I loved the Birlas for their progressive family dynamics. Its such a shame they did not explore them more. Yes, in the beginning it did seem like everyone was just living together instead of being a family and they all seemed more concerned about work than anything else. But there was soo much potential for improvement. Its not like they didn't care for each other or anything like that. They were all involved in their jobs and mostly loved their jobs.
I agree that to some extent Ak didn't get the chance to make any major changes in the Birlas, atleast not positive ones. But the problem is that she never tried to understand them or build those relationships herself first. Her idea was to immediately go and start calling people out for everything wrong and start fixing. Like that is not normal, nor is that kind of change sustainable. She should have built her own relationships with people, instead of depending on Abhi's relationships with them.
In general there were so many storylines left unexplored for each of the characters:
Manjari : I am glad she got away from Harsh and grew as in an individual, but she still always remained a housewife with too much involvement in her children's lives. I think it would have been so rewarding to see her explore a career option as well and create an identity outside of Birla house. It would have also greatly improved her relationship with Abhi and made it less codependent.
Harsh : We all know this, but his character def needed an arc after the leap. He could have been Abhi's support during the past six years in managing everything. Providing him with that stable practical POV when Manjari and everyone else was so emotional. They could have also explored a new relationship with Manjari after she became independent and stuff. His issue was always that he didn't respect Manjari, but overtime that could have developed. They could have also explored an issue in their relationship early on that brought about this divide between them. Maybe Manjari did something wrong or maybe PB loved someone else or whatever.
Mahima : I am generally happy with Mahima before the leap. She made mistakes during the first leap and learned from it. I kind of hoped they would give her the perspective of not pushing her kids into a job they don't like and encouraging them to follow their hearts as that was the main reason for her rift with Anisha. Parth and Nishta could have benefitted from that and those relationships could have been slowly improved.
Anand : Honestly, I just wanted him to have a more active role in general. During Anisha death and stuff he did, but after all of that he went back to BG character.
Neil : I really miss Neil so much. But I hoped that before his death he would reconcile with his father as well and explore some more of his mother's side of the family and stuff. I just wish he had not died. He was one of the best characters of this gen and brought so much light and joy into the narrative. Even his relationship with Arohi could have been improved a lot.
Parth : I hate what they did to his character. After the leap I had hoped that Mahima being supportive of his dreams now would have allowed him to explore a career in music. He and Shefali could have also improved their relationship and stuff. I also wanted to see them actually parenting Shivu and Abhira being with them through it all.
Shefali : Same, I hate that they made her a passive character. She had so much spark earlier and honestly could have helped Manjari come out of her shell along with Ak. Again resolving issues with her husband and being a mother etc. I wish they explored that more than exploring this rubbish DV situation.
Basically there were countless storylines to explore within just the Birlas themselves, but the writers were never interested in that. They always focused too much on Abhira and made every problem Abhira centric. They never gave a chance for Abhira to come together solve family issues and actually grow together. The problem was never with the Birlas, but with the fact that they forgot how to write a family oriented show. I wish all the best for the next ML family. In this generation, things were always more about Goenkas and the Goenka sisters.
