Is eloping a criminal offense

The threat of calling the police is hanging over their heads. Is eloping a criminal offense in your country?

I dont think the police can do anything other than probably search for them. As both are adults and they can take their decisions. So eloping is not an offense if it is mutual.

But Rakesh says that he will see Sameer's entire family go to jail. This is what prompted the question.

I think eloping in any country, inside of consenting age is an offense. It is called kidnapping.

I think the police cannot do anything is the 2 parties involved in the elopement are if legal adult age and consenting. Even if the boy or girl blames the other for forceful elopement then they may be able to take action.

To answer your question Sakhile, Rakesh was speaking out of anger and no thinking. In extreme anger we do tend to say meaningless stuff but the receiving party will catch on just like Mama-mami said your daughter is not so innocent and not a child, and must have consented to the running away.

He can very well file and FIR for missing girl and blame Sameer too and the police will search and find the two and then question them. He or police cannot do anything beyond that but it depends on what Samaina have to say.

@bold I agree that he is acting out of anger. But when is he not angry? Rakesh is always irrational and emotional. Thus he is not merely threatening he seems to be certain that he will go to the police. So I'm glad that as both Sameer and Naina are legally adults the police cannot do anything. I think they will tell the truth and maybe then Rakesh, Taiji and Tauji will be in trouble for trying to force Naina to marry Sharad. Is attempting to force a marriage and offense. I would think so.
