Chapter 3

Arjun felt his head heavy and raised his hand to catch his head. But he felt someone catch his hand and placing it at his side started kneading his head. Smiling at the touch he slowly opened his eyes to see riya slowly and steadily kneading his head. For the first time he feels nice about it. he remembers how roshni used to knead his head and what she used to say.

Flashback

Arjun opens the door and after closing it immediately collapses on the couch holding his head. They had caught a difficult case that day and although they had solved it within a day but the pressure of the case had resulted in his headache. He is going to get up to get crocin when he felt roshni catching his shoulder and pushing him back into the couch. She walks to the back of the couch and after making him relax fully on the couch started kneading his head. Arjun slowly relaxes at her touch and said "roshni, I am fine. Don't stress yourself. Its just a headache" Roshni said "arjun, you have got so many frown lines. Why do you take so much pressure if it results in such a headache?" arjun replies "because no matter whatever consequences I have to give the victims justice. Its my duty." Roshni asks "duty or passion?"

Arjun keeps his silence. Roshni understands and wounding her arms around his neck she kisses his cheek and said "arjun I understand that what this police uniform is to you. I just wish that you don't get tensed so quickly. You get tensed and your head starts aching?" arjun kisses roshni hand and said "roshni, its just a headache. I will have a tablet and it will be gone." Roshni "yes, it will be gone temporarily." Arjun gives a naughty smirk and said "so have you got a more permanent solution doctor sahiba?" roshni blushes hearing the implied meaning in his tone and tries to go away but arjun pulls her onto his lap. He said "my headache goes when you are with me." roshni kisses his cheek and said "I will always be with you to take away your headache."

Flashback ends

Riya notices how arjun face which had started with a smile slowly changed into an expression of pain. He turns his head dislodging her kneading. She turns his head towards her and said "I know sir that you are remembering roshniji and that is hurting you but sir memories are there both good and bad, happy and sad. It just depends upon us to decide whether we allow the memories to hurt us or just remember with them with a smile on our face." and she continued kneading his head with arjun staring at her.

After sometime riya left arjun to give him his privacy and wandering around the hospital she reaches the garden. She stands holding the railing and trying to control her tears which want to come out. she thinks "I am going to be dead very soon. Yet how can arjun sir see me when he has'nt seen me for a long time. Why am I able to touch things when I could'nt before." She heard a voice say behind her "seems like you have got a lot of doubts in your mind." She turns to see an old lady smiling at her. she asks hesitantly "are you..." she could'nt complete the word. the lady said "dead?" riya nods her head hesitantly and the lady laughs. She said "no, but I have been near death. But dear girl you seem like a really young person to be dead. But death had no age. Anyone can die at anytime. But I am assuming that you are not dead because your consciousness or in other words you are still here. am I right?" riya nods her head and said "I am lying between life and death. Yet I feel myself starting to slip. I am starting to get tired of holding on." The lady said "yes, I understand that feeling. Seeing death so many times in the war and brushing against it has made me aware of many things. One it is only few people who accept death gratefully or peacefully when they have fulfilled their purpose in life. And two when people don't accept death it is because they have someone or something to hold on or fulfill to? So I am guessing you have someone to hold on to?" riya said "yes, but I am confused."

Aun: about what?

Ri: they never saw me before. But now the person whom I trust the most sees me. how and why?

Aun: I wish I had the answer to the how question. but the why question I can answer. You yourself felt slipping away and even though we are ready for death but we still want to say one last goodbye before we leave. Maybe your wish to say that one last goodbye is so much that that person can actually see you.

Ri: for how long before my last goodbye?

Aun: that dear girl you have to decide.

And then the aunty turns to leave. She then said "ooo, seems like my time to depart has come after all." And as riya watches she slowly disappears until finally there is nothing but air in her place.

Riya takes a deep breath and turns to go back to arjun's room. reaching arjun's room she opens the door and gets shocked.
