The legal dispute over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s estate has taken a new turn as his mother, Rani Kapur, raised allegations against daughter-in-law Priya Sachdev. During a hearing at the Delhi High Court on Monday, Rani claimed that Priya moved quickly to assume control of Sunjay’s assets and business interests following his death in June.
Rani Kapur stated that Sunjay had removed Priya from the board of his company, Sona Comstar’s holding firm AIPL, on 31 March 2023. He reportedly told investors at the time that “something needed to be reversed.” According to Rani, this action contrasts with Priya taking over as managing director of the company less than a week after Sunjay’s passing and resuming her directorship the following week.
She added that she was unaware of any will made by Sunjay and questioned the authenticity of the document presented by Priya. Rani’s counsel argued, “If he truly intended to leave me out, he would have said so expressly.” The allegation centres on whether the will presented by Priya is genuine or forged.
The dispute also involves Sunjay’s children from his previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor. Samaira and Kiaan Raj Kapoor have filed a suit against Priya, claiming that she excluded them from the estate and allegedly forged their father’s will. They are seeking an interim injunction to prevent Priya from managing or reducing their father’s assets until the court examines the validity of the will.
Sunjay Kapur passed away suddenly on 12 June during a polo match in England, reportedly due to cardiac arrest. He was previously married to Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016, and the couple had two children. In 2017, he married Priya Sachdev, and the couple had a son.
The matter remains under consideration at the Delhi High Court, with both sides presenting arguments regarding the control of Sunjay Kapur’s estate and the authenticity of the will.
