Part 2-pg3
.
Arjun stared blankly at what lay in his hands. The ETF-Evidence labeled plastic was not enough
to shield the whirlpool of emotions the object was radiating. It was a miniature Taj Mahal
showpiece they had derived from the crime scene. This was no ordinary monument and nor was
this an ordinary man. He could feel the sudden increase in his pulse, the hollowness in his chest
and a very familiar pain. He closed his eyes, struggling to fight back, not wanting to indulge into
the melancholy. But this was a battle he had always lost on many fronts.
"Arjun!..Look at this" rang in his ears. A voice which still made him skip a heartbeat, the only
difference being this was a broken heart's beat. Years had gone by, life had unimaginably
changed. But he had cherished each moment with her and still remembered each of their
conversations. This was one of the grave discussions they were having at the seaside. The time
had come to change their love into commitment and both of them were longing to exchange
those sacred vows, but something was worrying Arjun.
"Roshni,I am going to be frank with you. I have never been accepted this much by anyone
else, nor has anyone else ever given me more happiness than you. You are no longer a part of my
life,you are my life.
He could see her eyes glimmering with tears, but he had to complete..
"But we should think practically about this. The nature of my profession is fully known to you. Its
ruthless, its cruel and its unforgiving. I am willing to lay my life in the service of the country without
blinking, but cannot ask my loved ones to do the same. Roshini, when people marry they don't
just share the house, the life, they share each others happiness, sorrow and sufferings. But you
will have to share my enemies. And I don't think I am ready..."
Roshini stared calmly into his eyes and quipped with a smile-"These words don't sound like
Arjun Rawte speaking..."
"No-because today it is Acp Arjun Rawte speaking".
"Ok,so you are scared of what..our love being left incomplete?"
She had put it more simply than he had imagined, but he nodded.
Just then a little boy passed by selling some artifacts. She excitedly spotted the Taj Mahal and
wanted to buy it.
She thrust it upon him,saying-"So then you make this for me and our love would be immortal. Simple."
He helplessly stared at her smiling face. It was hard to be upset with her. It was an insensitive
comment but was filled with such innocence and simplicity that he just looked away. She did not
understand and he prayed that life should never try to make her understand. Some things are
best left unsaid.
"Arjun, can we just live the moment. No one knows what the future has in store for us and unless
we take the first step,no one ever will know. Fate can destroy everything we love but not the
love. Then what is the fear?.
They looked into each other's eyes for long. They were indeed hopelessly in love and could not
imagine not being together. Arjun gave her a reassuring hug and looked at the stars above-He
silently pleaded with destiny to uphold her faith at least...
He snapped back into the present and caught his reflection on the glass table. And he could
hardly recognize himself! The messy hair, the sunken face, the haunted eyes..Grief was written all
over it. He knew that even if the existence of Roshni's shadow had been wiped from the surface of
earth, he had become her living remain. His wounded heart was her legacy. And,he found
himself to be smiling through the tears.
She had wanted him to build her a memorial of their love...He had become the memorial.
