Part 2
The drive back to the ETF office was just as silent as before, but this time, the air was heavier—laden with unsaid words and suppressed emotions. Arjun kept his eyes on the road, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. Riya, on the other hand, sat stiffly, her gaze fixed outside, as if the world beyond the window held more answers than the man sitting beside her ever would.
She had expected him to say something. She had hoped that maybe—just maybe—Arjun Rawte would finally break his walls and let her in. But, as always, he remained the enigma that tormented her heart.
"Yeh dooriyan sirf dukh degi, Arjun..." she thought bitterly.
***
As soon as they reached, Riya didn’t wait. She stepped out of the SUV, shutting the door behind her with more force than necessary, and walked straight toward her desk. Arjun watched her go, an unfamiliar pain twisting in his chest.
"Itna gussa… itni narazgi… kya maine sach mein iske saath nainsaafi ki hai?" he questioned himself.
"Aaj kal yeh dono theek se baat bhi nahi kar rahe," Chotu muttered to Shree, watching the tension unfold.
Shree sighed. "Haan, pehle toh sirf chhup-chhup ke ek dusre ko dekhte the, ab ek dusre se bhaag rahe hain."
Before they could discuss further, Sameer Rathore entered, his authoritative presence demanding attention. "Team, update do. Kya pata chala Meera ke case mein?"
Riya, pushing aside her emotional turmoil, opened the file. "Meera ke parents ke kehna hai ki unka kisi se koi dushmani nahi thi. Lekin CCTV footage mein jo aadmi dekha gaya tha, uska face clear nahi hai."
"Kya ladki ke phone records se kuch mila?" Arjun asked, his voice neutral.
Shree nodded and quickly typed on his laptop. "Haan, Sir. Meera ke phone records mein ek unknown number baar-baar dikh raha hai. Last call bhi ussi number se aaya tha."
"Number trace karo," Rathore ordered.
Arjun and Riya exchanged a quick glance before looking away. Even in work, their synergy was undeniable. But the distance between them was growing.
And it was breaking both of them.
***
Later that evening, while waiting for updates, Riya found herself alone in the ETF tech lab. The dim glow of the computer screen cast shadows on her face as she tried to distract herself with work.
But the pain inside her was relentless.
Arjun entered the room quietly. His sharp eyes observed her from afar—the way her fingers hesitated on the keyboard, the way she blinked rapidly as if holding back tears. He knew her too well.
"Agar tumse doori bana raha hoon, toh sirf tumhe bachaane ke liye, Riya..." he thought to himself.
Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke. "Tum mujhse naraaz ho."
Riya froze but didn’t turn around. "Mujhe farq nahi padta, Sir," she said, the title Sir cutting through him like a knife.
He stepped closer. "Jhoot mat bolo, Riya."
This time, she spun around, her eyes flashing with anger. "Sach sunna chahte ho, Arjun? Theek hai. Haan, main naraaz hoon. Haan, mujhe farq padta hai! Kyunki ek din tum mujhse baat karte ho, aur agle din aise behave karte ho jaise main tumhari zindagi mein hoon hi nahi!"
Arjun clenched his jaw, his fists tightening. "Mujhe bas thoda waqt chahiye."
"Kis baat ka waqt, Arjun?" she demanded, stepping closer. "Mujhe samajhne ka? Ya phir mujhse aur door jaane ka?"
He looked away. He couldn’t answer.
Riya let out a bitter laugh. "Tum kabhi apni feelings accept nahi karoge, na? Hamesha apni dukh bhari kahani ke parde ke peeche chhupte rahoge."
Arjun’s eyes snapped back to hers, fire burning within them. "Riya, yeh baat itni simple nahi hai."
"Simple toh kabhi tha hi nahi. Lekin tumne use aur complicated bana diya."
There it was. The painful truth laid bare between them.
Before he could respond, her phone buzzed with an update from Shree. She quickly checked it and exhaled deeply. "Unknown number trace ho gaya hai. Chalna hai ya aur door bhaagna hai?"
Arjun didn’t reply. Instead, he simply nodded, following her out.
But something inside him knew—this was just the beginning of their separation.
