If you watch Humsafar thinking it's the best Pakistani drama as well as something unique and different, your bound to be disappointed..
Watch it as a regular Pakistani drama and for it's execution.. it's simplicity. The storyline is typical and familiar, so there's no point in over analyzing, but what sets Humsafar apart is the way each actor has performed their character, and most importantly the direction.
Also one thing that I've realized over the years is, majority of those who have read the novel are the ones who agree that Mahira Khan was perfect for the role of Khirad and did total justice to her character.. it's not a perfect performance but a good one. She never overplayed Khirad or made it seem rehearsed. I liked the small touches she added to Khirad,. the nuances and what not.. Had another actress played Khirad, i could never see this drama working or being so successful.. she makes you cry with her, and makes Khirad pain so easily accessible to the viewers. especially in the 2-3 episodes prior to the leap when they're separated. And seeing how different Mahira Khan is in real life, it's interesting to see how well she manages to blend in as Khirad actually.
It may always seems like the character that's quiet and shy is expressionless and what not, but Khirad mostly always held back up until her love confession to Asher in episode 9 where you see her say it all.. also she was younger than Asher, in the novel about 8 years in the drama about 5, so she never really spoke up against him and what not... she kept her level of respect even with her pride not juts with Asher but with all the characters.
