Looking at the scheme of events we can see some interesting segments coming up in the episodes ahead...so I thought of taking your attention towards something else. Besides, the acting and casting department...there is one more aspect of this show which has never disappointed me and that is the Music Department!! The theme song as well as the overall background music of the show is just perfect and the music triggers the exact emotion that it is intended to evoke in the audience at the relevant moment.
My focus of this post is on the Title Song Yeh Moh Moh ke Dhaage. We all must be aware that the song is composed by Anu Malik and Lyrics written by Varun Grover for the film Dum Laga ke Haisha. Although, I believe it must be the lyrics of the song that motivated the title of our show. But for me, as much as the lyrics...it is the tune which is the soul of this song. Whenever the song is played in the background either in Vocal or Instrumental...it triggers in me, myriad of emotions...from love to affection to a sweet-pain or even for that matter...Bhakti (especially the Flute music)...and that my friends, is the charm of RAAG YAMAN!!!
Raag Yaman also known as Yaman-Kalyan (there is a slight difference, though) is one of my favourite Raagas in the Hindustani Classical Music and is the first Raaga that is taught to a student in a Music Class...whether it is Vocal or Instrumental Music. This Raaga is essentially meant to be performed in the late-evenings...as this Raaga gives a feel of the time when you light a lamp in the evening and the soft fragrance of the incense sticks (Agarbatti) is filling up your home. We call it Saanjh or the dusk!! It is basically a very sweet Raaga...with all straight notes except for the swar "Ma". The sound of "Ma" is different in Yaman and is called as Teevra Ma...this swar makes this raag unique and sounds beautiful while performing. I have learnt the Sitar and the first Raaga that I ever learnt was this one.
In the Hindi movies...one can find a treasure-trove of songs based on Raag Yaman. Like "Aaj jaane ki zid naa Karo", "Abhi Na Jao Chodkar...ke dil abhi bhara nahi", "Chandan sa Badan", "Jab Deep Jale Aana...Jab shaam dhale aana"...
Some latest songs being "...Yeh Laal Ishq" from Ram Leela...I find this song very similar to the Moh Moh Song, especially the line "...Tum sang bair lagaya...kaisa...Rahaa na phir main apne jaisa..." Creates an ambience of an intense yet divine love...Listen to this one carefully and you may find striking similarities. Another song from a not-so-popular Movie...I don't know how many of you remember it..."Ghar se Nikalte Hi...Kuch Door Chalte Hi...Raste mein hai uska Ghar" (Udit Narayan sang this one) or for that matter, Alka Yagnik's non-film Album Tum Yaad Aaye...in that Album also there was a song "Saare sapne kahin kho gaye...haaye hum kya se kya ho gaye". Or my favourite..."Nigahein milane ko jee chahta hai" Actually the list is endless...so many of popular melodies are based on this Raaga...that one will virtually fall in love with it...its simple, mellifluous and extremely soothing to the soul. And can be used to convey a variety of emotions...like if u notice, in this show...they play the song in Shehnai...for the feel of marriage...then they play it slow...in the emotional scenes...as well as they play the same tune using very fast beats, like when Aru faints and Mukhi runs towards her...in such intense scenes also...they use the same tune...why so?? The reason being, Yaman has that quality... it is an all-engulfing Raaga and has very healing quality to it...
Hope have not bored you with a lot of lecturing...its just that this song...which I find as a sheer piece of heaven...is one of the prime reasons that the scenes appear all the more wonderful...it gives a complete connect to the emotions 'of and between' the characters...so thought of sharing my love for the song and the magic of Raag Yaman with you all. Take care!

Deba!!!

LOVED this post! A fellow Hindustani Classical lover! And yes, Yaman is probably one of the most often used Raag in film music!

And for the record, the first raag I learnt to recognize (I did not learn to play, I was more in theatre and writing than in learning instruments and Singing was always Masha allah) sitting with my grand father listening to Marathi Natya Sangeet, was Bhairavi. It is still one of my most favourite!

Love and hugs!

Thanks dear Mannu...u r always kind and appreciative towards me...Thanks a bunch.
Cora...yes, Yaman is one of my favourites...however, my most favourite raaga is Khamaj (bada natkhat hai yeh Krishna Kanhaiya...Ka kare Yashoda Maiya)...also Raag Desh...Basically, for me music is a therapy...it can heal me...so, I thought of decoding this song and my love for this Raaga before you all. Big Love and the warmest hug for you too..Cora...you have been an example of kindness and large heartedness to me. 😊

Well said Mannu!

One of the important thing about various Raags is that they convey a mood (jaati or prakruti of a particular raag) or a ras! Do listen to more songs based on them! You will love them!

And so true about Deba writing wonderful and informative posts!

Thank you Debashri for sharing your knowledge. I'm amazed at all the songs you've named and believe me they're my all-time favorites and were played on repeat for a long time. They are all soulful songs with meaningful lyrics. Love them. And I never get tired of the title track Yeh moh moh le dhaage.

what a wonderful post... gave me goosebumps while reading...
Debo, absolutely ball parked every point is bang on !! its such a soul soothing raga... though i am from typical south carnatic background... these ragas are something that makes north and south cousins in music i say.

The song, back ground they use in the show are true to their theme and soul soothing... there are many such unique roll outs in this show which make it more closer to hearts...

feel happy to be the fandom of the show
love

What a lovely post!!

Raag Yaman is my favorite too. It has the quality of expressing the unspoken emotions which you can't express in words. Every song based on this raag has the ability change your mood and elevate and elate your soul. It's like you are filled with love when you listen to these songs. Pick any song you mentioned in your post and you'll know what I am trying to say.

This song Moh Moh ke dhaage is my all time favorite. I have even made a cover of this song. I must have literally heard and sung this song a million times but it's still fresh for me even now. One of the best creations of Anu Malik!!

Yes, vidi...Totally agree...it has the ability to change your mood...if I get anxious about something... this Raag can calm me down and make me feel better. And yes, Anu Malik has raised the bar for himself with this song...just the best one of his entire career. Thanks for responding.😊
