To slay means to murder. It's wrong on multiple levels. Moreover, the wounds had ceased causing him pain and when he finally decided to let go of his life, all wounds vanished and the soul found release by piercing his mukut.

In that case he cheated with his army.

Having Iccha Mrityu, he could have got all the arrows removed from his body and would have recovered in some time to probably rejoin the battlefield

I guess we shall all jointly write a book on our understanding of Mahabharata. It will break many myths

Nope. He had accomplished his deed. The war had become stagnant in his presence with no major progress. So, he decided to withdraw for the greater good.

Shikhandi hadn't taken an oath to kill Bheeshm but to be the cause of his death

I believe Amba reincarnation story along with Bheeshma telling Pandavas to fight with Shikhandi in front of them was added later to give Bheeshma a respectable farewell

When Shikhandi was leaving the war after Bheeshma cut his bow, Yudhishtira held him and reminded him of his vow

The high-souled Ajatasatru, angrily addressing Sikhandin in that battle, said these words, 'Thou saidst at that time, in the presence of thy sire, unto me--Even I shall slay Bhishma of high vows with my shafts of the hue of the effulgent sun. Truly do I say this.--Even this was thy oath

Apparently, Shikhandi vowed in front of Yudhishtira and Drupad that he will kill Bheeshma

I think they picked up this oath and turned it into a story of past life and reincarnation

That's what I am saying too, read my previous comments, either he got hit by Shikhandi or Arjun didn't want to hit him plain blank death but wanted to present it as a hit because he was is not a position to attack properly.

Hence this entire Shikhandi story was added

Desist, therefore, O Bhargava! That foremost of the Pandavas, Arjuna, the mighty son of Indra, hath been ordained by the Self-create to be the slayer of Bhishma!'

^ Parashurama's ancestors said this to him.

Shikhandi was a forced insertion against destiny. No wonder he was largely ineffective.

Shikhandi is just a face saving for Bheeshm

But HearMeRoar could also be right, his arrows might have accidentally hit Bheeshm

There's no face saving when the vivid descriptions of the battle clearly accredit Arjuna.
