Chapter Ten
The next morning dawned bright. Armaan seemed incapable of keeping a grin off his face even as he got ready for the day. Yes, he was sad that Abhira would be moving out of the outhouse, but the happiness he felt for Abhira far outweighed that. His mother had been right. It wouldn't do any good to dwell on the bad, and instead he should focus on the good.
Loathe as he was to admit it, Dadi Sa and Phupha Sa's presence had only made life difficult for Abhira. He knew that she would be far happier living with her Badi Maa and Bade Papa, who would do everything to keep that smile on her face.
With a skip in his step, Armaan got ready for the day and went downstairs, eager to see Abhira off, only to be shocked at the scene in the living room. The Goenka family was sitting there with his grandmother and Rohit. “Dadi Sa, main sach mein koshish karna chaahti hoon,” Ruhi said. “Rohit aur meri shaadi ko ek aur mauka dena chaahti hoon. Annulment papers pe maine gusse mein aake sign kar diya tha. Woh meri galti thi, magar please aap mujhe ek mauka dijiye yeh galti sudhaarne ka. Main ab aapko disappoint nahi karungi.”
“Ruhi, tum humaari beti ki tarah ho… Hum khush hain ki tumhe apni galti ka ehsaas hai aur tum sab theek karna chaahti ho. Agar woh haan kahe toh humein beyhadh khushi hogi, par aakhri faisla Rohit ka hi hoga,” Kaveri stated.
Ruhi turned to Rohit and apologized again. “I know maine tumhe bohot hurt kiya hai, Rohit. I'm really sorry for that. But please… Just one chance.”
“Haan, tumne mujhe bohot dukh diya hai, Ruhi,” Rohit agreed. “But we're married. Aur shaadi ek bohot badi responsibility hoti hai. Main aise peeche nahi hatunga. If you want to try, I will try as well.”
Armaan was surprised at the turn of events, but stayed mum. He knew that him interfering would only create more issues. Rohit wasn't happy with him, and he needed to stay as far away from Ruhi as possible. He was extremely relieved with Abhira's decision to move out after this. With Ruhi back in the house, tensions between them would only increase. At least this way, Abhira would not be subjected to ridicule every day.
He made his way downstairs, and immediately caught everyone's attention. “Armaan, beta dekh!” Vidya exclaimed. “Ruhi ghar waapas aa gayi. Rohit apni shaadi ko ek aur mauka dena chaahta hai.”
Armaan sighed. He shrugged his shoulders and smiled fruitlessly. He couldn't be too disrespectful because his grandmother would somehow find a way to blame Abhira for that as well. “Congratulations,” he mumbled. “I hope tum dono ek saath khush raho.”
“Dua toh dil se de dijiye,” Rohit taunted. “Itna attitude kis baat ka? Kya aap khush nahi hai ki meri life track pe aa rahi hai?”
“Agar tum khush ho toh main bhi khush hoon, Rohit,” Armaan defended. “Lekin, isse zyada mujhse expect mat karo. This is the best I can do.”
Saying so, he left, not giving anyone a chance to say anything else. He was on his way to the outhouse to see Abhira, but was greeted by a procession outside the house. His previous worries forgotten, he laughed out loud at the sight before him. Of course, Badi Maa and Bade Papa would never do anything half-way. Now that they were taking Abhira home, they had to do it with all the pomp and show. His Abhira deserved to be celebrated.
Atul & Kunal were beating the dhol, while Abir & Mishti led the family as they all danced. The noise attracted the entire family outside. “Yeh sab kya ho raha hai?” Kaveri demanded.
“Meri Abhira apne ghar jaa rahi hai, Dadi Sa,” Armaan replied, tears shining in his eyes. “Apne Badi Maa aur Bade Papa ke paas. Apne parivaar ke paas jo usse bohot pyaar karta hai.”
Manish Goenka was surprised at his words. Abhira had a family? Hadn't she told him she was an orphan? But, nevertheless, if it was true… If Abhira did have a family who was willing to be there for her, he was happy. That poor girl had been dealt such a shitty lot and yet had always made the best out of every bad situation. She deserved to have more people in her corner, and he was glad that finally that seemed to be the case.
As the procession neared them, Mishti rushed forward, pulling Armaan with her. He chuckled, dancing with her. As the beats of the dhol reached crescendo, Armaan hugged both Mishti and Abir.
Abhira stood at the door of the outhouse, taking it all in. The colours, the flowers, the joy radiating in the air. All of this for her. She couldn't believe she was so lucky. Abir was the first to spot her and he abandoned the crowd to go to her. Once he was in front of her, he unceremoniously dropped to his knees in front of her, just as they were enveloped in silence. “Bade Papa!” Abhira cried. “Yeh aap kya kar rahe hain? Chaliye… Uthiye.”
Abir shook his head, smiling wide, before he recited his new shayari.
“Dastaan humne suni thi, chulbuli anjaani,
Yeh hai uss hi nanhi pari ki kahaani,
Mumma ki thi chand ka tukda aur papa ki aankhon ka taara,
Badi Maa aur Bade Papa bhi karte the pyaar dher saara,
Bhool jo unse hui magar,
Pari ko karna pada tanha safar,
Gham the jo raaston mein, paanv thode chil gaye,
Par pari muskurayi aise, phool jaise khil gaye,
Bas bohot hua ab tanha safar,
Pari ko mila jo ek pyaara humsafar,
Ab na shaam ka rang hai gehra,
Ab udaasi ka na hai koi pehra,
Pari udd jaaye apne humsafar ke saath, usse pehle bohot dulaar lutaana chaahte hain,
Pehle wala kho chuke hain, ek aur mauka maangte hain.”
He presented Abhira with a set of keys that she took, smiling through her tears. She dropped to her knees too, pulling Abir into a tight hug. “Thank you, Bade Papa. I love you.”
“I love you, Heera,” Abir murmured. “Hum sabki life mein aane ke liye, thank you.”
“Okay, okay!” Mehr hollered. “Aaj koi nahi royega. Abhira ko hum ghar haste hue leke jaayenge, Baba. Please.”
Abir pulled back from the hug and wiped Abhira's tears before reaching up to wipe his own. He stood up, pulling Abhira along with him. “You're right!” He exclaimed. “Aaj ke din hum sab sirf smile karenge!”
Abhira ran into Mishti's waiting arms as Abir followed at a more sedate pace. “Ajeeb Rajvansh, yeh wali bohot pyaari thi,” Mishti commented when he was in earshot. “Lekin tumne mujhe pehle kyun nahi sunaayi?”
“Yeh waali meri Heera ke liye thi… Toh sabse pehle usse hi sunaata na,” Abir replied. “Aur agar tumhe pehle hi bata deta toh tumhaara yeh reaction miss ho jaata na!” He knocked their foreheads together, gesturing to her twinkling eyes and wide grin.
“Abhira…” Madhav called out, making everyone turn in his direction. He opened his arms and Abhira ran into them, unable to stop her tears.
“Mera bachcha,” Madhav sighed. “I'm going to miss you so much.”
“Main bhi aapko bohot zyada miss karungi, Papa. Aur aapke jale hue breakfast ko bhi,” Abhira said, making him laugh.
“Aati-jaati rehna, beta,” Madhav requested. “Tu rehti hai toh dil khush rehta hai.”
“Madhav Ji, Abhira kahin door thodi jaa rahi hai. Bas yahaan saamne wale ghar mein hi jaa rahi hai,” Mishti smiled. “Aap jab chaahe usse milne aa sakte hain.”
“Thank you, Samdhan Sa,” Vidya grinned. “Ab hum sabko Abhira ki itni aadat ho gayi hai ki uske bina rehna bohot mushkil hone wala hai.”
“Yeh baat toh aapne bilkul sahi ki, Jethani Sa,” Manisha agreed. “Abhira… Tu jaa rahi hai? Tere bina hum kaise rahenge?”
“Chachi Sa!” Abhira wailed, hugging her. “Main aapko sabse zyada miss karungi. Sach mein. Main yehi soch rahi thi itne time se ki aapke bina kaise rahungi.”
Manisha smiled, kissing Abhira's forehead. “Haan, toh tu mujhe apne paas bula lena,” Manisha suggested. “Main turant aa jaungi. Pakka promise.”
Abhira smiled. “Chachi Sa aap sabse zyada cute ho!”
“Bhabhi! Aap kyun jaa rahe ho?” Aryan asked, totally on the verge of tears. “Aap yahin raho na… Humaare saath. Please!”
“Aryan, main door thodi jaa rahi hoon,” Abhira consoled. “Aur tumhe jab bhi meri zaroorat hogi, main tumhaare paas rahungi, I promise… Phir woh koi college seniors se ladna ho ya ice-cream date pe jaana ho. Tum kisi bhi cheez ke liye mere paas hamesha aa sakte ho.”
“Bhabhi,” Krish cried, hugging her tight. “I'll miss you sabse zyada… Armaan Bhaiya se bhi zyada. Aap nahi rahoge… Toh hamesha meri side kaun lega?”
Abhira laughed, ruffling his hair. “Main iss ghar mein rahoon ya nahi, main hamesha tumhaari side hoon, Krish. Aur agar inn sabne tumhe zyada pareshaan kiya na, toh tum mujhe batana… Sabki class lagaungi main.”
“Chalo, chalo… Bas karo ab sab,” Armaan wrangled them all. “Saara din bas yahin khade rahoge kya? Jaane do usse! Iss din ka intezaar Badi Maa aur Bade Papa pichle 22 saalon se kar rahe hain. Unhe aur intezaar mat karwao tum sab!”
The chorus gang had been hugging Abhira, all 5 of them crying, but at Armaan's words, they all separated. Abhira turned to her Badi Maa and Bade Papa, not at all surprised to see Badi Maa consoling a crying Bade Papa. He was the more emotional one of the two of them. Badi Maa joked that he had cried more than her during her bidaai. When she'd said it, Abhira had thought she was making things up, but now, she could see that Badi Maa had been right.
“Abir Sa… Apni bahu nahi, beti aapko saunp rahe hain,” Madhav said. “Mujhe pata hai ki aap usse itna pyaar karte hain jitna main kabhi nahi kar paunga, lekin phir bhi… Uska khayal rakhna. Main toh nahi kar paaya, lekin aap please… Uski hasi kabhi khone mat dena.”
“Madhav Ji, aap nishchint rahiye,” Abir promised. “Heera ki zindagi mein ab ghum ki koi jagah nahi hai. Usse sirf khushiyaan aur pyaar milega, aur kuch nahi.”
Abhira faced the entire Poddar family, standing in the lawn, all of them unwitting witnesses to her departure and smiled. “Thank you,” she told them. “Mumma ke jaane ke baad, aap sab meri family bane. Mujhe pata hai ki iss family mein kayi log hain jo mujhe khaas pasand nahi karte… But aap sabko especially thank you ki mujhe napasand karne ke bawajood, aap sab mere saath ek chhat ke neeche rahe. I know aap sab ke liye asaan nahi tha… Kyunki mere liye bhi yeh bohot mushkil tha.
Lekin, ab jab main mere parivaar ke saath ek nayi shuruat karne jaa rahi hoon, main saari kadwi yaadein, yahin chodna chaahti hoon. Isliye, agar maine aapka kabhi dil dukhaya, toh please, bachchi samajhke mujhe maaf kar dijiyega. Maine bhi aap sabke bole hue woh kadwe shabd peeche chod diye hain.
Chachi Sa, Chachu Sa… Hamesha mujhe support karne ke liye, mujhe samajhne ke liye… Thank you so much. Aur saari Chorus Gang bhi. Tum sab bilkul awesome ho! Aap logon ke sahare maine bohot mushkil waqt bhi haste hue guzara hai iss ghar mein.
Papa… Thank you, mujhe yeh dikhaane ke liye ki Papa ka pyaar kaisa hota hai. Maine toh kabhi apne Papa ko dekha hi nahi, lekin aapke saath rehke mujhe ehsaas hua ki agar mere Papa hote… Kya pata? Shayad woh bhi aap jaise hote.
Maa… Humaara rishta hamesha achcha nahi raha hai, lekin, pichle kuch hafte jo humne saath spend kiye, woh mere liye bohot special hain. Thank you, mujhe accept karne ke liye, jaisi main hoon bilkul waise.
And finally, Dadi Sa… Thank you, mujhe itne dinon tak apne outhouse mein rehne dene ke liye. Mujhe pata hai ki aap nahi chaahti ki main yahaan rahoon… Toh I hope aaj aap bohot khush hain.”
Finally, she turned to Manish. He had been watching everything unfold with a pleased smile, and was surprised to be addressed. “Par Nanu,” Abhira smiled. “Aapse mera koi khoon ka rishta toh hai nahi, lekin aapne hamesha mera bhala socha. I know ki kabhi-kabhi humaare rishtey mein bhi problems aayi hain, lekin woh kiske saath nahi hota? Main toh aap ki koi bhi nahi lagti, phir bhi aapne mujhe bohot pyaar diya hai. Thank you so much.”
Mishti stood frigid at the scene before her. She was surprised to see Manish Goenka standing there. He might have not recognized her, given it had been decades since their last meeting, but she would never forget the face of the man who was responsible for so much grief. He was her BF's father, but she had always felt that he was not a good parent. Kartik and him had a lot of issues, and Mishti, always being Kartik's biggest cheerleader, had not liked Manish at all.
Her dislike had only intensified since Akshu's birth. At every point of her life, Akshu had been expected to sacrifice everything for her sister's happiness. It was this man who had enabled that behaviour and normalized it in the household. He had chosen Aarohi over Akshu time and again, for what reason, Mishti couldn't fathom.
It irked her when she remembered that Akshu had dialled an Udaipur number on her deathbed. Who else would she have been calling but Manish? After Abhinav's death, she had no family except the Goenkas. Mishti was pretty sure that if Akshu was reaching out to someone in Udaipur, it was Manish. And that man had the audacity to hang up on her?
No, this wouldn't do. Mishti had been planning to ease Abhira into everything. She had wanted to speak to Abhira and understand just how much Abhira knew about everything that had happened in the family and only filling in necessary gaps. But, if Manish Goenka was somehow a part of Abhira's life, Mishti would need to set the record straight sooner or later. Abhira deserved to know that this man who she was affectionately calling Par Nanu was the reason that her mother had struggled all her life.
“Heera,” Abir sighed, oblivious to the torment in Mishti's mind. “Tum sabko emotional kar rahi ho!”
“Sorry, Bade Papa,” she apologized cutely. “Lekin aapko pata haina… MTAHH.”
“Haan, haan. Tum toh aisi hi ho aur aisi hi rahogi,” Abir laughed. “Pata hai mujhe. But… Agar aapka saara emotional atyachaar ho gaya ho… Toh hum ghar chalein?”
“Ek minute, Abir,” Mishti stopped them. Manish Goenka would be dealt with later. She had more pressing matters to attend to at the moment.
“Yeh lijiye,” she said to Kaveri, presenting her with a blank cheque. “Itne dinon tak aapne humaari bachchi ko apne ghar mein rakha, usse khilaya pilaya… Main nahi chaahti ki uspar aapka koi ehsaan baaki reh jaaye. Aaj jab woh yahaan se jaa rahi hai, toh uski nayi shuruaat mein puraane udhaar ki koi jagah nahi hai. Thank you, ki aapne usse tab panaah di jab uski apni family aisa nahi kar paayi, but ab… Hum hain. Aur hum humaari Abhira ka bohot achche se dhyaan rakhenge.”
Kaveri looked from the cheque to Mishti and back again, appalled. Yes, the Poddars might not be multi-billionaires like the Rajvanshes, but they were not lacking in money. They were one of the richest families in Udaipur. They definitely didn't need the money. Kaveri spent more on charity every month than whatever had been spent on Abhira's stay in the Poddar Mansion thus far.
She raged at the insult. How dare this woman think that she could pay enough money to Kaveri to make up for the fact that she had to tolerate that insolent girl for even a single day? She didn't need the money. What she needed was that girl gone. She was about to say as much, question the audacity of such an outrageous offer, when Armaan beat her to it.
“Badi Maa… Yeh aap kya kar rahi hain?” Armaan asked. “Abhira is my wife. Yeh koi ehsaan nahi, haq hai uska.”
“Armaan, beta… Abhira tumhaari wife hai nahi. Thi,” Mishti replied gently. Seeing that he was going to protest, she continued. “I know… It's just a technicality. Lekin, sach toh yehi haina? Aur phir… Jab tumhaari aur Abhira ki shaadi hui thi… Tay toh yehi hua tha na? Ki Abhira tumhe saare paise lauta degi? Jo bhi resort pe kharch hue, uske law school ki fees… Sab woh tumhe waapas karne wali thi na?”
“Badi Maa, tab aur ab mein bohot fark hai,” Armaan protested. “Yeh sab karke aap mujhe sharminda kar rahi hain! Yeh mera farz tha.”
“Wohi toh main chaahti hoon, Armaan,” Mishti explained. “Ki tab aur ab ke fark mein koi chook na ho jaaye. Tumhaara aur Abhira ka rishta pyaar ka hona chahiye. Farz ka nahi. Aaj, tumhaare saare farz poore. Abhira ki Mumma ne jo tumse vaada liya tha, usse aaj Abhira ki Badi Maa tumhe azad karti hai. Abhira ka khayal rakhne uski family hai.
Ab tum jab Abhira ke paas raho, woh sirf isliye rehna kyunki tum usse pyaar karte ho. Isliye nahi, kyunki tumne uski zimmedaari li thi. Woh meri aur Abir ki zimmedaari nahi… Woh humaari mannat hai. Aur ab, woh kisi ki zimmedaari nahi banegi. Tumhaari bhi nahi. Okay?”
Armaan nodded, acquiescing. How could he argue with that? He truly did want their relationship to not be strained by the shadows of the past. There were a lot of demons there. He wanted their future to shine bright.
Abhira hugged Mishti, crying in her arms. She felt overwhelmed with the love that they were showering on her. What did she even do to deserve it? She felt like an imposter at times… Like it was impossible that all this happiness and affection was for her. She also felt guilty at times for finding a family in Badi Maa & Bade Papa when her mother hadn't been able to lean on them. Her mother spent most of her life alone and it felt like a betrayal to her to be so happy with her family.
“Aaj Akshu hoti toh woh kitni khush hoti, Heera,” Mishti murmured, almost as if she'd read Abhira's thoughts. “She always wanted you to have all the happiness in the world. Woh kitni excited thi tumhaare aane ke liye… Poora din sirf mera baby aise, mera baby waise… Abhinav ke jaane ke baad mujhe nahi laga tha ki woh kabhi itni khush hogi, but tumne usse nayi zindagi di thi. Aur aaj, yeh dekhke ki tum bhi ek nayi zindagi ki shuruat karne wali ho, usse zyada khush koi nahi hota.”
“Okay, Badi Maa aur Badi Maa ki Gudiya Rani!” Abir exclaimed. “Ab chalein?” He asked, opening his arms. Abhira made home in them, squishing herself between Abir & Mishti.
“Waise Badi Maa,” Armaan interjected. “Humein aane ki permission hai?”
“Main nahi dungi toh tum nahi aaoge?” Mishti laughed.
“Aaunga toh main tab bhi,” Armaan admitted. “But aap haan bologe toh chupke nahi jaana padega.”
Mishti chuckled. “Baatein banana bohot seekh rahe ho tum. Iss Ajeeb Rajvansh se itna ghulo-milo mat!”
“Excuse me!” Abir cried, affronted. “Kyun mere saath time nahi spend karega? Beta hai mera!”
Armaan's laughter stopped abruptly at his declaration. He said it so casually, as if it was just a plain fact. The earth was round. Water was wet. Armaan was Abir's son. He felt overwhelmed with the love and acceptance that Abhira's family had shown him had left him humbled at every turn. He had never felt more undeserving. His entire family had only made Abhira's life difficult, and yet here was her family, welcoming him like a long lost son. He vowed, then and there, that he would never make the same mistakes again, even by mistake. Abhira would never have to fight for her respect alone. He would always stand by her, no matter what. Never again, would she ever doubt him. He would never give her a chance to question their relationship or her place in his life again.
This was really beautiful! ❤️
