HUMSAFAR WATCH PARTY : Episode 15

Posted by Sadaf On February - 20 - 2014

The problem with Humsafar is an excess of riches .. Almost every time I watch an episode I want to say: "this was One of the best episodes" or exclaim over how compelling the narrative was or how intense the emotional interactions between the characters were without sounding like a broken record. Well here goes the broken record again ... In the novel Khirad getting out of the Rickshaw and confronting her estranged husband Asher was the opening sequence and if I must say so masterfully written by Farhat Ishtiaq. While reading these passages I could feel Khirad's conflict, her desperation. The whole situation was brought beautifully to the screen by Sarmad Khoosat and his team.

Similarly Asher had not gotten over his anger (how could he?) at his supposedly unfaithful wife who now had the audacity to present herself before him without a hint of the shame he thought she should feel. The expressions on Fawad's face from surprise to cold fury to withering contempt brought the depth of Asher's pain and confusion home to the viewer. However angry I was with Asher's character I could see that from his perspective this was just as painful as for our victimized heroine .The most significant part of this scene was the fact that despite Asher's sneering anger, despite his smoldering resentment he could not bring himself to throw Hareem's photograph away. Deep, deep inside him there was a part of his subconscious telling him Khirad was telling him the truth.

This episode showed us a changed woman. Gone, perhaps forever was the nave, young girl who wanted Asher's approval, Khirad was now a mother and had kept her thoughts with in that circle of concern. I couldn't help but contrast this attitude with the other model of motherhood we are shown in Farida who manipulates her child's life to satisfy her own ego. All her concern for Asher's wellbeing rings hollow when she has stolen his happiness. Asher goes through the transformation of parenthood too. When He discovers Hareem he doesn't let his anger at Khirad come between him and his duty or love as a father. I loved how Hareem found her father, the scene was unbelievably sweet. Immediately counteracted by Asher's almost childish " I hate You" hissed at Khirad . Hats off to Mahirah and Fawad for creating such amazing screen chemistry. Khirad is trying to be indifferent to Asher's contempt but her pain is just below the surface. It is anger that saves her..The episode ends with her slap in the face dialogue about taking HER daughter Hareem to the doctor and the audience feels some satisfaction.

A final word about Sara, poor thing has been hanging around for four and a half years with little success. The reason Asher is a memorable character is partly of course due to Fawad Khan's charisma but it was a lot to do with the character Farhat Ishtiaq wrote. While the world is full of unfaithful, convenience oriented easily changeable people there are still those who see fidelity as a virtue. There will always be those who honor their feelings above their circumstances even if they are often in the minority.

Inspite of myself, I read those tit bits of spoilers of episode 17 and they were hilarious!🤣
Makes me even more impatient for the clock to strike at 8 today! Only imagining such cute scenes of Ashar and Hareem has me grinning ear to ear. Pata nhi when I will actually watch them kya haal hoga😳😆

Nothing will be sexier than Fawad in the role of a doting and possessive father! Can't wait

I found the weakest link Atiqa odho except may be in the ginal scene where she excelled.

And that is the point. People relate performances to the goodness of the character as well.. So while they loved Asher Hussain as the loving and indulgent husband, given the circumstances in episodes 11 to 14, people did not like Asher's character...

On the contrary, Khirad not only gained sympathy but her character also came out strong... Infact I love the Khirad - post leap! Khirad - the mother who is strong with nerves of steel and Mahira has enacted that very well.. After portraying the delicate young Khirad, I did not expect such strong performance from her.. So, given her performance in the show + the change in asher and khirad's character portyal had led to this Q as to whether Mahira is overshadowing FK... This said both performed well.. both had their high points and compliment each-other!

Sorry for posting late... have been going through some previous discussions and could not resist posting my POV.

The words I like to use for him are: every muscle of his face is like a brilliant dancer, who come together in a flawless choreography to stage one of the best dances of emotion. 😳

@RomAtHeart..girl u have way wid words...loved it👏

however much flawed asher was, fawad perf just balanced that out and i was never able to hate Asher or his actions. Asher was someone who did wrong but he was wronged too and wht he chose to do afterwards i dont blame him...His grey shades his pain perfectly played by Fawad made asher a very lovable and likable and his plight relatable to me...

It must have been heady...

or me, it was like a debut film becoming a super hit. I am a private person. I like to go to a mall and buy a book. Suddenly everyone started coming to me. Now that is a part of my job... but after a success like that, it becomes so difficult to choose the next project.

You are such a pretty woman. Did beauty become a hindrance to the recognition of your acting talent?

Believe me, I faced that after Humsafar. The articles used to introduce me as the beautiful Mahira ... blah blah. The acting part was very little. Earlier, I used to be very bothered by it. That's why I took up such a different role in Shehr-e-Zaat (a 2012 TV series). People said: What are you doing? You need to go on playing that pretty innocent girl for a while'. I said: No, I already have'.

It must have been tough handling the demands of stardom and work with a two-year-old at home...

I am one of those rare actors in Pakistan who has decided not to do more than one project at a time. There have been times when I have worked 18-20 hours at a stretch. It is worth it if the project is good. My husband is from the advertising industry. He understands. My family is very nonchalant about my career and how it has panned out. Of course, they are happy. I think they want to keep me grounded. To them, I am still the kid with the runny nose!

At that point, was Fawad Khan a big name?

It was a turning point for him also. Of course, Fawad was very popular. He had already done amazing work. But hota hai na, one big project makes everyone look at you? It was almost embarrassing when we became such big names. It was that for him too. I would say his performance in Dastaan (a 2010 TV show) maybe was better.

Finally, Fawad is a rage among girls in India. What is he like to work with?

If someone says anything good about Fawad, it makes me happy. He is exactly what you know about him. He is a great guy. I treasure and respect our relationship. The way he conducts himself and has gone into Bollywood " I admire him a lot for that.

A very well balanced celebrity wid no airs abt herself..admire her thoughts.. Its sad how most media circles and fanbases dont look beyond her look..though my first impression was "how beautiful she is" (kill me now but i find her verrry beautiful but then again thr must be others who dont find her that...it all boils down to indivdual perspective) but then again i liked her acting as Khirad specially post 10 epis, her transition was seemless and effortless. Her dialogue delivery improved and dont know why but i like her voice texture😊

Coming to fawad...boy i like her mutual admiration relation wid fawad..i wish and pray they continue to be like this always. She is one co-actor who always hav high things to say abt Fawad and my pankha dil gets happy to read good words abt moi Fawad😳

New Delhi: In India, Humsafar has been touted as the next big thing on Zindagi channel after Zindagi Gulzar Hai. How big was it in Pakistan?

Fawad Khan with co-stars (left) Mahira Khan and Naveen Waqar

Humsafar came much before Zindagi Gulzar Hai... three years, in fact. It was the first show in three decades that became that big a success. If you see Humsafar and then the other shows, you will find that every show has a jhalak of Humsafar. It changed television in Pakistan. All the people linked to it became overnight successes. Better shows started coming about. Marketing concepts changed. There was more effort in television as people realised how big TV could be.

Fawad Khan is the reason why most (women, particularly) tune in to Humsafar. Smart and suave, Fawad makes Ashar an extension of himself, lighting up the screen with that smile that crinkles his eyes... And yes, that baritone still has the power to hook you.

Let's talk about Khirad in Humsafar.

Khirad is closest to my heart. We have a lot of crying women in serials. But despite going through so much hardship, Khirad is so dignified. For me, to play that role was calming. But at that point, I was just having fun and reacting to what my director told me. There was no method to what I was doing. Today I have method. Humsafar is about two similar people from different backgrounds who get married. The marriage takes place because the uncle promises to her dying mother that he would marry Khirad to his own son. She is from a small town and they had never met. Then this amazing love brews between them very slowly. You see it in how they talk to each other.

Is marrying one's cousin still a done thing in Pakistan?

It doesn't happen much anymore but it's not a taboo. The twist is when everything falls apart, they separate and then meet after very many years.

As a one-film-old newcomer, were you nervous acting opposite a star like Fawad?

(Giggles) Not at all. I was like: Hey, what's up!' I had just come from college, and who is a star and who isn't wasn't a big deal. I was in Pakistan till I was 16 and my higher studies was in Los Angeles. I also worked there. I have sold everything from massage chairs to pashmina shawls to ice cream. Once you have held a mop in your hand, you think of everything as a job. It helps me in my acting.

What did you study in LA?

Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to act. But I didn't want my mother to kill me! So when I went to the US, I kept changing my major. First I did chemical engineering, then psychology. But what I did mostly was watch films. I would work and then volunteer in film festivals. I had tasted independence and didn't want to come back soon. I had part-time and full-time jobs. I put myself through college. I am who I am because of those seven years.

You got married in 2007 and your debut was in 2011. In India, marriage is supposed to diminish a heroine's glamour quotient. What is it like in Pakistan?

I have done things which are out of the ordinary. I was 21 when I got married. I am 29 now. In India and Pakistan, they tell us (actresses) not to get married. Of course, people's priorities change after marriage. But it depends on the way you lead life. I was veejaying when I got married. I had just moved back from the US. I saw Madhuri (Dixit) in Ram Lakhan on a pirated VHS cassette chhup ke with my cousins. Madhuri was singing O Ramji and I thought: Why am I not on the screen?!' I enjoyed seeing Waheeda Rehman and Kareena (Kapoor) too, but the childhood fantasy began and ended with Madhuri.

Are you open to offers from Bollywood?

I would love to work in Bollywood. Someone like Fawad has done that. If the offer excites me, I would jump at it. Ranbir (Kapoor) is brilliant, so is Ranveer (Singh). You have directors like Vishal (Bhardwaj), Imtiaz (Ali) and Karan Johar. Indian cinema is changing and there is so much happening.

What I appreciate about Mahira is that she doesn't seem to ride high on the success of HS.She exactly knows where she stands, always has the ground and honestly gives the whole credit to the director.(for HS specifically).

Mahira has grown with every project that she has done and She has been very experimental with her choice. From a rich self centered Falak to a hopelessly in love gaon ki larki Shano she has tried to attempt completely different characters.
Sadqay Tumhare is only her fourth show and I guess two years break has helped Mahira to get rid of the hype surrounding Humsafar. Finally the critics are also praising her performance as Shano.
Naveen was great in Humsafar but her choice post that has been so disappointing and I hope Mol can give her that much needed break

I dunno know where to say this,so putting it her as these are the most active threads.
I think instead of having Live Transmission thing,Pak TV should organize live chat kind of thing for the audiences and fans to interact with their favorites. The way they have it is so boring and the phone calls are all the same going like'Hume aap bahut acche lagte ho,aapka performance bahut accha tha etc etc'.Moreover these shows are basically dedicated to the producer and directors mostly whereas what people want to see is the actors. For instance,ZGH's LT was all about Sultana Aapa.I know she had a major role in the making of ZGHinto what it is but still it was too much because at the end of the day audience sees the actors and not the people behind the camera.
No offence meant to anyone but just a suggestion.
