When you think of a nurse, what do you think of? The traditional white nurses uniform with the red cross on it? (They don't dress that way anymore, in fact, we're not certain they ever did) What about the man or woman wearing the scrubs running around the hospital taking your vitals? There are other nurses that aren't often considered, and Vet Nurse Day reminds us to take some time to remember and honor those men and women who work at our veterinarian's office every day to take care of those precious furred, feathered, and scaled members of our families.

History of Vet Nurse Day

Veterinary Nurse Day was established to raise awareness of those men and women who work alongside the veterinarians every day to help heal, comfort, and protect our pets. Whether they're working in the field on large animals like horses and cattle, or carefully handling the smallest of pets like mice or lizards, they're a vitally important part of the care our pets receive. So what exactly does a veterinary nurse do?
Veterinary nurses are your first contact in the office when it comes time for care, they speak to you about what issues are facing your pets, and help to prepare them for treatment, keeping them calm and comfortable.

When your pet has to stay at the facility, the Vet Nurse is the one who makes sure their bandages are changed, they're fed and watered, and that they get a little time spent with love and attention so they aren't lonely during their stay. Even more importantly, they work with the vet during the operations to make sure that everything goes smoothly. In short, they're just as important to your pet's welfare and happiness during treatment as the vet themselves! That's why Vet Nurse Day was established to celebrate and thank these incredible members of your veterinary staff.

How to celebrate Vet Nurse Day

Vet Nurse Day is celebrated in an incredibly simple way, you just head out and thank you vet nurse(s) for everything they do to make sure your pet comes back to you happy, healthy, and well-taken care of. You can do this by sending a card or a basket to your local veterinarian's office, or heading on in and thanking them personally for all that they do. After all, imagine what our stays at hospitals would be like if we didn't have the nursing staff there to make things move smoothly!

The image of the spinning top is a powerful one, the image of an object only kept in place by motion and precarious laws of physics. They have been used as imagery in many things, including the idea that things must be held in a careful balance, and an indication that eventually all things wind down in the fullness of time. Most recently the spinning top has been used in Inception, creating a powerful connection between this rotating form and illusory stability. International Top Spinning Day celebrates these ideas and many more!

History of International Top Spinning Day

International Top Spinning Day was established by the Spinning Top & Yo-Yo Museum of Burlington, Wisconsin, both to spread awareness of the joy that is the spinning top, and the fact that the World itself is, in essence, a spinning top, complete with the characteristic wobble. Tops have a long and august history in the world, and have appeared in every culture with significance ranging from spiritual to a simple childhood toy. Just how old is the spinning top? It has been recognized as one of the oldest recognizable toys by archaeologists, being found in multiple cultures and even deep in the oldest sites.

There are multiple types of tops, and the principles that govern them are even used in some of our most advanced technologies (ever heard of a gyroscope? It's function is based on the same principles that govern the behavior of a top). There are battling tops and gambling tops, and some of those gambling tops are even used for religious purposes. Take, for example, the Dreidel of Jewish faith, a top used for gambling and, by tradition, to hide the fact that they were studying the Torah during times of persecution. Tops really do have a remarkable history, and International Top Spinning Day is your opportunity to research them all! Or just play with a top.

How to celebrate International Top Spinning Day

First, find yourself a top. Tops can be found at almost any toy store, and it's not terribly difficult to make one of your very own. Ever spun a penny on a table top? You're essentially creating a top and using the same forces that govern them to keep that penny spinning! Feeling like getting involved? If you're a teacher you can host an International Top Spinning Day at your school, or suggest it if you're a student!

Toupee's, Wigs, long hair in the front and bald on top, the issue of the balding head has been creating all sorts of solutions' for generations. But why does there need to be a solution? Why can there not be a Bald And Free Day to celebrate the chrome-dome, the cue-ball, the beautifully shaved scalp revealed in all its glory? Take heart! For such a day does truly exist, and it is, appropriately enough, Bald And Free Day, and it's a day to toss aside all your head coverings and let the scalp breathe!

History of Be Bald And Free Day

Be Bald And Free Day is a celebration of the bald pate and the strength of the men and women who have dared to bare it all. Don't think that being bald has always been a sign of weakness, after all when was the last time you thought of Bruce Willis or Sean Connery as weak'. Instead these men are bald and yet symbols of virility. They're part of a grand history as well, including such notable bald men as Mahatma Ghandi, the man who help to kick the British out of India without resorting to any form of violence.

How about Mikhail Gorbachev? The Russian leader who helped bring down the Berlin Wall, the Soviet Union, and put an end to the cold war. You better believe he rocked his bald pate to help change the world at large, in part by criticizing another man of equally hairless scalp, Vladimir Putin. Then there's theman who arguably changed all of science with the concept of evolution, Charles Darwin. Correct, another man that utterly changed the world while baring his scalp to the world.

But baldness isn't a powerful thing simply for women, take a look at Sinead O'Connor and Britney Spears, a pair that some would consider it blasphemous to speak in the same breath. Sinead wore her hair as a rebellion against those who wanted her to take on a softer, more sexualized look to help further her career. Instead she went bald and severe to break the male fantasy of the music industry. Britney, in her greatest time of trial and tribulation, shaved her head in part as a way to reclaim herself from the musical machine. Powerful women indeed!
