I actually wanted to chime in with some limited ethnographic studies here. I think online and to audience is totally different and choices differ accordingly. My mum, masi and kind of ladies of her ilk don't really choose to watch realistic dramas, meri mummy ko big boss pasand hai aur masi ko sare SP shows primarily because they are looking for some drama to discuss.... aisa nahi hai they can't digest realism, in fact I think agar general trend yahi ho ya options wahin hoon to woh dekh lenge, jaise my mom used to watch amanat, kora kagaz etc. but generally for ladies like them TV and cinema is about escapism. Realistic feel wali shows don't fulfil the purpose of their watching tv it seems.
Anupama phir bhi kafi realistic hai, because they've kept anupama relatable in terms of her depiction as a middle class housewife and her outfits and decision-making approach. I think that last pavitra rishta season 1 was like this. Sad reality is many women who watch don't find anupama's decision of divorce realistic and they would not have found her straightway moving on after divorce digestible so DKP had to show her being pushed to the brink. Tabhi use shah house mein rakha gaya.
Baki i think considering Star Plus's track record, anupama is actually pathbreaking for them considering its a realistic non-romance centered show that stuck around for long (because of its TRPs) during the past 5 years warna no other show that was like this was able to survive primarily because they don't fetch TRPs. Isliye rajan shahi ne yrkkh ka format bhi past 5 years mein romance-centric kiya tha so it fetches TRPs and abhi bhi anupama mein he carefully timed Anuj's entry after multiple insults being suffered by Anupama so audiences accept it and he gets high TRPs
Absolutely true about the audiences being different. But I also know that a lot of people my age mock the show just because it's tooo popular and a lot of people know about it now and they're used to OTT platforms, so Anupamaa may seem regressive. As for the realism aspect, even I watch it to escape a little bit and don't take it too seriously lol so that may be the case for several people also.
And yes Anupamaa is definitely path breaking for Star Plus. Ive notice SP shows often have a love triangle and only that continues for ages 😆 If Anupamaa had been on a channel like Sony, maybe it wouldn't have been that popular.
