Kantara: Chapter 1 makers deny junior artist’s death occurred on set, address false reports

The production house behind Kantara: Chapter 1, a prequel to the hit 2022 film Kantara, has clarified the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of junior artist MF Kapil. The 33-year-old actor reportedly drowned while swimming in the Souparnika River near Kollur, Karnataka, on May 6, 2025. The incident has sparked a wave of speculation, with some links drawn to the film's shoot. However, Hombale Films, the production company behind Kantara 2, has vehemently denied these claims.

In an official statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the production house extended its condolences to Kapil’s family and confirmed that the death was unrelated to the film's production. “We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of junior artist M.F. Kapil. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.

The production house emphasized that no filming was taking place on the day of the incident. “In light of recent discussions, we would like to respectfully clarify that the incident did not occur on the sets of Kantara. No filming was scheduled on that day, and the unfortunate event took place during his personal engagement, outside the scope of any film-related activity,” it continued. Hombale Films also urged the public to avoid drawing connections between the tragedy and the movie’s production. “We sincerely request everyone to refrain from drawing unverified associations with the film or its crew,” they added.

Alongside the statement, the production house expressed their condolences, saying, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of M.F. Kapil, may they find strength and peace in this difficult time."

Despite the clear statement from Hombale Films, the All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has demanded legal action. In a public statement, AICWA called for an investigation into the incident, questioning the transparency around the death.

AICWA expresses deep sorrow over the tragic demise of junior artist MF Kapil, who lost his life on May 6, 2025, around 3:45 PM near Souparnika River, close to Kollur, Karnataka, during the shooting of the film Kantara 2 (Chapter 1)

AICWA further alleged that the cause of death might have been concealed. “Whenever a worker loses their life on a film set, the actual cause is often concealed, and any worker attempting to reveal the truth is threatened. This practice must end,” the statement added.

Directed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara: Chapter 1 is set to release on October 2, 2025. The original Kantara film was a major success, both critically and at the box office, which has raised anticipation for its prequel.

As of now, no official response from local authorities regarding the incident has been made. Hombale Films continues to cooperate with investigations, urging the public to respect the privacy of the deceased's family during this difficult period.
