Chapter 11 - Truths of the Past
In hospital,
Abhira was looking at ruhi waiting for an answer to her question. But ruhi was hestating to speak. Still she knew that they can't ignore this question anymore. She has to tell the truth to abhira. Ruhi finally gathered courage and started to speak letting out a deep sigh. "That was because of me. I was the reason which maasi had to leave.", ruhi confessed with teary eyes while abhira was just looking at her in confusion. "What happened exactly, ruhi?", abhira asked out of curiosity. Ruhi continued while tears were falling down from her eyes.
"One day, me, my matashree, maasi and muskaan bua went for shopping. From earlier day, I was being stubborn to drive the car but my mother and maasi scolded me. Despite that I again tried to ride the car but maasi spotted me. She stopped me and took me out of the car. But I had left hand break unlocked. When the car started moving back maasi noticed it and screamed my mother to step away who was standing behind it. But she was too busy on a call so didn't hear it. Then maasi tried to stop the moving car but she failed and my matashree....", ruhi couldn't say further. A faint sob escaped her mouth.
Abhira was looking at her with sympathy. Now she know how it feels to lose a mother. She genuinely felt sorry for ruhi. Seeing ruhi's state, she was not sure whether she should ask ruhi to continue but she was confused that how did this accident led her mother to leave her family.
Ruhi herself continued, " After my mother's last rites, maasi herself confessed that she is the reason for my mother's demise. But in real it was me. I heard that and misunderstood her. I was so stubborn that I didn't even want to see her face. After that.....after that, B-nanu and badi maa asked maasi to leave. So she left. She left for me and she was pregnant with you then. She took the blame of that accident to protect me from the guilt that I am the reason for my matashree's death. I used to hate her thinking she killed my mother. But when I found the truth, it was too late. I am sorry.", ruhi said while looking at the floor as she was afraid to meet abhira's eyes.
Ruhi somehow looked at abhira as there was a silence more that 10 minutes, only to find abhira lost in her own thoughts. "Do you hate me?", ruhi asked hesitantly as she feared that answer would be yes. Abhira was looking at ruhi for while and left out a deep sigh. She started speaking after few minutes silence which felt like forever to ruhi.
"I don't know ruhi. Honestly speaking, I do feel angry on you for thinking that my mother could have harmed her sister. But then, you were a kid. You lost your mother. I can understand it very well as now I am experiencing it myself. No matter the age, losing a mother is the worst fear of every child. I can't blame you either. Actually it was your elders' fault that they couldn't make you understand that it was an accident not a murder or something. They should have acted more maturely and responsibly. I can't hate you. But I am doubtful that If I can say the same about your other family members. They failed my mother. They literally left my mother, their daughter alone who was pregnant, blaming for her own sister's death which was an pure accident. Like really? That's ridiculous....", abhira said. Even thought she started speaking calmly, her anger took over it when talked about the disgusting behavior of goenka elders towards her mother.
"You are right my dear. It was our fault.", manish entered the room while lowering his gaze as his guilt was eating him raw. He was listening to abhira and ruhi's conversation from outside. Swarna and surekha also followed him. Their condition was also same.
Manish continued, "We know dear that we did a grave mistake by leaving akshu alone. I will never be able to forgive myself for that till my last breath. But now we have got an chance to compensate a little for that. Your mother left you in our care before she left this world. She took a promise from us to take care of you and I will do anything and everything to keep that promise. It was her last wish that you should stay with us, with your family. Please let us fulfill it.", manish said in a pleading voice hoping to convince abhira to stay with them.
Ruhi was confused that why her B-nanu is lying. It was armaan with whom akshu maasi trusted abhira. She gave abhira's responsibility to him. As much as she know, Abhira and armaan's marriage was her last wish. She tried to speak up but swarna placed a hand on ruhi's shoulder and signalled her to stay quiet. Even though she followed it, she wasn't getting a good feeling. Already abhira is angry on them for the way they treated her mother. Now this...Her heart warned her that this lie is gonna cost them big.
Abhira was confused what to do. She didn't know anyone else than her mother to call her own. Even though abhira felt angry on them, she was glad that ruhi told her the truth without hiding the part that it was their fault. She could clearly see that all of them were genuinely feeling guilty and want to rectify their mistake. Above all this, her mother's last wish is what mattered most to her. Her mother has left her in their care which must have given her the assurance that she will be in safe hands even though she is not around. Still she wondered that how could her mother trust them with her when they themselves left her when she needed them the most.Fine, She will give them benefit of doubt till she understands them for who truly they are. She will fulfill her mother's last wish.
"Okay, I will come with you. But not because I accept you guys as my family but because I wanna fulfil my mother's last wish. Don't misunderstand that I have forgiven you for the way you behaved with my mumma. But I am giving you guys one chance for the sake of my mumma. I am ready go with you." , abhira declared her stand.
Even though hurt with abhira's coldness , goenkas were happy that abhira agreed to stay with them. They promised themselves to not to repeat the grave mistake they did with akshara and vowed to win abhira's heart. Ruhi was spectacular about lying to abhira. She felt it was very wrong to hide about armaan and abhira's marriage to him from her. She didn't feel right but kept queit while mentally noting down to confront B-nanu about this.
Meanwhile in rose garden house,
Madhav and armaan were seated on the floor near the bed. Armaan was holding photo of his mother and madhav was feeding him the soup silently. After finishing the soup, armaan couldn't stay queit anymore. He wanted to know the truth. "I asked you something, papa. I need my answers.", armaan stated desperately to hear what his father will say.
Madhav understood the he can't keep quiet this time. Neither he wanted to, earlier. He always wanted to share these with armaan. As of now he was hesitating thinking armaan won't be able to take it as he is already in much stress. But seeing the determination in his son's eyes, he knew this was the right time. So he prepared himself to dive in the past.
"I met shivani in police acedemy. She was also getting trained there. She was kind, brave and fierce at the same time. As we spent time in acedemy as friends, we gradually fell in love. When I informed maa sa about her thinking thst she would support me the way she did when I chose to join police instead of law. But I was wrong. She got furious and as against our relationship. We tried a lot but maa sa didn't melt. She felt that shivani was not a fit to become elder DIL of poddar family because she is from a middle class family. Her parents had passed away long ago abd she only had a little brother. Despite maa sa''s opposition, we got married. Even though maa sa was not in the favour of our marriage, she let us stay in poddar mansion as I stood firm that I won't stay there without shivani. We thought things will fall into the place with time and maa sa's anger will also melt. But things didn't go as such...", madhav said lost in somewhere far away.
"Why? What happened?", armaan asked curiously. Madhav continued, " That time, kajal and sanjay's marriage had happened. Maa sa favored him over everything thinking he would be able to handle the firm. Meanwhile, me and shivani started having fights as I failed to keep balance between our relationship and maa sa's anger. I was getting frustrated seeing maa sa not melting towards us. Shivani was trying her best to win maa sa's heart but nothing. She even left her police job in which she was brilliant to focus on home and I let her. That was my biggest mistake. Letting your mother sacrifice her happiness to impress others who didn't even care for her efforts. Our fights increased day by day. Whenever, something happened between her and maa sa, I either kept quiet or supported maa sa not thinking if your mother was correct or not. Your mother was single handedly holding our relationship when I messed up always. One day, her patience got over and she left leaving signed divorce papers. Maa sa started stating that she was right about shivani not being a right fit to the family, that's why she left. She almost made me believed the same.
But luckily after few days, I heard maa sa celebrating shivani's departure discussing how she intentionally created problems between us, with her partner in crime, sanjay. She said that she wanted to save family's respect as shivani was not a fit for this family. I was devastated and started looking for her. But she just vanished with her brother whom I made joint to a boarding school myself. Knowing that I would look for her, she had left a letter there stating not to look for her if I care for her. With a heavy heart, thinking that she would find her happiness somewhere else, I obeyed her as I felt that I didn't deserve her.", madhav wiped a lone tear which escaped his eyes.
"I couldn't forget shivani, yet maa sa kept forcing me for a second marriage. I had no choice. She chose vidya. Vidya knew that I was married before. Yet I tried my best to avoid the marriage. I even called vidya to speak and confessed about I still love shivani and I am not ready for this marriage. We couldn't see eachother as it was banned due to rasams but I did confess. But still she continued with marriage preparations to my shock. On wedding night, I confessed again that I can never love her like shivani. I left that night because my emotions were getting better of me and I was afraid that I would hurt vidya. I drank all the night drenched in shivani's memories. I knew I was wrong, yet....
Actually, later I got to know that vidya never heard my confession before marriage all thanks to maa sa. She had sent another girl to make me think like vidya knows everything. When I found it, I felt sorry for her and guilty for destroying her life. From then, even though I can't give her shivani's place, I tried my best to give the support and respect she deserved.
After two years of our marriage, suddenly I got a call from a person who introduced her as a distant relative of shivani. She informed me that shivani has passed away years before and I have a son, means you. I felt like the ground beneath me slipping after hearing that. I immediately went to meet her. She told me that shivani left you in her care before dying and as now her health is decorating, she can't take care of you anymore. When I saw you, I didn't need proofs to tell you that you are the symbol of mine and shivani's love. Your eyes and smile resembled her and your face, height were like me.", madhav chuckled a little remembering the moment which he saw his son for the fisrt time.
I took you with me to poddar house. Maa sa was spectacular about keeping you but she let you stay. To my surprise, vidya embraced you lovingly even though she was angry at me. Seeing her taking care of you, she made a place in my heart gradually. But after rohit was born, everything changed.
You suddenly became a mere backup sysrem for rohit in their eyes. Even though I wanted to save you, your mind was poisoned against me by vidya and maa sa. So you became so distant from me. I was already drown in guilt of not being able to take a stand for shivani. Your indifference towards me broke me more. Vidya accused me of cheating her. I was so exausted. I drowned myself in work as a coping machanism which made things worse for you. I know that a mere sorry is not enough. But I am sorry for failing yoy as a father. I am sorry, my child.", saying this while folding hands madhav broke into tears.
Armaan also started crying hugging him. He was angry on himself for distancing himself from his father and his real mother believing in vidya and dadi sa's words. He was feeling so guilty. Madhav slowly pulled away from the hug.
While wiped his and armaan's tears he continued , "When abhira came into your life, I was so happy. You got someone who was ready to fight for you when you needed but decided not to. Also that was the first time you went against maa sa, for abhira, for her safety, for her dreams. I was sure that she is the perfect partner for you.
But when you guys got divorced, my worst fear was becoming true. You also was making the same mistake as me. I tried a lot to stop you. Finally, you rectified your mistake by calling off your marriage to ruhi and winning back abhira's trust. I was so happy for you when you stood by her even after that pregnancy reports. But little did I knew maa sa and vidya are gonna make things difficult for you both. But I thought you won't repeat my mistake after marriage. But unfortunately you did my son. Actually maa sa surprised me by supporting abhira. Was she using abhira against vidya or did she started valuing abhira for the brilliant lawyer that she is? , I don't know. At the same time, vidya shocked me by ger unreasonable anger and pathetic behavior towards you both. But it was you who left vidya's behavior affect negatively your marriage armaan. I am sorry to say but it was solely your fault my son. YOU REPEATED THE SAME MISTAKE WITH YOUR WIFE WHICH I DID WITH YOUR MOTHER."....
Armaan didn't have anything to say. He knew his father was right about his and abhira's relationship. The realization that he made his wife go through thesame pain his mother once faced made him angry on himself. "Cn you leave me alone for a while, please?", armaan requested. Madhav knew armaan needed time to come to the terms with all these. So he silently left patting his son's shoulder gently as he himself also needed some space after renewing old wounds on his heart.

Chapter 12 - Maa 👩👧
https://youtu.be/reej07pEHBU?si=2gsz3B7fyVWiyt1b
In hospital,
After coming out of the room as abhira slept again due to heavy dose of medicines, goenkas were ready to leave. Ruhi stopped manish holding his hand. "Wait, B-nanu. I wanna talk to you", ruhi said in a determined tone. Manish and ladies looked at eachother's face. They knew exactly what ruhi is gonna ask. But Manish wanted to avoid that question.
"Later, dear. Now lets go and make arrangements for abhira's welcome in goenka house. We should make sure that she feels like home there.", manish said hopefully. This didn't go well with ruhi. Why is B-nanu even avoiding talking about this? "How she is supposed to feel like home there when we keep lying to her like this?", ruhi said clearly annoyed with this hide and seek.
"Listen, ruhi. I know you feel that hiding about abhira's marriage to armaan from her is a big mistake. But its for her betterment. Doctors themselves suggested that. They clearly told abhira won't be able to take it.", manish tried to justify himself.
"Come on B-nanu, we both know that doctors told us not to immediately reveal her connection with poddars to abhira. Not to conceal the truth from her. Abhira is already angry on us for the way we treated maasi years ago. Yet she gave us a chance. She trusted us. We can't break it. It will distance her from us.", ruhi said controlling her rising anger. She didn't want abhira to get hurt more knowing they're lying to her. Also armaan has all the rights to be with abhira, to tell her the reality of her relationship with him. But where the hell is armaan? She was getting angry on him too.
"Ruhi, those poddars have only given pain and sufferings to both you and your sister. Well, most of your problems are self-invited though. But abhira, she did each and everything for that selfish family and got only pain in return. Even armaan failed her miserably. After abhira's health reports problem, armaan was the one who convinced abhira to marry him despite knowing how much his mother hated his marriage to abhira while abhira was spectacular about this marriage. Not only abhira, even I fell for his big flat promises. I myself convinced her to marry that man and I curse myself for that. Armaan only knows to speak of big promises but he can't keep any. I won't let abhira go back to that cheater.", manish explained reason behind his actions angrily even though ruhi was stil unconvinced.
"Each and everything you said about poddars and armaan's behavior towards abhira is true. But this should be abhira's decision. We can't just take this much big decision behalf of her. If you call armaan a cheater, aren't we also doing the same with abhira?", ruhi tried to make manish understand. But he was firm on his decision to keep armaan and poddars away from abhira.
"Its not the same ruhi. We are just trying to protect abhira. Abhira won't be able to take the right decision since she has forgotten all her sufferings she faced due to armaan and his family. And armaan will again trap her with his sugercoated lies. Also if armaan is so much worried about abhira, then where is he now? He is nowhere to find. He always escapes after trapping abhira in problems leaving her to suffer alone. I won't let that happen anymore. Now listen to me carefully, noone....literally noone will tell anything about armaan or poddars to abhira. Anyways, poddars won't dare to tell anything after doctor's warnings as of now. I will take care of the rest. Now lets go. We have so many arrangements to do.", saying this, manish left from there followed by ladies.
Ruhi stood there silently for a moment. She knew her B-nanu was right about poddars' cruel behavior towards abhira. Her earlier medications clearly shows how much she was mentally abused. But she still believed it should be solely abhira's decision to what to do with her relationships with poddars. But she couldn't do much as of now. If armaan and abhira are meant to be together, then they will find their way to eachother eventually with time. She could only pray to god to give them courage to face abhira's wrath when she finds outs the truths that they had hidden from her.
At rose garden house,
Armaan was still sitting on the floor staring at his mother's picture. Yes, his mother, his real mother. The one who gave birth to him. The one who would have given him the unconditional motherly love which he deserves but destiny snatched that chance from him. He remembered how his father said that his eyes and smile resembled his mother. He could clearly see it in that photo. He could faintly remember her smell and motherly warmth. He didn't knew if it was his instinct or an imagination as he was yearning for his mother.
He couldn't help but wonder how his life would have been if his mother was alive. He would have probably lived a happy life like abhira did with her mumma till she passed away. He had seen abhira speaking cheerfully about memories with mother, the time they spent together, the fun they had with eachother...and a lot more. Even though there was a sadness in her eyes because her mother was no more, but she was happiest when she remembered about that time. Abhira was always so proud of the upbringing her mother gave her. She was so secured in her life with the love her mother showered on her unlike him. He always had to try hard to earn even a small warming smile, a simple compliment or a llittle loving gesture. He couldn't see how toxic it was. But now everything sink in. If his mother was alive, his life would have been full of joy and he would have seen a normal childhood free from all these burdens of guilt, need for validation despite not being at fault.
Then his mind wandered towards abhira. How could he let his silly girl face the same pain which his mother had to suffer? Its all his fault. His father did try to stop him from making same mistakes as he did, but at the end, he ended up messing things up, hurting his abhira. He wished if his father shared all these before, then he might have understood the gravity of the situation. Maybe...just maybe he could have stopped himself from feeling guilty for nothing and feeling the need to impress everyone. Maybe he could have protected his abhira from his own family's toxicity and from his own trauma. But he can't blame his father either. It was him who always pushed his father away whenever he tried to approach him. He wished he listened to his father for once....He wished he tried to find about his mother himself instead of believing in other's blame games just like his abhira did when ruhi accused akshara mam of being reason for her mother's death...He wished he listened to abhira that this family's love, acceptance are his right, not something he needed to prove everyday in order to earn it. Its been late, but now he knew that he was a mere investment in the firm for dadi sa and for vidya, he was a way for her to deal with the fact she was not madhav's first choice by keeping him under control, showing conditional love as per her convenience.
He looked at abhira's photo in his phone which was on his other hand. He hugged photos of both the ladies onto his chest, one who could have loved him unconditionally but destiny snatched the chance, the other who loved him with all she had without any conditions but he himself let her go far away from him by taking her for granted. Exausted by all these overwhelming thoughts, armaan layed down on the floor while hugging both photos and slowly fell into sleep. In his dreams, he saw him and abhira getting pampered by his mother shivani and his papa sitting by his side holding his hand adoring both mother-son duo.
At goenka house,
Whole goenka house was decorated to make abhira feel special about her homecoming, the younger daughter of the house. Abhira was welcomed with a proper aarthi and a small pooja on her name praying for her speedy recovery. Goenkas made sure abhira doesn't get exausted with all these. As soon as pooja was over, they took abhira to akshara's room which was arranged well so that abhira can stay there. Ruhi guided abhira to the room while elders followed them.
Abhira entered the room only to witness two big portraits, one of her parents and the other of hers with her mother hanging on the wall above the bed. A small smile appeared on her face. As soon as she entered, she felt a kind of familiar warmth there even though she saw that room for the first time. "This was your mother's room. Now its yours.", manish said patting abhira's head lovingly.
Abhira carefully looked all over the room like she was trying to find the love and warmth of her mother in there. Suddenly her eyes stopped at a white colour guitar. Unknowingly she stepped towards that while others were looking at her in awe. "Is this mumma's?", abhira asked in a surprised voice. "Yes, it is. Maasi loved music. She once was a proffesional singer. Didn't you know?", ruhi asked. Abhira nodded negatively. "She did sing sometimes when she was happy or relaxed. But I never knew she had a proffesional interest in music. I thought it was a normal way of expressing her joy. She always had a thing for retro songs.", saying this abhira smiled remembering her happy times with her mother. But her smile slowly died as she faintly remembered her mother getting shot by yuvraj and the news of her mother's death which didn't go unnoticed by others.
Ruhi approached abhira while she quickly wiped her tears which were fighting to come out. Ruhi made abhira sit on the bed. "I can understand, abhira. You are feeling so overwhelmed right now. I know its not easy for you to live without your mumma. But please remember one thing. No matter what happens, we are always with you. We will support you, protect you, stand by you.", ruhi tried to assure abhira that she is not alone anymore.
"Yes, dear. We are always with you. You are our akshara's last memory. We will protect you no matter what. We are your family.", swarna said lovingly as she felt it was needed to make abhira trust them as she could see abhira was still not comfortable with them. "Huh...As if you guys did the same for my mumma.", abhira said in a mocking tone which hurt everyone and remind of what they made akshara go through. "We know we did a huge mistake with akshara. We will have that regret till our last breath. But the situation was such that...", swarna was cut short by an uninterested abhira. "Can you guys leave me alone for a while? Please...", abhira said not leaving a room for more conversations.
Ruhi sighed. Abhira doesn't trust them completely till now. She is only here for akshu maasi's last wish. They have to give her some time. She nodded at the elders and signalled them to leave. "If you need anything, I am in the next room. You can call me anytime.",saying this while caressing abhira's hair ruhi stood up to leave. As she reached the door she heard abhira's voice. "Can you please close the door while leaving?", abhira said in a almost cracking voice. Ruhi knew that abhira hated being vulnerable infront of others. It was only armaan who got to witness that side of abhira but he is not here right now. She was doubtful whether he could be by her side in near future too. She closed the door and left abhira alone.
"Abhira is not even talking to us properly. Even though she is here with us, she feels so distant from us.", surekha said sadly. "Its not easy for her, choti maa. She is dealing with a lot right now. As per her memory, she is still grieving for her mother and trying to come terms with that she has a family about whom her mother never talked about. We should give her sometime.", ruhi tried explain abhira's state of mind. "Ruhi is right. We have to deal very patiently with her. She needs some space. Now, lets go from here.",manish said and took ladies with him. Ruhi gave a final glance towards closed door of the room and left silently leaving abhira to deal with her overwhelming emotions on her own.
Inside the room,
Abhira took a close look of that room. Even though this room made her feel a familiar warmth because it belongs her mother, every single thing in that room made her remind that there is a side in her mother's life of which is she is completely unaware. For the first time in her life, she felt so lost. It was like she was left alone in a jungle with her eyes and hands tied. Her mother was her everything, her family, her friend, her anchor. And suddenly she has lost her everything. It was so painful.
She saw a photo of her mother's younger self on a stool near by. She look it and sat down on the floor. She was staring at it for a while. Her mother seemed so happy in that. What it would have been like to left alone by the people whom she trusted, her family in the most vulnerable point in her life? Also her mother was not alone, she had a little life's responsibility which was growing inside her. She couldn't even imagine what her mother went through.
She was having mixed feelings. On one hand, she was angry on her mother for hiding such a big truth from her. She had a right to know, from her mother, not from any random stranger who claims to be their family. She can understand that her mother might have wanted to shield her from the bitterness of her past. But we can't hide the truth forever. One day, it does come out. She could have told her and asked her to stay away from all these. She could remember how her mother when she told about Mr.Parnanu in resort and asked her to stay away from goenkas. Oh...How she wished her mother told her complete truth and then asked to stay away from them. She is not an idiot to go behind the people who treated her mother so badly. But now...look where she has been landed....
On the other hand, she was in awe about her mother's courage and strength to start over her life all alone with a small infant after this tragedy. So slowly but steadily, she built her own world. She became such a lawyer whom people's heart swells in respect by only hearing her name. Also she became the best mother for her. She gave her a happy childhood, a perfect life with all she had. Indeed she was the best mother for her. But now she had so many questions in her mind. The only person who could have answered them is nomore. She felt so lost.
"Why did you leave me alone, mumma? These people are saying that they're our family and you left in me in there care. But it doesn't feel good for some reason, I feel wired. I don't know how to deal with these strangers. Why did you have to leave me in the first place? That day when I said you that I love you forever, you only said love you in return. When I asked you that why didn't you say forever, you said that nothing lasts forever. Did you sense something like this is gonna happen? Were you preparing me for this? Why didn't you told me about your past? Please answer my questions mumma. I feel so lost. I can't be brave anymore. I am breaking inside. Please hold me, mumma. Tell me that you are with me. I don't know what to do. Please help me, mumma. Please...", abhira was talking to her mumma's photo. Hot tears were falling down from her eyes continuously. She hugged her mother's photos and layed on the floor. She was exausted both mentally and physically. Slowly she dirfted into a slumber hoping to meet her mother in her dreams so she can find answers to her questions.
To be continued....
I tried to portray abhira and armaan's trauma related to their mother's which is completely ignored in the show. They doesn't even bother to show abhira trying to find the truth about accident which frustrates me. Hope I have portrayed their emotions well...enjoy reading...
