead protagonist

The first replacement for Riddhima in DMG

Mishal's replacement in Color's once very popular show Laagi Tujhse Lagan

Hell like they said, SP couldn't even replace Barun

And honestly I wouldn't call Sharad Kelkar a successful replacement in terms of TRPs bc the show only rated around 1.4-ish around the wedding and then the hooplah died down back to the ratings it had with Mohnish (when he was about to leave) after that...honestly the writing was to be blamed for that, even Mohnish would agree since that was something he always had an issue with.

Oh let's not forget Rajeev Khandelwal's plastic model with no expressions replacement in Kahin Toh Hoga. Totally ruined the charm of that show.

I am forgetting so many other unpopular, unsuccessful replacements...but these were def the memorable ones. For every successful replacement, there are many stories of unsuccessful replacements.

Character is king, my rear end. It's more like a balance, one can't be justified without the other. Good writing and talented performers go hand in hand to create an iconic character.

The funniest argument I have ever read - "There is fear trps will drop but people have accepted Toral" LOLOL - Mr writer trps are the only way to judge people have accpted or not 😆

How come u know ppl have accepted??Did u bribe the TVR people to know the trps! They are officially not out YET!

Senseless article without any statistical data or proofs.Indian media is crossing all limits of posting pointless stuff.

The article said about both Replacement which didn't work and replacement which worked The article mentioned the shows which got called off too There are more sayings always that replacements don't work The article mentioned some broke this wall and replacements worked so i dont think this from any angle is biased article It came from one most trust able sources for news The writer also given best example recently SNS whose TRP's with replacement initially fell down but later it stood up again

BV needs to develop some good tracks and a lot of hard work from Toral is required

The propaganda continues!

Waise...one thing I liked in the article:
"The key, says Shahi, is to find the right replacement."

BV PH have failed miserably here! 😆
