Chapter 1
He moved the blind aside gently and looked into the room cautiously. He didn’t want to be seen. There she was. Sitting there in front of the mirror An ethereal beauty. Dressed in rich red velvet and brocade, decked up with ornaments, a customary red veil over her face. Not that she needed any of it to look beautiful. That angelic beauty was inherent. Those big wide intelligent eyes, the full lips almost always curved in a smile , the pale skin, long curls and most of all the aura that seemed to radiated from her. A true fairy she was.
She turned towards the window. His body tensed . Had she seen him ? She turned back to the mirror. She hadn’t seen him, he thought relaxed. She was lost in some thought. She was playing nervously with her fingers. Was she nervous about the nikkaah , he wondered. Of course she would be. Wasn’t it natural ? Everyone gets nervous on weddings. After all it supposed to change your life. And in her case it was going to change everything. And she had no idea. A few more hours before her life would go topsy turvy. She was going to live her destiny as they said. She would be his shield. The shield he would wield to protect himself and his family.
Did he want to do that to her ? No. But he had no choice. She was that girl. The Ayaana. Maybe it was really her destiny. Why else would he have found her now after all these years. Now when he needed her the most.
But that did not make him feel any better about dragging her into all this. That’s why he had come there now. That’s why he had followed her around yesterday. To see her live a normal life. Soon she would be a part of his darkness and misfortunes. Another botch on his conscience.
It was time to leave. He jumped down from the window and walked away into the dark night.
She looked towards the window. There was no one there. For the past two days she had been feeling that someone was watching her. But then she had always felt that. Maybe it had to do with the stories her mother had told her when she was a child. Her mother had told her she was special. She had a destiny to fulfil and one day it would come looking for her. She remembered the time in her childhood when she would play in the gardens and tiny birds would fly around her as if they were playing with her. Butterflies would sit on her palms. She would look at them her eyes wide with excitement and her mother would tell her that Nature itself loved her and watched out for her.
But all that had just been fairy tales told by an ailing mother to her little girl. No one had ever come looking for her. She had needed time to accept that. While in the orphanage she would often stand by the windows looking at the gates as if she expected a king to come and take her home like some. Long lost princess. But then she had grown up and realised fairy tales don’t exist. They were make believe stories for children to think life was beautiful.
She pushed all these thoughts out of her mind. Today was not the day to cry over a sad past but to look forward to a bright future. She was getting married to her friend. She had known Shaan for 2 years now. He was the best partner she could wish for. Then why was she feeling so restless ? For the past two days she had been feeling weird. Like something was closing in on her. Getting close to her. No, there was nothing to worry about, she convinced herself.
She walked away from the mirror and stood by the window feeling the fresh air blow on her face. She looked down and for a moment she felt there was someone there. Someone walking away into the dark night.
“Roshni, come down. It’s time to leave. “ she heard her friend call out loudly.
With one last look out of the window, she headed out of the room.
