HI!!! Skeps and Swaps ;), how are you both? How is Rish?

I'm so sorry for my long absence. Work and health and kids and snow....I think that about covers it, sigh.

The show was just so sad at the end, I stopped watching. But hey, it brought us all together, and it began very promisingly, so no hard feelings. That a show was made on popular Indian tv about autism is a huge stride forward.

I did see "My Name is Khan." It was amazing. Sort of Forrest Gump-like in parts, and had a very pan-American message. The autism angle was well woven into the larger story. I have to say, very impressive, Some other cause du jour will take its place, I'm sure, but it will stay forever with those of us who are living with it every day. (Wish they had dealt with the no speech issue, but they introduced him as always having had some speech)

All these snow days have made the kids loathe to resume their routines. My son has developed a great fondness for piling up his stuffed animals, books, and blankies around himself in his bed, and playing house. We sometimes get him out of there and onto the bus with about 30 seconds to spare. Tomorrow is his parent-teacher conference. I'm kind of dreading it because he has really stalled this year, with the substitute teacher, and she has a long list of things she seems kind of bummed that he hasn't achieved.

On the bright side, the kids are doing well in their sibling study and that has really helped them to start trusting each other. The young woman working with them has a real gift for this. My daughter's confidence has increased a lot. She has fewer days when she feels her brother doesn't like her...poor little thing, she has waited a long time for his affection.

I have to run, but will come back soon. Skeps, how are your students?

Love,
Mahika.

Well Mahi............... lots has happened between the last time we chatted and now.........
on the forum and on my professional front.
I was appointed as an examiner for checking the papers of would be teachers of special children. The paper was on "A General View to various Disabilities". It was a kind of essay like questionnaire touching upon handicaps (🤢) of different sorts. There was a huge segment on MR (mentally retarded) and the hearing impaired. Anyway, two of my weekends were devoted to just this. There were Candidates from all over India. Sometimes the English was so poor that I was at sea at length .........but the points were there. Y'know they were from NE India which is quite impenetrable (to most us). But then these ppl would be teaching in their own language so I was a bit lenient. Besides dears, let's face it, we have to give the children out there some place to get rehabilitated......right? Its a start and with time, better and more skilled teachers will emerge. We have to think positive and not scare prospective teachers away and yet some standard has to be maintained..........
I think in AKA, they did keep to autism in a very authentic way for the first part. The ignorant parents who were at a loss in the beginning seemed genuine. Vikram stepping in to help them professionally was also good. The creatives did adhere to the problems of the autistic well. Antara's symptoms, mannerisms and lack of speech was typical. In that sense I would say, it was a great show that focussed on a disability which the public at large hardly knows anything about.
Hence it was disappointing when they showed stupid things like thugs, terrorists etc. It was so unrealistic ......... it lost its charm completely. I stopped writing the diaries which I religiously wrote because there was no substance anymore.
I made some great friends here ............
my favourite moms ..........the two of you ❤️
my team members who took a good deal of effort and looked after the forum ....... Lav (Realitybites), Resh (Resham) and Pal (Gur) 👏
Our updaters ........ Sejal, Opti, Gur, Varsha 👍🏼
some good friends I made here .........Kalyani and Paddy......🤗
And all the members who made this forum a great place. Love all of you ........
Will be back .......

Yes indeed, I have also met some great people on this forum and made a very special friend my dearest skeppie.
I also was most disappointed with all the leaps and bounds and so on and so forth and didn't agree with the at-times melodramatic turns that the serial was taking and hence kind of stopped watching it regularly.
I still feel bad for monish and his team though, very competent people I am sure about the sudden way they had to wrap up the serial.
Mahi and swapna so take care. And do keep in touch.

Skep - I totally agree with you!! The show totally lost its charm with the introduction of thugs & terrorism...I miss the original cast so much...Billu as a kid - initially picking on Antara & then just loving her unconditionally...teaching his mom a lesson...
I do want to thank AKA because it made me more aware of autism & a special thanks to everyone on this forum, especially Skep, who has indeed become a very dear friend of mine...love you all lots!

wow, skep, so what was the criteria for u to mark these papers?? and was it all India sort of thing?? not localized😕

and coming to AKA, you have to agree, that this was a tv show, for audience which loves drama😆 and in a country where hardly anyone cares about discovery channel or other such channels😆. So they have to add many different aspects into the show in order for them to continue showing autism, otherwise it just wouldn't work. and as we know even that didn't same the show, everything just tumbled.

Hey Folks,
We are doing fine, Rish is well, and doing his thing in school. We are still dealing with where he is to be placed next year, as in whether he will go on to middle school without his classmates or wait another year and have all of them head to the next grade as a unit. We'll be discussing it with the school officials soon to make a desicion anyway.
Mahi it was good to see your post since we had not heard from you in a while. Your tyke sounds so cute with the image of him piling on all his toys and blankies etc. on his bed and him under all of it. Rish does that too, every night before he goes to bed, he puts all his soft toys in a pile next to him snuggles up to his Gymboree blanket that he had since he was 6 weeks old, and covers his head totally like an Eskimo hood with the comforter and drops off to sleep. It's his little ritual every night (except on Fridays when he gets to sleep with us in mommy and daddy's bed. It's his weekly treat, that every so often he tries to expand on and make it a more common occurrence) :)!!!
I am going to miss the show even though I was totally put off by the unneccesary plot lines that they introduced into the show. They did so well until they decided to take the leap and of course have Vidya miscarry the baby. There was so much more they could have done really. But I guess as Mahi said, I am glad that India was given an opportunity to understand Autism Spectrum Disorders in some capacity and have an insight into what the families of ASD kids go through as part of their daily lives. I'm also glad that the forum introduced me to such a lovely group of people, and that we have the chance to chat and share stories/opinions/vent feelings :). Keep in touch everyone, I'll keep checking on this forum for new posts by all of you.
Take Care,
Swaps

The show started off very well -the story-actors, direction, dialogues, realistic and touching. The whole concept was meaningful and significant. The story was going well till for some reason the directors introduced the track of loan shark, terrorist, miscarriage, Adi-Vid hatred, all this wasnt reqd.

Why cldnt they show the lil kids more-Antara's therapy, her progress-her learnings and her flaws, her bonding with Abhi, Billu, her parents, teachers, acceptance by kids in school yet adults dont. I wld have liked to see a teen Antara facing devt issues and how they are tackled.
Why show gloom, agony and struggle? Do the creatives want to imply that parents having Aut-kids have this kind of a struggling life? Its sending such a wrong message. Instead they cld have shown how the treatment is done, how education takes place, how society can extend help, how neighbours can help,...so on....

Towards the end the story and presentation were ruined. Sad it all had started on such a great note. I do hope that this doesnt deter others from taking on such meaningful initiatives anymore.
