1. Saath Phere - epic FAIL;
2. Kahin to Hoga - made no sense post Rajeev ki Exit;
3. Kasauti Zindagi ki - forget the leaps, i still can't figure out who was Prerna's pyaar?;
4. Jyoti - there was no need to destroy the characterization of pankaj;
5. Kaisa Yeh Pyaar after a point was unbearable;
6. Currently Chaal Sheh Aur Maat;
7. Sasural Simar ka - I cannot even figure out the theme of the show or how its surviving;
8. Punar Vivah - a hero in love with dead wife and a heroine lying about her marital status...these r the role models we are to follow;
9. KTLK - they killed murdered butchered one of classiest mature love stories of the PAK diaspora - Dhoop Kinarey
10. Kya Hua Tera Vaada - filled with regressive thoughts in modern attire
11. Pavitra Rishta - where the male lead abandons his wife for 20 yrs and a mother who does not even fight him for custody of her children😲

Very well written Anjana ... BTW .. I'm Usha !

OMG ... reading your list of serials that derailed in between, I feel even more hopeless about the Indian TV scenario !!

PS: I think another serial that should be in your list is "Na bole tum" ... I used to watch it earlier ... but now its seems to be meandering without direction ...

hmmnnn... saans was nice ela but i again felt that manisha was almost villianised by the end as a semi hysterical crazy and manipulative woman. Also in the end with trp pressures, she takes the husband back leaving behind the nice, unassuming masterji - but still it was shown with far more complexity.Here i liked dard more - aserial bold enough to show an independent , attractive women fall first for a man far older and then for a younger man - and they showed the problems and complexities with the plot rather well. However predictably it was never as popular as saans for a husband's adultery is still far more acceptable and relatable in our society rather than a woman and a wife having a complex sexuality.

@rusha , thanx so much for the appreciation , its always a pleasure to encounter likemindedness on issues 😊

@ anjana. i'm so glad you brought about the problem with men in these k serials - most of them are just foils credulously watching women scheming, plotting, hatching and fooling them ...and many behave like male MCPs ...they simply are no well etched out characters...

before i sleep, our reminiscences yesterday made me also wonder where had all the generation of these old actors vanished with k serials too...such as shefali chayya, iravati harshe, renuka shahane , neena gupta and many others ...also men like tiku talsania, harsh chaya, sachin khedekar ...that whole generation also got wiped out !!

and rusha ...kathasagar and darpan were a class apart ...rishtey was another one on feel good stories ... vyomkesh bakshi and some of these dectective ones with female leads like khoj...and the romances like farmaan,...and those rk laxman issue types like rajni...then malgudi dayss...sighh...

i think lavy was perfectly right when she said that the need to keep these soaps running is what kills the narrative with bizarre , cliche twists ...besides ofcourse ekta brands ...trps and need for commercial successes led to unbelievable stretching of all and the death of a good story...

Usha - yes.. NBT's brutal killing of Mohan Bhatnagar disturbed me as well. I cannot get myself to continue watching it. I don't care if they Salsa ya feed each other sandwiches. The essence of Mohan is now populated and their rishta is a joke on par with the fraud Jugya perpetrated on BV. They could have redeemed Mohan after his marriage to Ridhimma if they had had him remain honest. Instead they made him a LYING CHEATER.

I hope BV Creatives don't lose their path after AnSh ki love - marriage track...and similarly destroy Shiv's character graph on the alter of continuing the show.

Modern PAK serials in many ways are even more regressive then Indian Serials... at least some of the new ones I have caught. But, they beat the Indian ones in scripting...as they are content to be finite...not intent on stretching to infinity.

When conceptually strong serials with immensely talented casts and potential falter, the amateur writer and ardent viewer in me cannot help, but CRINGE. Whether its Naa Anaa Iss Desh Ladoo, which started out so strong or NBT with its once fresh characterizations and promise of progressive content.

I miss Mohan the impatient honest passionate generous being that he once was.

Didn't warch Saans in the end. My liking is also for Hasratein and Humlog. Actually I m not a very regular viewer of serials. As for as today's serials are concerned ,I watch then for few days then move on. Too much Sazish . I cant relate to them. Completely illogical. Don't know anything abt serial Dard.

What a wonderful discussion this has turned out to be...from AnSh and BV, to reminiscing about old serials

I was quite young in the '90s when all these excellent shows used to run, so I have seen only a few of them. Hasratein, Sailaab Saans, Palchin, Tanha! When one thinks of these shows and then of the current scenario of the television industry, one can only pity the situation we have landed in! Every passing year, our shows are becoming more and more regressive.

In many ways Ekta kapoor has been the downfall of our entertainment industry..she is the one who started the landslide and the others just blindly followed her lead. I have also been a viewer (sometimes even an avid viewer, I must confess) of Ekta's shows...but they are always based on characters rather than actual stories...the charishma of an actor or the popularity of a character is what drives & runs BT shows. Starting with Kyunki, Kahani and Kasautii...every new show was just a repackaging of these 3 and a very poor one at that. At least Tulsi, Parvati & Prerna were never shown to tolerate abuse the way these days heroines are shown!!! These 3 shows were landmark since we never had a concept of daily shows prior to these...coming to think of it, we were much better off when there were only weekly shows. The charm and mystique of the stories remained intact and scriptwriters were not forced to manufacture inane twists and turns to keep the show running.

Hasratein was an absolute delight to see..the nuances of various relationships scripted and executed brilliantly...Harsh Chaya, Shefali Chaya, Mrinal Kulkarni...even Rajiv Verma & Anju Mahendroo...each were fabulous in their own way. BTW, that show was based on a Marathi novel called Adhantari which means wthout any support. The end of the book is slightly different than the show though!

Tanha...it was sooo different from the usual Indian shows at that time! Subtlety has never been a forte of Indian much and Tanha demonstrated that very well...all the characters were so subtle...so understated

And how can I not mention Hasina Moin's Dhoop Kinarey!!!!!!!!! I fall short of words and adjectives when I start talking abt this wonderful wonderful show. The script, the characterization, the direction…there is nothing more to desire after one ses this show! Dr Ahmer, Zoya, Irfan, Anji, baba, even Fazi…every one is so real, believable and immediately become part of your life. Rahat Kazmi's portrayal of Ahmer still makes me yearn to have such a guy in my life…who is far from perfect, but is endearing in his flawed state as well! In the scenes where Zoya's baba is in the hospital…they way he takes care of Zoya makes me go all 'Awww' I have lost track of how many times I have seen that show. Everytime I am at a loss of what to do, I just put those DVDs on!!

And now when I see KTLK..the less said abt that show better…I just lose my cool on seeing the way they have butchered my all time fav story. I am sure even Hasina Moin must be repenting giving them the rights to remake it😡

Kuch Toh Log Kahenge on Sony... its adaption of Dhoop Kinarey, which is an epic PAK drama... btwn a bubbly neophyte doctor, Zoya and a Sauve but seriously Sanki Senior Dr. Ahmer. Their profession brings them together...the fact he's the "adopted" son of her grandfather tears them apart...tlhen there's their umar ki fasle and his bff (Imagine combo pak of Ashi & Gauri)

seems like an interesting premise. They would have anyways killed it.

Anyone remember a serial in Zee a long time back which showcased romance between a pakistani guy and a desi hindu girl? Smita Bansal was the Indian girl and the hottie Aamir Bhashir as the pakistani guy. I do not remember the name, but I really liked it. It appealed to the young 20 yr old in me then.
