Note- Flashback is in Italics.

Chapter 3

A pair of clueless eyes looked on as the people around hugged each other tight. Nikhil could not make head or tail out of it, but the moment he saw his mother crying, he himself burst into a bout of tears. Everyone turned towards him and Naina immediately rushed, picking him up in her arms. He threw his tiny arms around her neck and hid his face in her neck, while Naina rubbed his back. Sameer quickly wiped his and Naina's tears, signalling everyone to wipe theirs too, and caressing Nikhil's hair, said in an ordering tone "Sab rona band karo. Khaas kar ke tum dono maa-bete. Naina, tumhe pata hai na tumhe rota dekh ke Nikhil bhi rone lagta hai. Poonch hai apni mummy ki." "Paa" Nikhil whined. "Sameer, mere bete ko aise mat bolo." Naina warned. "Chup ho ja Niku." Nikhil had stopped crying but was still sniffing.

"Chee! Ye Niku kya hai!" Preeti made a face, "naam bigad rahi hai mere bhanje ka. Itna accha hero types naam hai, Nikhil. Niku Phiku mat bula." She went near Naina and on hearing his name, Nikhil turned his face to look at her. She smiled at him and he sniffed again. Sameer quipped in between, "Ye humesha aise hi karti hai. Wo to main nahi maana warna ye to bhayanak naam rakhne wali thi Nikhil ka." Preeti looked on curiously and he continued, "Naresh.. Socho, Naresh Maheshwari! Rakesh sir jaisa naam hota to mera beta bhi Rakesh sir jaisa ban jata. Chidchida" Naina, now ready for the argument, gave Nikhil to Preeti, and a sarcastic smile to Sameer "Haan, Neil to bohot accha naam tha na. Arey modern naam aur angrezo ke naam mein na fark hota hai. Lekin tumhe kaun samjhaye." The banter would've been never-ending, but Swati shouted, "Chup karo dono. Itna accha naam rakh diya maine tumhare bete ka lekin tum dono ka jhagda nahi khatam hua."

"Tune bataya tha naam? Arey waah!" Preeti praised Swati, who winked at her, "Mayapuri padhne ka fayda. Agar panditji nahi bolte ki mahurat nikal jayega, to ye dono to maante hi nahi." "Tujhe kaise pata?' Preeti asked confused. "Arey hum wahin pe to the, pata nahi hoga kya! Pagal" Swati laughed it off.

"Matlab tum teeno gaye the Nikhil ke naamkaran pe!" Preeti's voice boomed, startling them all. "Tum sab har baar mujhe chhod ke chale jate ho. Picture ho ya Mount Abu. Mera to school mein section bhi alag tha. Bhagwan hi sazish mein lage hain!" Preeti frowned. "Ye dono na Jaipur base the, Jamnagar nahi jo tujhe le jate. Kya bolti tu apne ghar pe?" Munna reasoned. "Wo main dekh leti na. Sidhi baat ye hai ki tum logo ko kabhi mujhe kuch batana hi nhi hota." with that, Preeti sat on the nearest chair and began playing with Nikhil, ignoring everyone else. Munna rolled his eyes, while Swati and Pandit sighed.

"Preeti.." Naina called but Preeti ignored. "Sun to sahi" said Naina, trying to turn Preeti's face towards her, but she jerked her hand away. She then knelt down infront of Preeti and held her hand despite her attempts to pull away, and explained "Samajhne ki koshish kar Preeti. Tujhe ye sab pata hota aur is baat ki bhanak bhi ghar pe kisi ko lag jati, to tu bhi jaanti hai kya hota. Chachaji Chachiji ko pehle se meri wajah se taane sunne padte hai, tujhe lekar bhi sunne padte. Aur ye na hum chahte the, na tu!"

Preeti knew Naina was right. "Aaj ke baad mujhse kuch chhupaya to Pooja Didi ki shaadi ke waqt jaise thappad mare the na, waise hi lagaungi!" she warned Naina, who giggled and nodded, "Laga lena. Haq hai tera. Meri Madhuri!" and she hugged her. Thinking that the sisters might get emotional again, Pandit joked "Koi Madhuri wadhuri nahi hai. Aaj ek din mein jitna royi hai na, Nirupa Roy lag rahi hai!" Preeti yelled, "Naina, ise bol chup rahe. Main Madhuri hu chahe Nirupa Roy, ise kya?" and Pandit's face fell.

"Shaant saaliji!" Sameer interrupted, and knowing too well how food affected the mood of everyone present there, suggested, "Hum sab itne time baad wapas mile hain, celebration to banta hai. To sab jaldi decide karo kya khaoge"

"Kachori" came Munna and Pandit's instant demand. Sameer shook his head thinking how his two yaars were still the same kachori lovers as they were four years ago. "Accha thik hai. Pehle naashta kar lo sab, phir kachoriyaan bana dungi main." Naina smiled and then six of them settled down on the breakfast table, with Nikhil sitting in Munna's lap.

After breakfast, Naina went to the kitchen and gathered the ingredients for making kachori on the counter. Swati and Preeti decided to help her so that the girls could also talk simultaneously. Naina came to the living room, where Sameer, Munna and Pandit were watching cricket, and asked Sameer, "Sameer, ghar pe ketchup nahi hai. To tum bazar se le aaoge? Aur sath mein koi mithaai aur cold drink bhi le ana." Sameer leaned towards her and whispered "Jo hukum Mrs Maheshwari!" making her blush.

Sameer quickly grabbed his car keys, "Chalo Munna Pandit. Bazar se kuch samaan leke ana hai." But Munna Pandit looked at each other and gave a knowing smile. "Car mein nahi, isme jayenge aaj." Munna waved Sameer's bike keys infront of him. Sameer happily flung his arms around his friends' shoulders and the trio walked towards the door. "Aaja hero!" Pandit made Nikhil sit on the petrol tank and then himself sat between Sameer and Munna. Soon their bike sped out to the sweets shop, which was just a lane or two away.

Inside the kitchen, Swati was kneading the dough for kachoris while Naina and Preeti were preparing the filling. Seeing how instinctively Preeti was adding spices, Naina wondered, "Tujhe kachori banani ati hai Preeti?" Preeti smiled, "Seekh li" Naina asked excitedly, "Aur kya kya banana seekh gayi?" One last time Preeti tasted the filling, kept it aside and then replied, "Zyada kuch nahi seekha. Bas kuch sabziyaan banani ati hai aur ye samose kachori."

"Ab shaadi ki umar ho gayi na humari ladki ki" Swati teased. "To kya tere liye ladka dekhna shuru kar diya? Isliye tu ye sab seekh rahi hai?" Naina asked surprised. "Shaadi ki umar hone mein aur shaadi hone mein bohot fark hota hai." Preeti muttered. Naina sensed something weird in it, but brushed off the thought for the time being.

Soon the kachoris were ready and the boys too were back with all the things Naina had asked them to bring from the market. Ramdhari quickly took out the jalebi from packets into plates and presented them on the dining table. The six friends enjoyed the snacks with cold drinks and talked for hours, about their school memories, teasing Sameer and Naina about Mount Abu trip and the college days. After finishing all the snacks, Sameer, Munna and Pandit were back to their cricket match, while Naina, Swati and Preeti headed to Sameer and Naina's room.

Before Naina could even sit, Preeti fired her with questions, "Ab mujhe sab kuch bata. Tum log kahan gaye the? Shaadi kahan ki? Kaise ki? Aur honeymoon kahan manaya?" she ended it with a teasing wink. With a painful smile, Naina reminisced the events that took place four years back.

"Aur koi raasta nahi hai?" Sameer asked as he casted one last long glance at the white bungalow infront of him. His Nanu's house. He turned to look at Naina, who helplessly muttered, "Iske alawa sirf ek raasta hai.. Ek dusre ko kho dena." Sameer shivered at the thought of losing her. He held her hand tightly and they ran to the autorickshaw that was standing at some distance from his house. He saw Munna waiting for them near the auto. They quickly got inside and within few minutes, reached the bus station, where Pandit was waiting for them. He handed them the tickets to Jaipur and also some money. Sameer pulled Munna Pandit in a quick hug and then boarded the bus with Naina. "Apna aur Naina ka khayal rakhna" Munna voiced in concern, while Sameer smiled and said, "Tum dono bhi." Naina came forward and requested, "Preeti ko is bare mein kuch nahi pata. Tum dono bhi please kuch mat batana use. Wo bewajah phas jayegi." Munna Pandit nodded in assurance. The bus started and Sameer and Naina waved at Munna Pandit until they disappeared from their sight.

After Sameer and Naina signed the papers, the marriage registrar announced, "Aaj se aap dono kanooni taur par pati-patni hain." Sameer held Naina's hand, locking their fingers together, as they smiled at each other and their future together.

"Arey bol na!" Preeti jerked Naina out of the flashback. "Jaipur mein court marriage hui thi. Aur phir Sameer ki job aur humare settle hone ke chakkar mein honeymoon ka khayal hi nahi aya. Kabhi socha nahi tha aisa hoga. Socha hota to shayad kuch plan kiya hota." Naina answered in a dull voice. Preeti gently placed her hand on Naina's shoulder, and asked, "Tu sabko bohot yaad karti hai na?" Naina tried to blink back the tears that had began welling up in her eyes, "Bohot zyada. Kitni baar sochti hu ki ek mauka mil jaye Chachaji Chachiji se baat karne ka. Unhe apni baat samjhane ka. Unse maafi maangne ka. Lekin himmat nahi hoti."

"Par Naina.." Preeti began but was interrupted by Naina, "Chhod na ye sab. Tu bata, kaisa chal raha hai sab? Aur tum sab wo Mr Mehta ki party mein kaise? Tauji jaante hain unhe?"

"Arey bhool gayi! Wo Radhika Bhabhi ke tauji hain. Radhika Bhabhi unke parivar ki iklauti beti hai aur Paresh uncle ki laadli bhi, to unhone khud ghar aake kaha tha ki sabko ana hai unke bete ki birthday party mein." Preeti reminded. "Oh haan!" Naina muttered, "Bhabhi kaisi hain?" she asked, remembering the few but sweet memories she had with her sister-in-law. "Arey wo to first class hain. Mujhe kachoriyaan banana bhi unhone hi sikhaya hai, wo bhi Taiji se chhupake" Preeti happily informed. After some time, Sameer came there and teased Preeti that she should give some attention to her jijaji too, she's his adhi gharwali afterall. Preeti gave an I'm-loving-this-attention look but Naina burst her bubble saying, "Cricket match khatam ho gaya tabhi aye hain. Yaad rakhna Preeti, asal gharwali to cricket hai!" Swati broke into fits of laughter.

After a heavy and delicious meal in the afternoon, Munna and Swati headed back home, as Munna's mother was unwell and couldn't be left alone for long. Pandit had to look after his new shop, so he too left. Preeti asked Sameer and Naina to drop her till the park near their school, and from there she'd go to Jamuna aunty's maternal house with Jamuna aunty's daughter, as she was hired as the bride's beautician for her wedding tonight. They quickly got inside the car and drove off to the park.

"Jab tak Sejal aa nahi jati, tum log mere sath yahin ruko na." Preeti requested. "Lekin Jamuna aunty ki beti ka naam to Hetal hai na" Naina voiced, confused. "Sejal ho ya Hetal, tu ruk rahi hai na?" Preeti chided, and Naina agreed. After waiting for around fifteen more minutes, Preeti grinned, "Aa gayi Sejal!"

Naina looked at Preeti's 'Sejal' and whispered, "Arjun bhaiya!" Arjun went numb for a second, and then rushed to his sister and pulled her in a warm hug, "Kaisi hai tu?" Naina replied in a choked voice, "Main bilkul thik hu Bhaiya." Arjun pulled apart and caressed his 'still-little-for-him' sister's head. "Kitni badi ho gayi hai! Pata hai tujhe kitna yaad kiya maine" Naina didn't speak anything and just sobbed. Arjun wiped her tears and his eyes landed upon Sameer. Sameer smiled awkwardly at Arjun only to get ignorance in return.

Arjun looked at Preeti and suddenly remembered why he was here. "Ye dono tujhe kahan mile? Tu to parlour gayi thi, to mujhe yahan lene kyu bulaya? Wo bhi itni jaldi?" he enquired. "Parlour band hai aaj. Main to subah se Naina ke ghar pe thi. Isliye aapko yahan lene bulaya." Preeti confessed. Naina wondered why she had called Arjun here when she said Jamuna aunty's daughter would come to pick her. Preeti understood the confusion in her eyes and explained, "Jamuna aunty ke mayke mein koi shaadi nahi hai. Darasal main tujhe aur Arjun Bhaiya ko milwana chahti thi."

"Tu pagal hai kya! Ghar pe kisi ko pata chal gaya to!" Arjun panicked initially, but then thought otherwise, "Lekin jab tak meri behen yahan hai, tere sath main bhi usse milne aunga. Gharwalo se chhup ke hi sahi." he lovingly tapped Naina's cheek.

"Uski zarurat nahi padegi" Preeti voiced, shocking the siblings, "Hum Naina ko gharwalo se milwayenge." Naina and Arjun stared at her in utter disbelief. Preeti continued, "Bhaiya, aap to Naina ko samajhne ki koshish kijiye. Aap hi humari madad kar sakte hain use parivar mein wapas lane mein." Arjun rejected Preeti's pleading, "Main aisa nahi kar sakta." Preeti requested again, "Please bhaiya. Uska ghar wapas ana bohot zaruri hai. Wo kab tak gharwalo ka bharosa todne ka bojh apne sir liye jeetu rahegi!" But Arjun denied again. "Preeti, tu ye sab mat kar please. Maine tujhse kaha bhi tha, mujh mein himmat nahi hai" Naina sounded weak and defeated.

"Kab tak himmat nahi karogi Naina?" Sameer spoke up from behind. He didn't want to speak inbetween the cousins, but seeing his Naina becoming weak, he had to jump in. "Sameer, tum bhi..!" Naina said rhetorically. "Haan main bhi. Main jaanta tha ki Preeti ne Arjun ko bulaya hai. Infact, ye idea mera hi tha." Naina helplessly muttered again, "Mujhse nahi hoga" He turned her to face him and held her by her shoulders, "Kyu nahi hoga? Kab tak guilty feel karti rahogi? Kya tumhe lagta hai tumhara faisla galat tha?" Naina immediately shook her head in a no. Supporting her love could never be wrong. Sameer continued, "Jab kuch galat nahi kiya to kamzor kyu pad rahi ho? Naina, agar tumne hath aya mauka jaane diya to kahin na kahin sabko aisa lagega ki tum ye maanti ho ki tum galat thi. Hum galat the!"

Naina had wished all these years for just one chance. One chance to get her family back. Some hope and courage built up inside her everytime she thought of contacting them, but thinking of their reaction crushed it all. Their agony, accusations, cold behaviour was something she wasn't ready to face. But today, she had got that courage and hope back. She had her husband, her sister and maybe her brother too, by her side to support her. Today, she was ready. She turned back to look at Arjun with hope sparkling in her eyes. Arjun couldn't look into her eyes, he couldn't see the hope and longing in them.

"Ab to maan jao Arjun" Sameer came forward. Arjun sighed helplessly, "Tum log samajh kyu nahi rahe? Ise nahi aana chahiye wapas. Ghar pe tauji, Taiji, papa, sab aajtak kos rahe hain ise. Unke saamne aa gayi to kya kuch nahi sunayenge meri behen ko." he paused and looked at Sameer, "Tum to pyaar karte ho na Naina se. To ise mat bhejo us ghar mein wapas."

Arjun was really helpless and concerned about his sister. She had already spent 20 years of her life bearing the elders' taunts at house. And now when she was somehow free from all of it, he didn't want her come back and suffer again.

"Pyaar to tum bhi karte ho apni behen se. To meri tarah tum bhi uski himmat bano Arjun. Pyaar to Naina ki tarah tumne bhi kiya tha, lekin nibha nahi paye. Par Naina ne to nibhaya hai. To pyaar ki izzat rakhne ke liye hi humara saath de do." Sameer knew this would work. And it did. "Naina, kya tu sach mein ye kar payegi?" Arjun asked, cupping her face and Naina nodded determinedly. "Thik hai phir. Kal subah aa jaunga main tujhe lene."

Sameer and Preeti smiled happily and Naina hugged Arjun saying, "Thank you bhaiya" Preeti hugged both of them together and squealed, "Kal 9 baje tak taiyar rehna. Tere bhaiya ayenge tujhe pag-phere ke liye le jaane!"

Lovely update Anji and yes much awaited too!

I loved reading the Naina-Nikhil bond and interaction. That scence with Nikhil crying cause Naina as upset was so relatable! It brought back some precious memories of the time when my daughter was much younger and would burst into tears seeing me cry. And bhagwan bhala kare Swati ka ke naam Naresh nahi rakhne diya! I am not particularly fond of that name either 😆

I felt so sad for Preeti knowing how she has missed out on all these important moments of her sister's life. Due to the elder's zidd, the poor sisters have been forced to stay away from each other for so long too.

This line bu Preeti is very very intriguing - Shaadi ki umar hone mein aur shaadi hone mein bohot fark hota hai.

I am looking forward to the story behind that statement. Pandit is still single and settling down... so there is definitely some scope for PreeDit! 😉

Arjun sounds sensible even if not a very strong person and Radhika sound like a lovely person based on Preeti's comments about her.

Poor Samaina had to forgo their honeymoon because of the circumstances in which they got married... par koi nahi.. sath mein guzara har din aur raat HM se kum thoday hi raha hoga! 😳

Looking forward to the meeting with the rest of the family and soon please 😊
