Chapter 4:

Riya was having hard time controlling her emotions. Her inside was getting teared apart. Suddenly she felt a touch soft as feather in her shoulder. She turned and saw Rudra sitting just behind her along with Yohaan. Rudra again patted her shoulder as if to assure her. His eyes were burning like coal. Riya took deep breath and steadied herself. She will have win the case at any cost. After few more lies Ahuja sat happily. When the judge asked Riya she got up. She went plastered her poker face and faced the woman who was once her mother in law.

Riya: Mrs. Rawte aapne aabtak jo kuch bhi kaha, aapne akhose dekhi hui hai saab?

Mrs. Rawte: Haan. Sare ghatnay hamare akho ke samne hua hai.

Riya: So, according to you I am characterless. I never respected my marriage. Right?

Mrs. Rawte frowned. She was not sure what is Riya trying to do.

Mrs. Rawte: Haan.

Riya: Phir aap mere baccho ke peeche kiyu padi hai? I mean you literary hinted that I was having extra marital affairs. Then why Mrs. Rawte?

Mrs. Rawte faltered. She wasn't prepared for this angle. But she recovered quickly.

Mrs. Rawte: Haame pata hai. Ki woh dono hamare bacche hi hai.

Riya: Yeh mere sawalo ka jawab nehi hua Mrs. Rawte.

Mrs. Rawte tried to form some ideas but failed. After few efforts Riya smiled and bowed gesturing that her questioning is finished.

Then Mr. Ahuja called Arjun in the witness box. He too took the oath and steadied himself for the questioning.

Mr. Ahuja: Mr. Rawte. Miss Bose se aap pehli baar kaab mile?

Arjun: She was send by Com. Sir to work as our lawyer.

Mr. Ahuja: To kaisi thi woh? I mean characterization?

Arjun was looking at everywhere but her. At the question his face went a shade paler but he steadied himself.

Arjun: Pehle to mujhe laga ki woh acchi hi hai. Mera thoda bohot khyal bhi rakhti thi. Par aab sochta hoom to lagta hai ki woh sab.. Kaam ke beej beej mein kahi baar bahar bhi jati thi. Puchne pe sedha kuch jawab deti bhi nehi thi. Cases pe kabhi dhyan nehi lagati thi. Kucha ur hi khyalo mein dubi rehti thi hamesha.

Mr. Ahuja turned to the judge and spread his hands.

Mr. Ahuja: Note to be pointed your honor. Who knows? May be Riya used to go to meet her lover Mr. Awasti? May be they were having affair on going?

By then Riya was seeing red. How did she ever love this person? How did she fell for him? A light touch on her shoulder brought her back to senses and she realized that the judge has asked if she wants to question Arjun. She had so many question to ask. Like, did he ever loved her for once? If yes then why is he insulting her and their kids before the whole world? But she nodded no.

The judge declared day end and put another day for next proceedings of the case. Riya along with Yohan and Rudra came back home. Though Yohan didn't entered. He excused himself saying that something urgent came up and left. But Riya knew better. She had sense the sense of desperation in him. He was disturbed. She had never seen him like this except few years back.

Aliya had been premature baby. So, doctors told her to keep the baby under strict observation. Riya was struggling with her work. She already had Rudra to take care of. Rudra's school fees, house rent, Aliya's food, their own food... every tension was sitting on Riya's shoulder like a massive boulder. Aliya was one and half month when she caught pneumonia. She was in a critical state. Yohaan stood by her. He took turns of feeding Rudra, or taking him to school. Sometime he used to sit by Aliya and murmur sweet nothing into her little ear. That time she had seen him desperate. He had lost control when the doctors said that they cannot do anything more. The carefree Yohaan she used to know in collage days was long gone. Was she the reason behind his sudden transformation?

Her chain of thought broke at the sound of calling bell. After lunch she came up to terrace to clear her mind bit. And she get lost in her past. She heard Rudra opening the door and a male voice. She came down and found face to face with the Justice. She has worked under him as apprentice for years. The man was not only her mentor but also a father. And this is the very man who is being the Judge of her current case.

After passing the pleasantries he came to the main point.

Justice: What is this Riya? Why is Arjun doing all this? Where was he when you was struggling with both of your kids? Now all of a sudden his fatherly side surfaced?

Riya: I don't know Sir. But I guess his mother has to do something in this. Sir please help me.

Justice: Look Riya. Even you have handled such cases before. You know the ultimate decision. Riya, in such cases we consider the family. Arjun has a biggest point and that is Roshni. They still have no kids. They will use it against you Riya. No matter how strong proofs you collect, our society is still patriarchal. And I love you as my daughter but in the end I am bound to my laws and regulations.

Riya wanted to scream her heart out. Why everything was so unfair to her? Why her kids have to suffer this much? But she knew each and every words the Justice said is true.

Riya: But Sir what shall I do now? I can't lose my kids. Rudra hates Arjun. Aliya doesn't even know that Arjun is her father. Their world will crumble down.

Justice: Get married to someone who knows you more than you know yourself. Someone who will love your kids more than you do. Someone who will be your shadow now and always, through every thick and thin.

Riya nodded her head. She knew where Justice was going with it. But how can she do it?

Riya: Sir, I know what you are trying to say. But it is not possible. Yohaan is just my friend.

Justice: And to your kids? Who is Yohaan Awasti to your kids Riya?

Note- Heyllo everyone.. I know after so many sleepless nights (?) I finally updated. But it's a short one. The problem is I wanted to finish this chapter at a key point. And I found it here. This is not just this chapter's but the whole story's key point. Hope you will bear with me.

Finally an update🥳 I've been waiting for this one from so long . Thought I am an arakshi fan but this one Riya characterisation is just superb .
