That Fawad Khan is a good actor no one doubted for a minute. We were pretty certain that the release of Khoobsurat would cement his status as an actor worth watching out for, but what we weren't prepared for was the kind of hysterical adulation he would get from his fans in Pakistan.
With the actor having just returned from India, a special screening of his debut film was held at Super Cinemas, Vogue Towers to allow Fawad a chance to interact with his fans. And the reaction that he inspired brought home the realization that here was Pakistan's first real superstar in the making. Move over Shaan, Atif Aslam and Ali Zafar, it seems like Fawad-mania is not just a passing malady but an epidemic that shows no signs of abating.
Excited screams alerted everyone to the arrival of the heartthrob, as Fawad was mobbed by a crowd of excited fans who seemed eager to get near him just to bask in the after glow of his success. And we're not just talking 16-year-old starry-eyed females here (even though there was a sizeable group of those). Grown women were reduced to giggling, simpering versions of themselves, making puppy eyes at the actor.
The totally spontaneous reaction that FK's presence ignited left many bemused and bewildered. We overheard one man, whose wife had apparently abandoned him in the crowd to get closer to the actor, grumbling, "Yeh ho kya raha hai? Lag raha hai Shahrukh Khan aa gaya hai. That's how I saw crowds react to SRK once in Dubai and now this madness!"
While the SRK comparison may be a stretch, it's true that Fawad has given Pakistanis a real taste of what superstardom is about. And it's easy to see why. The man wears his celebrity status in an endearingly uneasy manner, his self-deprecating charm makes the ladies go weak in the knees and then there's that smile.
Looking suave in a grey suit, black-rimmed frames and the sexy beard that made his princely alter-ego all the more Khoobsurat' in the movie, Fawad smiled, posed for selfies and thanked the people present like the quintessential star who knows exactly how to work the crowd.
He even took his very own selfie before the start of the movie, proclaiming, "I'm new at this, but I need to take this to send it to the people in India to show how Pakistan is reacting to Khoobsurat," which of course made the cinema hall erupt in wild cheers.
While enough has been written and said about the movie and its lack of originality, the verdict on Fawad's presence and performance is pretty much unanimous across the board: not only is he serious eye-candy but he has the acting chops to give Bollywood heroes a run for their money. What can we say - we've been rooting for him from the very start and are ecstatic that here is one Pakistani actor who has finally made the kind of international debut we can be proud of. Now excuse us while we go and swoon.
