Arjun slid his arms through the sleeves of the heavy sherwani his best friend - Sameer
Rathore - was holding up for him. Turning towards the mirror stiffly, he slowly buttoned it
up. Grey clouds rolled-in high in the sky, more or less mirroring his mood.
"Temperature seems to be dipping. It will at least be a pleasant day" Sameer muttered.
Arjun's eyes darted to the open window, the day dawned cloudy but the weather was
pleasant. The scent of rain and damp earth hung in the air. Once upon a time, he thought
days like these were beautiful, romantic even. Today, all he saw was his favourite city
cloaked in gloom.
His eyes darted back to the mirror. To describe his facial expression, would be like
describing a blank piece of paper. No emotion whatsoever.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Sameer asked, not trying to mask his disapproval. His
question halted Arjun in his track, turning around, he faced his friend with a frown.
"Isn't it a bit late to be asking me that question?"
"No. Not if you are marrying this girl for the wrong reasons"
Looking in his eyes, Arjun saw the disappointment and anger Sameer so carefully held
back. He thought Arjun had a choice in this, when in fact he didn't.
"Sam mein..."
"Arjun?!" The motherly voice of his aunt called out from the room entrance. Tears rolled in
her eyes as she took in her son in the wedding attire.
Walking forward, she cupped his face in her hands and kissed his forehead lovingly.
Happiness radiated off her in waves.
"Bahut acche lag rahe ho" She whispered wiping her tears.
At that point, Arjun looked at Sameer, silently hoping he understood the reason behind his
decision.
One month ago.
"Tumhe meri kasam hain Arjun! Meri baat maan jao!!"
Arjun stared in disbelief at the woman standing in front of him. Her eyes started to swell with
tears, the dark circles under her eyes became more prominent. Her face was pale with
worry. It does something to you when the woman who brought you up, is standing in front of
you crying her eyes out. Arjun took several steps forward towards his aunt, ready to plead
her take her words back.
"Sunaina yeh tum kya keh rahi ho?" Her husband asked, uncomfortable with the dramatic
turn of events.
"Sahi keh rahi hoon Milan. Paagal hogaya hain uss ladki ke liye. Aaj toh sabhi hadh paar
kardi..."
"Sunaina, calm down!" Milan said soothingly to his wife.
"Aaj isse m-meri baat maani padegi Milan, ya p-phir..." She trailed off.
He felt numb at his aunt's words. No longer able to see her crumbling down in his worry, he
turned away and walked into his room silently. He stood near the window, hands crossed
across his chest and eyes sweeping the city that was succumbing to the night's darkness.
Though it did not show on his face, battles raged in his mind. Voices from the past and
present echoed in his ears in union. The most dominant of the voices, belonged to the two
most important women in his life.
"Promise karo Arjun, no matter what happens we'll find a way to be together"
"Bewakoofi hain yeh Arjun! Beta, woh tumhari zindagi se jaa chuki hain"
"Bahut mushkil aayenge humare raaste, asaan nahi hoga"
"Mein yeh nahi keh rahi hoon ki asaan hoga, par tumhe aage badna hoga Beta!"
"Promise karo, tum hamesha mere saath rahoge!"
"Tumhe meri kasam hain Arjun! Meri baat maan jao!!"
Two women.
Two choices.
Choosing one will mean losing the other forever.
Yet, he had to choose.
He knew what his choice would be eventually, accepting it however wasn't easy. Tears
rolled in his eyes but he did not let them fall. Slowly turning around, he made his way out of
the room, and came to a halt outside another. His hand rose numbly and knocked on the
heavy wooden door twice before entering.
Inside, sitting on the bed were the elderly couple. His aunt and uncle, the only family he
has left. It tugged his heart to see her still crying. His eyes darted to his uncle, who
beckoned him forward towards them and patted the space next to him.
As he sat down, Arjun's eyes fixed on the woman's saddened ones.
"Aunty..."
More tears brimmed in her eyes as they darted to his heavily bandaged forehead. Arjun
took her hand into his and gently patted it before continuing,
"Aunty, aap please royi ye math. I am sorry for everything that happened..." He paused,
taking a deep breath, "Aap jo bhi..."
"Arjun! Beta..." Her fingers touched his cheeks gently before caressing his bandages.
"Please aunty, aap math royi ye! I'll forget all that happened, I'll forget her. I-I'll move on in
life...aap jisse kahe usse shaadi karoonga"
"Sach?!"
He simply nodded in reply.
"Arjun, tum jaante ho na...yeh sab mein tumhare bhalayi ke liye keh rahi hoon?" His aunt's
voice shook while she spoke, making him cringe in guilt.
He tried to smile at her, reassuring her of the fact that he knew. But he couldn't. Instead, he
lay his head in her lap and let her cradle him. He was immediately reminded of the night his
parent's car crashed - orphaning him in a blink of an eye.
That night, it was this same woman, who took him into her arms and held him and assured
him that he was not alone. It was a promise given to a fifteen year old boy that, she and her
husband would always look after him and be there for him whenever he needed them.
He promised her many years later that he'd be the son they never had and make them
proud and happy.
His aunt never went back on her promise. They have always been with Arjun, in his
happiness and sadness.
Now, he had to keep his promise.
