My focus of this post is on the Title Song Yeh Moh Moh ke Dhaage. We all must be aware that the song is composed by Anu Malik and Lyrics written by Varun Grover for the film Dum Laga ke Haisha. Although, I believe it must be the lyrics of the song that motivated the title of our show. But for me, as much as the lyrics...it is the tune which is the soul of this song. Whenever the song is played in the background either in Vocal or Instrumental...it triggers in me, myriad of emotions...from love to affection to a sweet-pain or even for that matter...Bhakti (especially the Flute music)...and that my friends, is the charm of RAAG YAMAN!!!
Raag Yaman also known as Yaman-Kalyan (there is a slight difference, though) is one of my favourite Raagas in the Hindustani Classical Music and is the first Raaga that is taught to a student in a Music Class...whether it is Vocal or Instrumental Music. This Raaga is essentially meant to be performed in the late-evenings...as this Raaga gives a feel of the time when you light a lamp in the evening and the soft fragrance of the incense sticks (Agarbatti) is filling up your home. We call it Saanjh or the dusk!! It is basically a very sweet Raaga...with all straight notes except for the swar "Ma". The sound of "Ma" is different in Yaman and is called as Teevra Ma...this swar makes this raag unique and sounds beautiful while performing. I have learnt the Sitar and the first Raaga that I ever learnt was this one.
In the Hindi movies...one can find a treasure-trove of songs based on Raag Yaman. Like "Aaj jaane ki zid naa Karo", "Abhi Na Jao Chodkar...ke dil abhi bhara nahi", "Chandan sa Badan", "Jab Deep Jale Aana...Jab shaam dhale aana"...
Some latest songs being "...Yeh Laal Ishq" from Ram Leela...I find this song very similar to the Moh Moh Song, especially the line "...Tum sang bair lagaya...kaisa...Rahaa na phir main apne jaisa..." Creates an ambience of an intense yet divine love...Listen to this one carefully and you may find striking similarities. Another song from a not-so-popular Movie...I don't know how many of you remember it..."Ghar se Nikalte Hi...Kuch Door Chalte Hi...Raste mein hai uska Ghar" (Udit Narayan sang this one) or for that matter, Alka Yagnik's non-film Album Tum Yaad Aaye...in that Album also there was a song "Saare sapne kahin kho gaye...haaye hum kya se kya ho gaye". Or my favourite..."Nigahein milane ko jee chahta hai" Actually the list is endless...so many of popular melodies are based on this Raaga...that one will virtually fall in love with it...its simple, mellifluous and extremely soothing to the soul. And can be used to convey a variety of emotions...like if u notice, in this show...they play the song in Shehnai...for the feel of marriage...then they play it slow...in the emotional scenes...as well as they play the same tune using very fast beats, like when Aru faints and Mukhi runs towards her...in such intense scenes also...they use the same tune...why so?? The reason being, Yaman has that quality... it is an all-engulfing Raaga and has very healing quality to it...
Hope have not bored you with a lot of lecturing...its just that this song...which I find as a sheer piece of heaven...is one of the prime reasons that the scenes appear all the more wonderful...it gives a complete connect to the emotions 'of and between' the characters...so thought of sharing my love for the song and the magic of Raag Yaman with you all. Take care!
