PART 2B
A black Honda City pulled up in front of the ETF building. Stepping out of it, she took a deep breath to compose herself. She had always known that it wasn't going to be easy but she'd never known that it was going to be this difficult. She reminded herself of the promise she'd made to herself the other day.
"I'll not run away anymore. I won't back down. Ek na ek din toh usse face karna hi hai, toh fir aaj kyu nahi?"
She entered the building with a smile on her face. The only signs of nervousness were her sweaty palms and the way she was fidgeting with her hair.
"Umm…Excuse me," she spoke to the receptionist, "I'm Mr. Deshmukh's lawyer. Could I see him, please?"
The lady called someone on the intercom. Almost immediately a huge, well –built man with kind eyes appeared.
"Main Commando Chandrakant Patil….vaise sab mujhe Chotu bulate hain. Aayie mere saath…"
He told her about the case and that her client was in the interrogation room with a few officers from the local police while the rest of the ETF team was waiting for her in the Conference room. Absent mindedly she nodded her head…she was too distracted to hear what he was saying….
"aap kuch poochna chahti hain?" he asked her sensing her lost state .
"nahi…kuch nahi." She replied with a smile while just one question kept popping up in her restless mind…"How will he react?"
Just outside the conference room her smile faltered for a second. She paused to calm her erratic heartbeat and then stepped in.
Everyone was there…well, everyone except him. Her eyes scanned the room again. No. he wasn't there…yet. Was she relieved? Yes. Was she disappointed? A little…or maybe not at all.
"Hello everyone… I'm Akansha…Akansha Singh…"
Before she could continue, someone entered the room saying "Rathore maine kaha tha na…" but he stopped on seeing her. He couldn't see her face…her back was towards him, but her silhouette seemed familiar.
She hadn't seen him but his voice had frozen her. She could recognize it anywhere, at anytime.
"Aap koun?" he asked her.
Maybe she was imagining it but she felt as if his tone was slightly hesitant as if he already knew who she was.
She steeled herself and turned to face him prepared for the worst…but it never came.
He stood immoveable like a setter on the scent of quail. He had a peculiar expression on his face. It wasn't anger, pain, shock, horror, disapproval, turmoil, confusion or anything else that she'd been prepared for. It was unreadable…something cold and distant…a coldness bordering on indifference and oblivion. She didn't know what it was…his silence was infinitely more menacing than a flood of angry speech…all that she knew was that it terrified her.
Arjun Raute wasn't the master of disguise for nothing. Over the past two years, he had learnt to conceal his emotions. He'd been wearing the mask of indifference for so long now that it had become natural. No one could make out what went on behind that cover. No one could guess that those empty black eyes still had an ocean of feelings and emotions surging in their depths and that they would discover it if they looked deep enough…but the problem was that the depth was too much to fathom.
Seeing her after so long had brought to life the memories he'd buried long back and for a moment the old Arjun had threatened to resurface. And then the famous 'self-control' had kicked in. However, he knew very well that he wouldn't be able to hold himself together much longer. He could already feel unshed tears prickling his eyes. He knew that one word from her about the past would be his undoing and he would pour his heart out. He was relieved, happy and angry. He wanted answers but he knew he wasn't ready.
That's when he realized that he had closed his eyes. He opened them, forcing himself to gaze back at her honey coloured ones. He could see determination etched in them.
The moment they both had been dreading had arrived and Arjun knew that though he could delay it, he won't be able to prevent it. And for reasons unknown even to himself, for the first time in the past two years, the sea of tumult raging within him felt calm.
