Avantika,

I am still down with recurrent conjunctivitis, so at times the vision gets blurred bit. It is chutzpah, my dear, and not the way it was, and this, as you would know, if a Yiddish term for damned cheek.

Hey everyone.. Back with another dose of this one! 😉😃

A biiigwala thank-you bear hug to all my B1, all my BB's and and equally heart-felt thank you to Arakshians and everyone who's read, liked and commented on the previous two parts..

I really appreciate your efforts in reading, grasping and then commenting on the work.. 😉😃
Bit pressed for time and hence I'm skipping the personalized thank-you's this time as well..

But just so you know, I've read and loved every single review and comment..

And hence, issi khushi mein, 2 more parts added to the SS..

@Shyamala Aunty and others: Well, yes.. I can't stop writing once something enters my head.. I just have to pen it down.. And besides, I shouldn't restrict myself, I guess, when there are so many of you who're willing to put up with it at your own risk.. 😉😃

@All of you who've requested or rather demanded for more of romance, mush and light-hearted stuff here's a starter for what is about to come.. 😃

@B1, Yeah.. You know, i always do that, right.. The heart never lies! 😉
And maybe doc really is a lucky fellow I guess.. 😉😆

Part 3 in the post below.. 😃

Part 3

Sakshi sat on a bench outside The Odeon watching people rush to book their tickets, girls gossip and giggle over the latest chick flick and couples walk hand in hand, eager to spend some alone time in the privacy of the movie theater..

She turned her wrist and looked at her watch; another 10 minutes before Paul and Emma arrived..

Her eyes fell on her own reflection in the mirrored entrance and she smoothed her fingers over her face..

What had she turned into? Lady Devdas; brooding over lost love! She looked nothing like the bubbly, chirpy Sakshi she had been always..

While the fact that she loved him more than she could ever fathom herself was true enough, but then she loved her job as well..

It was what made her who she was today.. Running behind criminals in hostile conditions, dealing with nail-biting situations, living life on a edge and getting to live her passion, was something she couldn't part with, ever..

Throwing away an opportunity like that and missing out on an exciting and challenging assignment, all because she couldn't face a particular man, didn't make any sense to her..
And hence, she had taken up the offer and was ready to move on..

Working closely with him each day and feigning ignorance to her feelings wasn't going to be easy, but she hoped she wouldn't fall apart this time..
She wasn't going to let her emotions meddle with her professional life..

This time around, she would be a team member to ACP Arjun Rawte; nothing less, nothing more..

He slammed the marker on the desk top and stood up leaning against it..

The phone call had left him restless.. He paced the length of his cabin for a while, as fleeting images of her flashed in his mind..

Arjun ran fingers through his hair not quite understanding the reason for his sudden restlessness..

She missed them all? She was coming back to them.. The team would be happy.. She would be happy..

He smacked himself mentally; That's where the problem lies.. She isn't really happy about it..

And besides something else bothered him as well..

How do I fit into the picture?

Though he had known the answer to it all along, he hadn't been able to accept it to this day..

Emma's words echoed in his ears and he realised yet another thing..

Why has the crazy girl written a memoir on me; so convincing that a woman, I've never met before knows me well enough to describe my own self to me?

Another bell rang in his head reminding him that he knew the answer to that one as well..

Does she really miss me? Why hadn't she called me even once then, since she's left?
Not one call; no e-mails.. Nothing!

Though none of the fellow team-mates had directly mentioned it to him, he had often heard them discussing phone calls and e-mails exchanged with Sakshi..
It was at times like those that something tugged at a far corner of his heart..

Arjun let out a deep sigh and settled on a chair opposite his desk..

I thought we were friends..

His inner voice mocked him the very next second.. Friends?!!

Well, she considered herself to be one, though you never really acknowledged her for it..

The rational part of him agreed to it though half-heartedly..
Yes, he'd considered her to be a liability and sometimes an unwanted baggage on the team when she tugged along to crime scenes.
He, himself had saved her a few times, pulling her away from the line of bullets and arrows..

Her, cracking up and teasing him mercilessly during team gatherings and investigations irked him at times, initially..

However, when she had 'samjhofied' him in his own words, Arjun had come to realise that she wasn't going to take things lying down..
She gave back as good as she got..

Here was a woman who had the guts to look him in the eye and answer him back;
Hell, even shut him up!

And he had refrained from retorting back.. He believed she would back off if he did not entertain her silly queries and ignore her presence around him..
Alas, he had misjudged a certain Miss Anand..

His intense and heated gazes seemed to be having an entirely opposite effect on her.. He had often caught her stare at him absent-mindedly when he wasn't looking; only to mask it with a foolish grin each time he caught her do that..

And besides, something about her eyes held him captive.. He couldn't look away even if he wanted to.. Her eyes often conveyed her unspoken words..

Trust Me..
Those two seemingly plain words from her had shaken him up from within..
The sincerity and warmth they carried made him re-consider the thought several times..

Could he trust her? With his share of pain and misfortunes? With his inner demons? With himself? Each time the answer was a loud and clear no!

Not because he couldn't afford to; but because he didn't want to..

Trusting her meant allowing her access to those hidden pages in his past, when he had fallen apart and to the present and future that was just as murky and depressing..

Yet, her jest for life and positivity made him wish for a life that wouldn't have him shouldering guilt and living in the shadows..
And unaware to himself, he secretly wished to share it with her..

Having avenged Roshni's death had lifted a huge burden off his heart..
All those years, he had lived for the day when he would fulfil his promise to his dead wife and his best friend, and now that was done, he realised that his life lacked meaning..

There was no soul, he could call his own..
Though he knew Sameer Rathore would stand by him until the very end, he was now a married man with a beautiful wife who deserved every bit of his attention and love.

While Arjun was left, being a loner..

Though his team looked up to him, genuinely cared for him and were the closest thing, he had to a family, the fact remained unchanged, that there was no one in the big world that belonged to him..

Yet, there was a stranger, a girl he barely knew who showered him with stirring attention, in every moment she spent with him..

She knew his daily schedule like the back of her hand.
His cutting chai would be served to him when he needed it the most. The cooling in his cabin would be adjusted each night, before she retired for the day.
A plate full of food would slowly be smuggled into his cabin, when he refused to join the others for dinner..
And he would find her standing beside him in silence, being his shadow, that wouldn't desert him even in the dark while he gazed at the night life of the bustling city brooding over his loss.

Those little things, she did for him made him feel belonged, loved and cherished..

And it was at times like those, when Arjun couldn't help but reconsider giving life and love a second chance..

For Sakshi was the only one, who had broken past the huge and mighty barriers he had put up around himself.
She had zoomed past all of them, with her perky and witty remarks and proved to him that happiness in life wasn't just about a glass of cutting chai or walking on the beach watching the sun sink into the horizon.

She had achieved to do something that his best friend and he, himself had failed to do..
She had instilled hope of a brighter and colourful future in him..
Dreams and desires that had died along with Roshni had slowly started to resurface..

However, the longing and hope in her eyes hadn't escaped him..
Months later, he had realised what she expected of him; what she needed from him..

But was he prepared to give in to his heart's temptations? Maybe not..

Sakshi had led a sheltered and secured life till date, while he was marred by tragedies.. She was a bundle of joy while his heart held immense trauma and pain..

She was like the flowing water, splashing droplets of happiness and hope all along, while he was the fire that threatened to consume everything that came his way, including himself.. They were both diametrically opposite..

And that is when, Arjun had stepped back..
Though he needed and desired her, he decided to let go of her..

Sakshi was waiting for her prince charming to arrive on a horse back and lead her into a fairytale land. But he wasn't one..

Though he had gathered himself up and started life afresh, the trauma from the past still lingered within him..
It was all a part of his being and he couldn't rid himself of it, even if he tried to..

Though he was quite capable of loving and cherishing her for as long as he lived, he highly doubted if Sakshi would want to be a part of his dark world, where pain and nightmares outnumbered happiness and dreams.

And hence, Arjun had pulled up the mask of indifference, often associated with him and watched on as his second chance at life and love, left him..

He knew he had broken her dreams, but not one day had passed since her departure that he hadn't prayed for her happiness..
For her to be offered a second chance to gather herself and move on..

A tear rolled out of his eye and he picked it on his finger tip, gazing at it as if it conveyed his heart's feelings to him..

Don't do this anymore Arjun.. She cares for you, she misses you.. She loves you!

And you know it yourself, that the only reason that is stopping her from returning back to you, is you yourself.. Go make it up to her..

You know, she isn't weak hearted.. She will stand by you, being your strength.. She always has..
This time around, you have to be hers..

Make her feel loved and belonged.. Bring back her smiles..

Stop pushing her away.. Hold her closer and assure her that you're meant to be..

You always were..

He inhaled sharply and stepped out of his room, walking towards the only other souls alive who understood him as well as she did..

Arjun swung the door open, clenched his eyes tight and spun around swearing under his breath at the sight that greeted him..

"Hadh hai yaar.. Office mein bhi romance! Kamse kam darwaaze ko toh lock kar dete.."

Ayesha glared at her husband, who still had her hand entwined in his refusing to let go of her while shooting daggers at his best friend for having interrupted a private moment..

Any other day, Arjun would have teased the couple mercilessly; however, today there were important things to be dealt with..

Sameer reluctantly let go of her hand and turned to Arjun who had creases plastered on his forehead after what seemed like ages then..

Ayesha thought of leaving the duo alone and was about to step out when he stopped her, "Ayesha ruko.. I need to talk to both of you.."

She turned around surprised at the soft tone in her senior's voice and occupied a chair beside him,
"Sir.. Is everything fine?"

Arjun hadn't missed Sameer's piercing gaze upon himself and looked at him,
"Kya tumhe pata tha, Sakshi wapas aa rahi hai?"

Ayesha squealed in excitement only to be silenced by the men's hard stares..

Sameer however hadn't missed the slight smile at the corner of his best friend's lips while he had glared at Ayesha..

He hadn't been oblivious to the silent bonding brewing between the two, right under his nose.. But back then, he had known better than to meddle in Arjun's matters..

Since a part of him hadn't entirely forgiven him for Roshni's brutal death.. And besides, though Sakshi was friends with the rest of them, she had always maintained a strictly professional relationship with the ETF Chief..

But today, he saw something else.. A weird restlessness and hope lingered on Arjun's face, assuring him that his intuitions had been right all along..

Ayesha looked at her husband and realised he was thinking along the same lines as well..
Though she hadn't missed the wordless exchanges between the super cop and her newest friend, she hadn't felt the need to question either of them..

Since they were both mature individuals and she knew they would deal with it in the best way possible..

She had been terribly disappointed when Sakshi had left them, citing professional commitments as the reason for her resignation..
Ayesha also had witnessed subtle yet obvious changes in Arjun's behaviour after she had left.. He was slowly coiling back into his shell, shutting out everyone..

And that is when, she had stepped in to mend things between the two estranged friends.. Her efforts had bore fruit and she had managed to stop Arjun from slipping into the shadows yet again..

But a mention of Sakshi returning back to the ETF gave her hopes..
Maybe this is the second chance, they needed..

Though the news had left him surprised, Sameer wondered why he hadn't been the first one to know.

He knew it was highly unlikely that Sakshi would have informed Arjun, keeping the rest of them in the dark..

He entwined his hands together and placed them on the desk,
"Nahi.. Lekin tumse kisne kaha?"

Arjun looked sideways at Ayesha who had a similar question mark on her face and turned to Sameer.

He knew if he could reveal his previous conversation with Emma to anyone, without fearing being judged, it was to them..

And besides, he really needed to share his feelings with his best friend before he finally made up his mind.

He looked up,
"Sakshi's friend and colleague, Emma had called up a while ago.."

Ayesha had been aware of Emma being Sakshi's bestie and looked at him with a raised brow making him grin,
"Batata hoon.."

He stood up and walked to the window as he narrated bits of his conversation with Emma, keeping the more personal bits to himself..

After a few minutes of silence, he turned around slowly, half hoping to watch them bewildered, but what he saw shocked him..

Ayesha stood behind Rathore's chair and the couple had their eyes fixed on him with wide smiles on their faces..

Arjun realised they had had probably guessed it long back and pulled a chair to seat himself closer to them..

Sameer placed a hand on his shoulder,
"So, what's the matter? What have you thought about it?"

He looked up at them and saw similar hopes etched on their faces as well and ran fingers through his hair,
"Pata nahi, Sam.. It's pretty obvious why she isn't particularly excited about returning here, but I'm not sure if I should do what I wish to do.."

Ayesha smiled and sat down next to Arjun,
"You know, she must be really excited about seeing us all.. Especially you..

But she also fears facing rejection, Arjun.. And trust me, it really hurts when the one you love doesn't reciprocate your feelings.."

The men looked at her and saw a faraway look in her eyes which reminded them of the days Sakshi had struggled to bring Sameer and Ayesha together..

Ayesha smiled at the fond memories,
"But now that you have realised it, follow your heart.. Do what it asks you to..
Trust it once, Arjun.. And I'm sure you won't regret it ever.."

Sameer smiled and held her hand,
"She's right.. Our lives are too long and harsh to be led without a partner by our side, Arjun.. Aur tumse behtar iss baat ko kaun samajh sakta hai..

Kismat tumhe ek aur mauka de rahi hai.. Grab it both hands.."

Arjun felt a bit relieved and contented, now that people who mattered to him echoed his sentiments..

They saw a frown form on his face yet again and Sameer spoke up first,
"What's bothering you now?"

He looked away and shook his head,
"Tumhe sach mein lagta hai, main uske liye sahi hoon?
I mean, she's so lively and innocent.. Aur main?
Do you think I'll be able to do justice to her?"

Sameer looked at his wife expectantly and she obliged with a smile,
"Dekha aapne? Ab bhi aap yahi soch rahein hai, ki aap uske liye sahi hai ya nahi; yeh nahi ki Sakshi aapke liye perfect hai bhi ki nahi?

And besides, the very fact that you two are different means that you're perfect for each other, Arjun..

Kuch aisi cheezein hongi jo aap mein hain, lekin Sakshi mein nahi hongi; take your strength for example.. Aap mein bohot himmat hai. You can withstand the toughest of storms without bowing down..
Aur Sakshi mein patience hai.. She will stand by you while you face all of that..

Ek relationship tab perfect kehlati hai, when two people compliment each other..
Aur jahan se main dekh rahi hoon, aap dono bilkul perfect hai.."

Arjun and Sameer smiled at her words and beamed proudly at the lady..
Ayesha looked at them through knitted brows and decided to lighten up the moment, "Woh Chottu ke shabdon mein, ekdum dhaasu ho..
Aap nuclear bomb ho, toh Sakshi bhi kissi toph ke gole se kam nahi hai.."

The men laughed out and grinned..
Sameer winked at Ayesha and turned to his friend, who seemed relieved,

"So, kya socha hai aapki 'unnke' welcome ke liye, ACP Arjun?"

Arjun grinned at his best friend and winked,
"Filhaal toh Miss Reporter ki best friend se baat karne jaa raha hoon..
Mohtarma ko thank you jo kehna hai.."

Ayesha squealed and extended her hand for a high-five, making Arjun raise a brow..

He looked at her, winked and clapped his palm with hers,
"Lekin please.. Aap iss baat ko apne pet mein hi rakhiyega, Madam..
Sakshi ke kayi jaasoos hain yahan.. So be careful..
Samjhi.. ya samjhaun?"

The couple laughed and Ayesha latched on to Sameer's arm as they watched Arjun walk away with a whistle playing on his lips..

He sank into his chair and scrolled through the caller's list looking at the screen for a moment before pressing the call button..

Sakshi's beautiful face flashed in front of his eyes and he grinned,

"Here comes a breaking news for you, Miss Reporter!"

****

Okay then.. There u go.. I'm not sure if I'll be able to post the next one tomorrow.. Fingers crossed!

Anyway, do let me know how u like it.. And of course, though I have something in mind, special demands and requests for the breaking news are welcome.. 😉😃
