Chapter 5

"No Sir, he's not dead! He's still breathing!" Shree shouted to Arjun. Shree had gone to check the pulse of the body lying, when he saw that he was still breathing but very much weak due to the stabs, while chotu had tackled the killer and took the knife away. Chotu pinned him to the floor, and handcuffed him.

"What's going on?" Rathore shouted when he didn't get any response from Arjun.

"The PM has been stabbed! Mr. Karti stabbed him, we have caught him red-handed!" Arjun finally replied to Rathore.

Arjun immediately took over everything. Shree administered the first stage of first aid to the PM to control the blood loss, and they immediately rushed him to the nearby hospital (sorry don't know if ideally a doctor is supposed to be present and always on call for the PM, but due to the stabs, I preferred sending him directly to a hospital where he'd get the best treatment and had better chances of surviving.) Chotu took Mr Karti with him to the ETF office for interrogation in the meantime.

When they reached the hospital, Rathore had already arranged to be met with the best doctors and treatment available. The PM was taken to the operation centre, and everyone waited outside for some hours. Finally the operation was over, and the doctor came out and said, "He's alive. Miraculously the knife missed all the important organs. We have managed to stop the bleeding, and the wound have been stitched back. He's still weak because he lost a lot of blood, but he's out of danger. The effects of the anesthesia will be over in a few hours and then he'll be in a state to answer your questions."

Rathore thanked the doctor and posted Shree for the PM security along with other officers of the PM. He, Riya and Arjun went back to interrogate Mr Karti.

While they were in the SUV, Arjun asked Rathore about Renuka's death and the autopsy.

"She died of a heart attack. It seems that lately due to her lifestyle and bad eating habits, she was a heart patient. Nothing criminal! Just a simple coincidence," Rathore said.

"It seems too true to be just a coincidence!" Arjun said disbelievingly.

"Riya, as soon as we reach the office, I want all information that you can get on Mr. Karti," Arjun said.

When they reached the office, they went to interrogate Mr Karti, while Riya went to gather the maximum information about Mr. Karti and his past.

"Why did you do this?" Rathore started when they came face to face to Mr. Karti, "And no lies!"

"It's a lie! I killed no one! The PM stabbed himself. Trust me!" Mr Karti was shouting.

Arjun went close to him and gave him a few slaps out of anger, held him by his collar and asked murderously again, "Why?"

Still Mr Karti maintained his statement, that he hadn't killed the PM.

"We saw you with our own eyes! I saw you holding the knife!" Arjun shouted and shook Mr Karti violently.

"What you saw isn't the real truth! Please believe me that he stabbed himself!" Mr Karti kept repeating with both anger, fear and tears in his eyes.

But neither Arjun nor Rathore believed him, they beated him and kept questioning him but he kept on repeating the same thing. After one hour both were tired with this pointless investigation, they had enough proof to show him guilty, but they were ETF officers, and this prevented them from accepting defeat. They knew that he was hiding something but what, no one knew.

Arjun was going to slap Mr Karti again, when suddenly Riya rushed in and stopped him. She called both Arjun and Rathore outside, and informed her about what she had got.

"Sir, Mr Karti has an unknown past! In fact he was discovered some fifteen years ago after an accident by some local villagers. He had been completely burnt, his face completely damaged. That's when they had done some plastic surgery on him. No one knows where he came from, nor what his previous name was, he had as if forgotten everything. That's when the Chief of the hospital where he was treated, took over his recovery, gave him a new name and job in that hospital itself. He worked there for some 5 years, and finally due to contacts, since the Chief of that hospital was very close with the PM of that time, he joined duty as a simple security officer. Due to his work, dedication and honesty, he easily climbed all the ladders till becoming the chief of the security for the PM in the present! He had even saved the previous PM from getting shot once and got shot himself!"

"But have you contacted the hospital from where he was found, and the Chief of that hospital?" Arjun asked Riya.

"Yes I did, and he replied that Mr Karti had completely forgotten everything about his past, and due to some shocks he received on his head at that time of the accident, he had a very minimum chance of getting his memory back ever again."

"Yeh kya hein! Case simple nahin, aur complicated ho raha hein," Rathore said frustratingly.

"Nahin Sir, actually I remembered something about what Renuka said, which I had a little trouble to digest, and guess what Mr Karti's body was found close to the area where miss Renuka's fiance, a certain Amit, had supposedly died, but the body never retrieved! Unless I'm wrong, then there are a lot of chances that he's the fiance of Miss Renuka! However at that time Amit wasn't alone, he had his younger brother , Sagar, with him! Sagar was barely a few years younger than him! Either way Mr Karti is one of them!" Riya said.

"Shayaad, ya nahin! Par humein iske bare mein kuch aur proofs chahiye!" Arjun said.

"Par woh PM ko kyun marega? And then Mrs Simi?" Rathore asked.

"Sir ap ko yaad hein about what Miss Renuka said about Mrs Simi stealing her fiance?" Riya asked.

"You mean maybe someone betrayed someone, and after years they came for revenge!" Arjun said speculatively.

"Good job Riya, humein ab tak sach nahin pata, par at least iss information se hum aur ageh bar sakteh hein!" Arjun said to Riya and all went inside for further questions, but now knowing the right questions which they'll have to ask!

"Why did you kill Mrs Simi?" Arjun asked this time.

"Kill her, I never killed her. She was a pathetic lady, she only committed suicide!" Mr Karti replied completely emotionlessly.

Arjun slapped him hardly, and again asked the same question.

"I said nah that I didn't kill her!" Mr Karti replied.

Seeing that Mr Karti was refusing to corporate, Rathore decided to use another technique and did some acting and told Arjun loudly, "He wont say anything, for now let's just fill the case details and his personal details.

"So how old are you Mr Karti?" Arjun suddenly asked.

Mr Karti never thought that Riya or anyone could have found out about his past so easily, so he replied absently, "40 years old."

"And date of birth?" Arjun asked.

"25^th April 1972," he replied.

Both did some mental recap of the information Riya had provided them and said, " Akhir ek criminal kitna shatir kyun na ho, ek galti to hamesha karta hein!"
