New entrant and a leap in Balika Vadhu
Buzz up!

Speculations were rife about Balika Vadhu taking a leap for quite sometime and now it's official. The show will take a leap of five years and the popular characters of Anandi and Jagdish will grow older. Child actors Avika Gor and Avinash Mukherjee, who play the coveted roles of Anandi and Jagdish will make way for two new faces, who will play the two characters post the leap.

The hunt for the same is on. Along with this, a new character named Suman will enter in the show, which will be played by actress Priya Ahuja. She is currently seen in Sony SAB's Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasma.

Our source informs, "We are introducing a new character named Suman, who will eventually help Shyam and Sugna reconcile their differences and start afresh. Suman will also be romantically involved with Shyam. She is an educated and independent girl, whose father is dead and mother is handicapped. She solely looks after her family. Ahuja's entry is planned to boost the TRPs and her track will evolve depending upon the feedback of the viewers."

When contacted, Ahuja refused to comment and directed us to speak to the production house. We also sent a text message to producer Sunjoy Wadhva but he remained unavailable.

Ahuja's entry is expected to air sometime next week.

Goodbye, Anandi!

It's official now. The most popular child artiste on TV, Avika Gor, who plays Anandi, will not be seen in Balika Vadhu anymore. Ironically, earlier, when Avika wanted to quit the show because her studies were being neglected, the channel forced her to stay. Now the same channel has asked her to leave.

Balika Vadhu is slated for a leap. A source from the channel said, "There is no point in having Avika now. She might be called for a couple of days, to shoot some flashback scenes, after the leap will fast-forward to the time when Anandi is an adult. We will have a new person playing Anandi."

Newcomer Pratyusha Banerjee from Jamshedpur has been chosen to play the grown-up Anandi. "The channel held auditions and Pratyusha was selected," adds the source.

The official spokesperson of the channel confirmed the story. Let's hope Avika can focus on her studies now.

5-year leap for Balika Vadhu

Balika Vadhu will no longer be a balika (child). The popular daily soap Balika Vadhu is about to undergo a 'see' change. In the middle of July, Avika Gor the popular child artiste who has been playing the eponymous part for over two years now will exit the serial.

Yes, Balika Vadhu is undergoing a generation leap. In mid-July the child-bride Avika Gor will grow up by 5 years. The girl chosen to replace Avika Gor is Pratyusha Banerjee from Jamshedpur who has never been on screen before. Sources from the channel Colors say Pratyusha was chosen for her lack of experience.

"We wanted a completely new face. The reason why Sakshi Tanwar's character didn't work in Balika Vadhu is because she already had a very strong image," says the channel source. Adds Rajesh Kamat, the CEO, Colors, "Balika Vadhu is our flagship show that focused on an innocent child bride Anandi and how early marriage impacts her life. The show marked the beginning of meaningful entertainment on Indian television. Now, as a logical extension to the storyline the show will be taking a five-year leap to portray the problems faced by child brides as they grow into their roles from being just playmates to their husbands to taking on the responsibility of a marriage. The leap is expected to be incorporated into the show mid-July."

Alright! Balika Vadhu will take a five-year-leap but before that the show will witness a new track wherein the focus will shift to Shyam (Vikrant Massey) and Sugna (Vibha Anand). A new character Suman will be introduced Monday onwards.

A soruce says, "The leap will only happen in mid-July. Before that the track will shift to Syam, who'll be migrating to the city for work. Here he will befriend a new girl, Suman, who will fall in love with him. There's likely to be a relationship between the two. Suman is played by actress Priya Ahuja, who is seen on 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chahsmah'."

When contacted, Ahuja confirmed the news, "Yes, I'm stepping into Balika Vadhu as Suman. She's a very quiet person who stays with her mom in Jaipur, Shyam and Suman meet accidentally and thereafter become good friends. That's all I know now. I've just shot for one episode so far."

The new track goes on air on Monday.

Balika Vadhu

Kaun Banega Crorepati 4 is still a few months away, but the big question on everyone's mind now is 'kaun banegi Anandi?

Colors have put the onus on the viewers to decide their next Anandi. The channel has shortlisted three girls to replace Avika Gor, who bids adieu to the show in July. The three chosen girls are, Pratyusha Banerjee from Jamshedpur, Nivedita Tiwari of Lucknow, and Mumbai's Ketaki Chitale.

Perhaps, this is for the first time that any SMS voting is being conducted to choose a protagonist for a show. Usually, SMS voting is restricted to non-fiction only. The voting begun after the channel aired a visual featuring these girls. Colors will adopt the same process to choose the new Jagdish.

The last couple of months has seen Colors lose ground, and the number one slot to Star Plus. Star Plus and Rajan Shahi's new show Chaand Chhupa Baadal Mein that will compete with Balika Vadhu will commence today. A pick-your-Anandi is certainly a good marketing strategy. Will the viewers bite it? May be, may be not! This will be reflected in the next TAM ratings.

The Heavyweights Of TV

Some months back, Gary Kirsten, coach of the Indian cricket team, had reportedly slammed his players for their poor show in the T20 World Cup. Kirsten is said to have held the poor fitness of his players responsible for their downfall in the tournament. He's listed three players who were overweight and simply not fit for any sport. Upset by the coach's findings, the Indian cricket board warned all it's 'heavyweight' players to toe the fitness line. Certain players were sent a show-cause notice for an alleged bar brawl. One of them happened to be the out of form and woefully out of shape, Yuvraj Singh, who was then dropped for the next couple of tours.

Just like Yuvraj, our TV industry too is filled with heavyweights who can't carry a show on their unfit shoulders and have become an eye sore for the viewers. Someone should also send a show-cause to these heavyweights too. Let's see who they are.

Ram Kapoor

'Kasamh Se', it's high time Ram Kapoor takes to the treadmill. Actually, Kapoor needs more than that. He's long been the butt of jokes, but Kapoor's potato-like frame is no longer amusing. In fact, the same people are now worried for his health too. Ram has been gaining weight for a long time. His newly unemployed status has got nothing to do with this gain of weight. Kapoor has been sporting his flab since the days of 'Kasamh Se'.

The show's TRPs dwindled but there was any drop in Kapoor's growing frame. Soon Prachi Desai, his young wife from 'Kasamh Se' started having reservations about standing next to him. The viewers mocked this pairing saying that Kapoor looked like Prachi's grandfather. The girl made a timely escape with producer Ekta Kapoor – another flabby Kapoor - granting her Bollywood wish. The much married Gurdeep Kohli replaced Prachi, but Ram continued with his weight gaining spree. Eventually, Ekta couldn't handle the burden of an overweight actor or his pricey demands. So, she deemed it better to shut the show.

Ram returned to small screen playing brother and host, first to Rakhi Sawant and then Rahul Mahajan in their respective swayamvars. Here he was exposed to beautiful women and savoured the lovely delicacies that come with such occasions. The actor needn't be served with a show-cause notice, but it's high time he altered his lifestyle for his own good

Smriti Iraani

She used to work in McDonald's before. Today Smriti Iraani looks like a burger herself. Motherhood is always fattening, but when you're the highest paid actress in TV's history, you surely can afford the best of weight-controlling measures or treatment. Smriti, though was least interested. While she kept gaining every pound of flesh, her career saw one loss after another. Political pressures too took a toll on her body. In 2009, Smriti returned to the small screen as Maniben. The show was doomed even before it started. After all, why would anyone like to see a show whose leading lady looks like a ball. Smriti didn't help her cause with her inane expressions and loaded make-up. 'Maniben' was a disaster waiting to happen. Perhaps, a final nail in the coffin. With her career all but over, it's time to settle down in politics. However, will the country like to leave its future in the hands of an unfit and obese lady?

Sakshi Tanwar

Our Parvati from 'Kahani Ghar Ghar ki' is not obese, but she sure has put on a few extra kilos. Strangely, Sakshi Tanwar is still a spinster and we've never heard of her having any liaisons. The question that begs an answer is how has she put on weight?

Tanwar was recently seen in 'Balika Vadhu', where she gave the impression of an actor who's well past her sell-by date. Viewers didn't appreciate Sakshi as Teepri. Many didn't even hesitate in blaming Teepri for the show's below average performance in the last month or so. It's difficult to see Tanwar returning in a lead role again. Shedding a few kilos may not turn back the years, but at least Tanwar would look presentable in front of the camera.

Juhi Parmar

Alright, Juhi Parmar was never a bony lady. As surprisingly, she was crowned Miss Rajasthan in 1999. Perhaps, that speaks 'volumes' for the contest and other competitors. As long as one has seen her in Indian television, Juhi has always looked like a buxom babe. 'Kumkum' wound up after seven long years. Juhi then returned with the SAB show 'Yeh Chanda Kanoon Hai'. During the show's press conference, Juhi was asked whether she was looking fat. The actress agreed that she needed to lose lots of weight. However, we're yet to see her word translate into action. Now that she's married with a possible motherhood shortly, Any possibilityof seeing Juhi in slender shape can be safely ruled out.

VIP

Laughter is the best medicine, but an overdose of it can lead to side effects. Perhaps, one of them is weight gaining. Mimic, comedian Vijay Ishwarlal Pawar's bank balance has improved from Rs.0 to lakhs and perhaps even to a crore. What has also grown is his waistline. Success tastes sweet, and VIP seems to be savoring every bit of it. Worse, he doesn't shy away from showing his ridiculous belly. Mr.VIP get your act right, before the joke turns on you.

Devan Bhojani

Ideally we' simply love to see Deven Bhojani the way is he. Asking him to shed oodles of weight would be a sin. Apart from his acting, Bhojani is famous for his chubby look. So dear boy, shed some flab in the belly, but we don't want you to lose the baby fat of your face. 'Baa, Bahoo Aur Baby' may be over, but long live Gattu.

Neha Marda

She still in her 20s, but Neha Marda, a.k.a Gehna of 'Balika Vadhu' fame, is starting to look at least five years older. All right, the diminutive girl was told to put on weight, as she is supposed to deliver a baby in the show. Now that the baby is out, it's time for to get back into shape. The belly looks fine but Neha needs to lose weight below the waist, especially from her meaty thighs.

Saroj Khan

No work, it's time to play. However, Saroj Khan is often found seated in the judge's chair. Staying benched for long periods invariably leads to obesity. She'd said at a 'Chak Dhoom Dhoom' press conference that it was time for her to lose weight or else die. However, Khan continues to warm the bench. Madame, you've had your turn. It's time to vacate the chair for others. You need to resort to vigorous dancing yourself. God forbid, if you were to pass away, there won't be any moaning.

Pratyusha Banerjee

'Balika Vadhu' is currently gaining more attention for its off-screen activities. Colors have passed the 'Who-is-the-next-Anandi' baton to the viewers who are SMSing in huge numbers to pick their Anandi from the three short-listed girls – A. Pratyusha Banerjee, B. Nivedita Tiwari, C. Ketaki Chitale.

While the channel hasn't set any timeframe for viewers to SMS their choice, news has it that Jamshedpur's Pratyusha Banerjee has been finalized to play the new Anandi in 'Balika Vadhu'.

A little birdie from the sets informs, "Though 'Balika Vadhu' actors and unit members have a liking for Lucknow's Nivedita Tiwari, it's Jamshedpur's Pratyusha Banerjee who is said to be finalized as new Anandi. The channel is expected to make an announcement on this in a few days. However, there's no word on who will play the role of Jagdish. Perhaps, the channel has already lined up a replacement or they might ask the viewers to choose."

We called a few actors but they simply refused to comment. Producer Sunjoy Waddhwa didn't revert to our text message.

Shyam and Sugna

Television doesn't follow logic, and some producers/shows simply love to defy it. However, we're not talking of Ekta Kapoor and her K-soaps here. The one that has caught our imagination is Sugna of 'Balika Vadhu' fame.

The current track sees Sugna suffering a miscarriage after she falls from the staircase. In the preceding episodes, Sugna lost the trust of her husband Shyam (Vikrant Massey) and her in-laws after she secretly attended the havan of her deceased husband, Pratap. Sugna was literally thrown out by her in-laws, but was pardoned after Madan Singh adhered to her father Bhairav's plea. However, the family won't show any mercy to Sugna this time as she's been set free by her husband Shyam.

While we empathize with the girl, Sugna seems to making it a habit of going through rough periods while pregnant. Earlier, it was Shyam's uncle Ramcharan who was adamant on killing the off-spring of Sugna's ex-husband but failed to do so. What goes around; comes around. The same Ramcharan is beating his head after losing their legitimate heir. That begs the question, is Sugna's womb cursed?

"No, I don't buy that. If that was the case then, she wouldn't have delivered Pratap's child in the first place," chided Vibha Anand, who plays the unfortunate character.

If one turns back the clock, an under-age Sugna demanded to be married to Pratap because she was carrying his illegitimate child. Tragedy struck when Pratap was killed by dacoits on the day of his marriage. Shyam came into Sugna's life and eventually accepted her. The child was born in the month of January 2010, and it's July now. By that count, Sugna's son should be six-month old.

What intrigues us is that in one of the recent episodes, Shyam reveals that he's married for seven months while his step-son is four months old. Strangely, after going through a tumultuous first experience, Sugna is pregnant again in a matter of seven months.

An equally puzzled Anand says, "Hmm, Sugana is a village bumpkin. Gaon main askar bacche jaldi paida hote hain (Girls become mother at an early age in villages). Actually, in the preceding months, Sugna's father does express concern at her daughter being pregnant few months after her first delivery. Look, I don't have answer this question. Perhaps, the writers will be the best persons to give an explanation on this."

Well, we don't think the writers themselves will have an answer to this. After all, anything can happen in tele-operas.
