I have a question though Sam, what does sakht sakht refer to?? 😈😳

That's probably because you know Sam the best out of all of us!

Also, can you please give a detailed insight on the VM so that I can see it in the light that you saw it. I'm still so flustered with not being able to get it.

The chorus I got but the first paragraph was a little tricky for me. I had to go search the meaning online and this is what I found:

Lyrics:

Bairaagi mann tera hai saheb ji

Mere seene mein hai qaid woh ab ji

Preet ki rakho laaj aye mere rab ji

Rusva hui toh, duniya hasi toh

Rusva hui toh, duniya hasi toh

Lajja se maare re yeh jiya

Piya, lajja se maare re yeh jiya

Meaning/literal translation:

Sir, your heart is carefree

It's locked up in my body

My God, please keep the honour of my love

If I get upset, if the world laughs

If I get upset, if the world laughs

This heart has died from shyness

Beloved, this heart has died from shyness

Kuhu and kunal's bairaag is very clear to this AT now i suppose? I am happy to elaborate as soon as I am able to sit down šŸ¤—

Ooh! I didn't realise the VM would be so controversial. šŸ˜† After my last VM, I decided to take a break and wait for a song to inspire me and when this one came up on shuffle, it immediately brought Kuhu to mind! The translation you found is a bit too literal Aqua, and doesn't quite get at what resonated with me so I will try to explain my interpretation.

I am still waiting on DQ's elaboration (thanks so much for appreciating this one!) but in short, what I absolutely loved about this song was all the different ways it plays on the word lajja/laaj. The chorus is, of course, more lighthearted where lajja just means shyness like sharmana, but the verse uses laaj in "preet ki rakho laaj ae mere rab ji" more like pride or honour, and then the set up of the verse completely changes the tone of "lajja se mare re jiya" where lajja now means straight up shame, more like humiliation. The way the same word can mean so many things depending on context evoked how the same Kunal can make Kuhu feel so many different things, depending on his behaviour.

The verse also evokes that sense of risk that she took on when she accepted this person who seemed completely emotionless and indiffierent (bairaagi) into her heart. She prays to god that he preserves the honour of her love, because if she is humiliated in public and people point fingers, she'll die of shame (lajja se mare re jiya). To me, that spoke so strongly to Kuhu's approach during the fake marriage, and then the chorus highlights *why* she took on such a huge risk, because in the rare moments that Kunal does give in an expose his feelings, nobody can make her more ecstatic or more vulnerable.

@DQ: Your GM is a thing of beauty and a joy forever 😈 Are you suggesting I should have included some humma humma? šŸ˜‰

I opened IF on my laptop just so I could paste an appropriate GIF that portrayed my reaction while reading your explanation.

Goddamit Sam!!! There's so much going on in your head. You need to write captions for a layperson like me. Itna dhyaan se to maine ye gaana kabhi suna bhi nahi. To be honest, I haven't even seen the movie. Now, I'mma go rewatch the VM.

Ah I see sam has done justice to the lyrics and woven them beautifully with the story here. I'll finish typing my thoughts and share

As for the GM, I am glad you guys indulge me. I find that zipper scene more appropriate. Since kunal comes out of that room rubbing his hands 😈

Thanks for going to all that trouble! That is a truly excellent GIF. smiley36

I am obsessed with words and poetry -- that's what I pay most attention to while listening to music -- and moments like this make that all too obvious. This song, and that verse especially is a truly beautiful, layered piece of writing (the tension in the imagery of trying to trap and hold on to someone who's detached from everything? Ufff ). The movie is definitely worth watching for the performances and what it was trying to do. The song was picturised on a precarious love story there too, where Rani stays with Abhishek against her better judgment and the wishes of her family.

I might just act on your suggestion of writing longer captions from next time! 😃

I'll explain my take on it. The female is telling her lover, I get why you treat our love as dispensible (i'll elaborate later/below why kunal does this. Although we have spoken about this before ).. she then goes on to tell him, this love of ours, is still safe with me. In my heart...

Kunal and kuhu both find themselves in a marriage they had least expected. After shweta, kunal had expected to be married off to some behenji types who will do the boring stuff and he will just get on with it. He had hardly expected to find himself with Kuhu, who in his own words is a full rainbow. He was a guy who thought women work when the man is absent or not earning enough. Little did he know that someone like kuhu brings personality to the job she does. That it's not only about money. It's what makes this person kuhu who effortlessly also gets along with his family and does all these cool kuhu stuff. And similarly kuhu had expected to be married off to a guy of varsha's choosing. And that she would then have to do the hard work of bringing romance into that marriage. And guess what, she ends up with this perfect bachelor in town! Kunal hadn't expected to find love in marriage and kuhu hadn't expected it will be so easy to love her husband. So when the world questions their marriage, kuhu is like, bekhudi.. (and like most of you, I am waiting to see what makes kunal experience bekhudi. I think it will he the moment when kuhu is feeling super insecure and everyone is damning her and he will "get" it)... I digress

So Sam's choice of scene for bairagi was perfect. Kuhu was pleading kunal to not throw the baby with the water...😭

Sam already spoke about honour and humiliation... I would be repeating it if I type any more on that topic.

On a sliiiightly different note, haven't we all found ourselves in relationships that gave us that "hit" when we had least expected it. Or like when we try a new dish and it turns out so good that you cant stop raving about the chef and the restaurant. Kuku are that relationship. They have found so much love and understanding. Kuhu wants kunal to meet the standards of the duniya and kunal is scared of falling short of her expectations.
