Chapter #30
Shaurya's gaze darted down when her kiss left him completely captivated. He still wasn't convinced if he was witnessing Mehek's true nature or merely the by-product of the freedom she felt in being outside of India, that lent itself to the affection she freely displayed, but he wasn't of a mind to object to it. In fact, if he had any complaint it was the fact that he was only to be granted a taste of heaven before he had to leave the country that was more bothersome. Although, he mused as he cocked his head and studied her, on the other hand, things could not have resolved themselves at all, and he could have not had the privilege of being with her at all. His MS. He sent a gentle smile in Mehek's direction just before he cupped her face and leaned forward and pressed kissed her on the forehead, lingering there before raising his head. "I am truly going to miss you Mehek Sharma", he whispered.
She had stars in her eyes when she opened them to stare directly at him. "Which is precisely why I wanted you here with me tonight, Shaurya."
"In that case, dare I dream, that perhaps the feeling is mutual, Dost?"
"I will miss you every day Shaurya," she replied sincerely.
Wordlessly he put one arm around her waist and gently pulled her to him. He left enough room between them to be able to reach into the inside pocket of his suit. He extracted a small velvet box. "In that case, I hope this eases the pain just a little. That perhaps in wearing them now and then, you may feel the distance between us is a little less. Happy Diwali, Mehek."
With trembling fingers, Mehek took the petite case and flipped open the lid to reveal a delicate pair of gold 3D lotus flower earrings each centered with a round flawless diamond. "Oh Shaurya."
"I had to strike a delicate balance, with something that would be safe enough to wear in the kitchen, yet significant enough to let you know how special you are to me."
"They are so beautiful," Mehek stated before passing the case back to the baffled man. He looked at her askew, disbelieving that she was refusing his gift until he realized she had freed her hands, so she could remove the dangling pair she already wore. When she had removed the second earring, she palmed them both and then looked back to him. "Will you do the honors, Shaurya," she asked coyly. "Perhaps in recalling that you have made me wear them for the first time, you too will have a memory to sustain you until we meet again," she offered.
Flouting any need for privacy, Mehek swept her hair covering her right ear, back over her shoulder to give Shaurya the access he needed. He performed the task deftly on that first ear, but his entire demeanor changed when it came to the second earring. Whereas Mehek may not have known, Shaurya completely understood that by slightly shifting when he moved to put the remaining stud in, he would effectively block his actions from the other partygoers. He took full advantage, slowing his pace and toying first with her hair as he tucked it out of the way. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a flush come to her cheeks and Mehek bite her lower lip when his fingers moved to stroke a particularly sensitive spot behind her ear before reaching her lobe.
"Maybe I should just this done, what say you, Dost," he breathed close to her ear.
She closed her eyes.
"Please," she implored weakly.
He finished and stepped back, noting with amusement, and a fair amount of satisfaction, that Mehek wasn't even aware of him doing so.
"Well done, Shaurya. Those are truly stunning."
*********
"Absolutely breathtaking, Aunty," Shaurya agreed.
Mehek's eyes popped open and she felt her face heat even more than it had before, when she saw that Shaurya was studying her and not at all focusing on the jewelry pieces Malik's mother was fawning over. She felt desperately in need of the cool drink Aunty was now offering him.
"But if I understand correctly you have had a few days of back to back meetings, when did you manage?"
"Where there is the will, one finds the way, Aunty. Mehek's happiness is worth any bother it took to find these".
She was sure she would combust. Thankfully, the advent of the new topic of his meetings provided Mehek an avenue of possible escape. "Have you eaten this evening, Shaurya?"
"Not yet. We had actually reached a most interesting point of our negotiations; the company had come up with a most interesting incentive to have me sign off with them that we were going to discuss over dinner, when I had to suddenly leave." He raised an eyebrow when he saw that Mehek refused to look even slightly remorseful: flustered yes, but sorry for her actions, not at all... He turned back to his host. "I think I've left them thinking I'm playing hard to get, which is a good thing. I'm pretty sure they would have had me lock stock and barrel if I heard more of their proposal."
"Well it's good that you had to leave then," Mrs. Varma noted.
"For more reasons than that, Aunty."
The older woman took pity on her clearly overwhelmed guest. "Mehek, Beta, why don't you see about getting something for the two of you to eat. I know you have been waiting for Shaurya to come."
Glad for the reprieve, Mehek shook her head. "Ji Aunty."
Indira Varma then turned to her wayward celebrity guest. "Shaury Beta, a word of advice if I may. Don't take advantage of her affections; be moderate, especially in public. You have a very domineering personality which can be both a good and bad thing."
So, he hadn't been as subtle as he had believed, Shaurya thought. If only aunty knew what he had been dealing with perhaps she would be a bit more lenient with him.
"I don't doubt that Mehek has her own ways of handling you, Beta. However, I'm certain she picks the appropriate times and places...just be mindful beta."
Chastened, Shaurya nodded. "I meant no offence Aunty..."
"And none taken. I just don't think you realize the power of your personality, Beta... and eventuality the both of you will be back in India. If you are not married by that time..."
"Mother, please tell me you are not pressing marriage aspirations on our guests now. Are your children not enough?"
"Aacha, well considering your sister has yet to complete her studies, and you continue to remain difficult, I fear I have no option but to go where my efforts are sure to be appreciated. But I'm sure that you have come for a reason for coming, so let me see to our other guests." She took a step, before pausing. "I know I will not have to remind either of you to be good boys tonight of all nights, but just so you know, I am certain it will not be only my eyes on the two of you this evening." She watched both men direct their respective attentions afar from them, noting both of their reactions. She smiled at Melissa who had taken that moment to cast her glance towards them, and noted Malik's determination to appear indifferent. Indira sighed inwardly at her son. Her first born was not normally this slow off the mark, so she could only sustain her hopes that the current situation as she had come to know was different to the point of hindering her offspring's common sense. Time would tell she thought.
Mehek was just returning from upstairs when she must have noticed that he and Malik were together, and he could only interpret her small nod to mean that she had faith in him to conduct himself as he should. She was right, at least on his end it was time put aside the enmity with the man who despite their current disharmony, was one of Mehek's closest friend here. He bit the bullet, and held out his hand.
*********
Another hand; one slighter, and a hell of lot softer than the last, reached for him as he walked by. Malik stopped and looked down, at the dark eyes imploring him to stay a while. He sighed and took a seat next to Mel who looked to have been sequestered to his sofa by his erstwhile neighbor, who had the fortuity to be visiting his parents this Diwali.
"Why do I suspect you are avoiding me?"
"Am I? I thought I was doing what was expected as a good host, and seeing to my guests."
"So you have, and from the looks of things, doing an excellent job. You even mustered up the goodwill to visit with Shaurya Khanna. Are the two of you friends now; you looked quite chummy over there."
"He had the nerve to thank me, for being there for Mehek, and getting her through their misunderstanding. And the great man even apologized to me, believe it or not." Malik scoffed. "I guess it's pretty easy to be magnanimous when you have manipulated everything to your satisfaction."
"I think you should just accept the decision Mehek has made for herself, and leave well enough alone. Even if you have issue with him, perhaps you should bank on the fact that she is a sensible woman who understands what's best for herself. The best thing you, that any of us can do is to be a friend to her and support her the way we would wish for a friend to support us." She pointed out the couple who sat alone at one of the small tables that had been set beside the pool. "Plainly, she is much happier now, so we should be happy for her. Anyway, he's leaving soon so it's not like we will be watching them making out like teenagers every five minutes," Mel joked, "I'm pretty sure Mr. Bad Boy Khanna got a bit of a dressing down from you mother on the subject anyway."
"I must have missed that. Too bad." Malik cracked a smile at the thought.
"Aacha, I am finished. My Diwali is perfect now. She grinned cheekily at the man beside her. "The elusive dimpled smile of one Chef Malik Varma," she explained. "No gift can compare."
"Well you are easily pleased, although I am surprised how one smile can compare to the fair number you have been subjected to tonight."
"I see, so you don't notice your mother in action, but do notice the number of smiles that an over-enthusiastic guest gives me?"
"Over-enthusiastic; how so?"
"It's nothing, but suffice to say I did agree that I would rest with my foot up tonight, just to avoid the examination he thought I should get straight away."
Malik stared at the man in question standing at the buffet fixing two plates, and then back at Mel. She looked very pretty tonight in her high-waisted fuchsia lehenga topped by the trendy coldshoulder crop top. Her accessories were modest, but he liked that they were not too modern. The dainty maang tikka was actually the perfect touch that completed her look.
"Still, it must be disappointing, not being able to fully partake in the festivities."
There were quite a number of guests dancing now, and Mel wistfully watched them. "Nahi, not really. I mean it would be fun, but then I may run the risk of further injuring myself on any number of dances. And then when the dance really matters, like in a few days from now, then I may not be able to partake. Frankly I'm appreciating my dances as I do my smiles: quality wins over quantity in my book any day."
"You are attending the gala?"
"I am."
"With or without a date?"
"Without, unless you consider Mehek my plus one. Her idea as she isn't ready to advertise her private life to the corporation for now. How about you? Do you have a date lined up?"
"I do."
"Oh...I see. Well I guess I will see you there".
"With a dance for me, if you are up to it I hope. Mom wouldn't mind I'm sure. She'll probably insist on it, I expect."
"Mom...you're taking...I like your mom."
Malik smiled again; a double gift for Mel this Diwali, and then stood up. He allowed Dev to take his place with the plate he had brought for her. He acknowledged the smiling man who immediately began buttering up the young woman. She responded positively, but not as openly as she had with him. Quality over quantity immediately came to mind, making him feel much better about the situation he was walking away from.
"Make sure she rests properly tonight Dev. She has a dance or two in her future. He then aimed his attention on Mel. He had enjoyed their discourse. "Happy Diwali, Mel."
An impish grin came to her face, and the chef braced himself for her retort. "Happy Diwali...Malik, thanks for the invite."

**Ping**
... MS, I'm in the mood to dance the night away with the prettiest girl here. Do you think she may wish to dance with me once I finish my conversation?
Mehek stopped speaking to Mel and looked at her phone to see the message sent to her. In her other hand she held the dessert plate that admittedly she had not returned to Shaurya with. He had since left the table they had dined at and was now speaking to an older couple. He looked quite involved in their exchange now, so she had no clue how he had managed to send the message. Still, he at least deserved a response.
...Absolutely. Come to her as soon as you are ready KK. I've heard she loves to dance...with you.
Shauryia read the message and looked up. Their eyes met across the room, and he nodded to Mehek. She smiled in return.
She closed her phone case and went back to her conversation with her friend.
"Mehek, were you just chatting with Shaurya?
"Haan, she answered dreamily. "I can't imagine us without it. And in a few days it's going to be the mainstay in our relationship.
"You're going to miss him.
"So much, Mehek admitted. "It's going to be hard, but we both want it to work. But back to you Mel, have you gained an admirer this Diwali my friend?
Mel laughed. "I don't know if I would go that far, but two full dimpled smiles and a promise of a dance at the gala, has made my Diwali for sure.
"Not to mention your Dr. Dev, who I was actually referring to.
" Oh..Well he is nice, but he's no Malik.
Mehek smiled completely understanding and held up the plate of sweets she had. "With the gala to come I think we need these more than Shaurya does. Sweets are a must before we do anything of note I think.
Mel took a confection off the plate. "Well in that case I will be eating sweets for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but what do you need luck with Mehek, you've already got the guy. What exactly do you have planned?"
"I'm calling it making new memories, but Shaurya may see it otherwise."
