Chapter VII: Choices and Chances
He laid back on his bed, exhausted from the day. He stared at the ceiling lifelessly. Every single time he came to his room, he felt empty. Three years passed by and he still had hard time adjusting without Roshini. There were pictures of them all around the house, but he avoided looking at them. It was like as if he was running away and trying to find a stray of hope at the same time. He didn't know which way to bend. He wanted to be happy, but even if he tried he couldn't. It seemed as if his body was immune to being happy. Slowly his mind drifted to the events happened earlier in the day and to Aayesha's words.
He was sitting outside the hospital room after dealing with angry Rathore. Arjun was still debating on whether to take Sakshi with him or not. He felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and it was Aayesha. He just slowly looked down again. There was no more awkwardness between them now. Aayesha was not just a team member anymore, she was also a friend now. Arjun would have never thought that he would come to the point where he would make friends again, but he did. Aayesha was a friend now, Chotu, Shree and Liza were his juniors, but he cared for them hell a lot more than. They had become his family, but he was scared to accept it fully. He was scared that they would get hurt also.
"I am sorry about that." Aayesha said and sat next to him.
"It's okay. He has the right to be mad at me. I have let him down yet again. I have made a mistake." He covered his face with his hands. "He cares for all of you. When people he cares for get hurt, he goes to any limit for them. Sakshi got hurt and he cares for her. He is going to do anything possible for her protection. I am surprised he haven't kicked me out of the team yet."
"But it was not your fault. It was just bad timing. And you know why Sakshi did that." Aayesha said looking at his covered face.
"I know why she did that, but I can't do anything for her. I don't want her to feel anything for me. She doesn't understand it though. She needs to let go of everything that is connected to me. I can't give her anything, not even one simple moment of peace and love." Arjun whispered as he stared at the door.
"She is not expecting anything from you. She just simply wants to be around you. She doesn't want you to feel lonely. She wants you to share your pain with her. She just wants to bring happiness in your life. Give her a chance." Aayesha said in hopeful voice.
"I can't do anything as I said earlier, even if I want to I still can't. How can I put her life in risk again? There are bunch of people out there waiting just to put the bullet right through my heart. Every single time I get out of here, I have no clue whether I'll ever be back alive or my dead body will come. If they know anything about Sakshi being important to me, they'll kill her and treat her worse than what they did to Roshini." He replied and regret was obvious in his words.
"But you can't just live like this forever. You have to have someone by your side. Life is too long to live like this. And you can't just decide anything for her. Tell her and after that it's her choice whether she wants to be by your side or not."
"I know she will do anything to be next to me that's why I am not going to tell her anything." He stood up as the door opened and Rathore left without looking at him or Aayesha. "And even if I try to be with Sakshi in any romantic way, Rathore will without any warning just flat out kill me." he sadly joked.
"I am not joking and Rathore Sir is just taking this whole matter to another level." Aayesha said it with slight anger.
"He has every right to do so. He becomes really vulnerable when someone important to him is in pain. That anger which he have towards me, it's not just for this incident. It's the whole pain and sadness that he has suppressed since Roshini's death. He yelled at me many times, but he never really released all the emotions. He is going through way more than what he shows." Arjun sighed while debating in his mind what to do with Sakshi. "That's why I haven't told him whole truth about Roshini's death. The other reason for Roshini's death" After those words left his lips than he realized what he just said. He turned around and faced a shocked Aayesha. For a while they didn't say anything.
"There is more to it, isn't it? The known reason is that Roshini died because of you and the unknown reason is that she died not just because of you but both you and Rathore, isn't it?" Aayesha said as he studied Arjun's face. Truth was right there in his eyes, so how could Rathore just not see it. She thought.
"Aayesha you are too smart for your own good, but please don't tell him. He'll just fall apart." Arjun pleaded. He already knew that Aayesha wouldn't break his trust, but for his own sake he had to say it.
"I won't but let me tell you something. Tell him. His pain is numbed, that's why he isn't doing anything about Roshini's case. He needs to know the truth. If it's too late and he get's to know about it from someone else, it's going to kill him." Aayesha once again put a hand on his shoulder. "Give Sameer a chance to face the truth and give Sakshi a chance to express her feelings."
He got up and stared at the picture of Rathore, Roshini and him together. He was left in dilemma. No matter what path he chose, both Rathore and him was going to get hurt. He didn't want Rathore to go through more pain. And Sakshi, how could he ask her to be by his side. She had already done so much for him. He couldn't ask for anything else from her. When he brought her home, he was already scared to death. Nobody has ever come to his house after Roshini's death except his maid. He felt a little relief when he brought her in and a little scared because he didn't know if he would be able to take care of her fully.
A painful scream brought Arjun out of the trance. At first he was confused, but then he realized it was Sakshi's voice. He almost stopped breathing as the thought of Sakshi getting hurt again ran through his mind. He took his gun and ran to her room. He pushed open the door and she was sitting there crying. He looked around and everything was in it's place. He skipped towards her and froze when he saw her. Her eyes were red and her tears wouldn't stop.
"Sakshi." he said, but she didn't say anything in return. He went and sat on the edge of the bed. "Sakshi."
He said it yet again. She just stared at him with tired face and tearful eyes. He was yet again in dilemma of what to do. He was scared to console her, but he knew that she needed him. He slowly wrapped his arms around her and she also wrapped her arms tightly around him and cried on his shoulder. He ran his hands slowly through her hair to soothe her. She gradually calmed down, but her breath was still uneven. She looked up at him and he was staring at her with broken look on his face.
"I can't walk." She said with disbelief as tears left her eyes. "I can't move my legs. I can't walk Arjun."
He looked away and closed his eyes in grief. Only if you didn't come in front of me, everything would be fine. He was about to get up, she tightened her arms around him.
"Please don't leave me alone." She cried softly. "I am really scared."
He nodded and sat back with her in his arms. They sat like that for a while until she asked him again the questions which basically drilled holes in his heart.
"Will I ever walk again?" She whispered.
He stared down at her and she was looking at him with hope. He simply nodded because he didn't have any words.
"You promise?" she asked once again.
He pondered for a while as the words processed through his mind. He stared at her yet again and nodded. "You will walk and I promise you that."
She slightly smiled as she closed her eyes and put her head on his shoulder. He sat there for another hour simply staring at her face as she fell asleep in his arms. He didn't know whether he made a mistake by promise, but he knew one thing that he was going to fulfill that promise no matter what, even if it cost him his life he would make her walk on her own feet. He tucked her in her bed under the blanket.
He knew Aayesha's words were true and they wouldn't leave his mind, but there were three things he was sure of, He was never going to tell Rathore the entire truth, He was going make Sakshi walk and the last thing which almost killed him inside was that he was never going to reciprocate Sakshi's feelings.
