Hello readers,

I know I have been delaying updates since long, and I'm extremely sorry for that. Trust me, I'm feeling ashamed of it, but I can't help it. I have personal reasons for the delay. And I know I should've put up a note informing you guys, but I didn't, and I'm sorry for that too.

But I assure you guys that I will be completing the story. I'd never discontinue it.

Currently, I have my semester exams from this Monday. So please do not expect any updates before August.

I don't know what to say! Umm, hello? Or sorry maybe. I'm just way too late this time. I would've posted this part yesterday in the morning, but couldn't due to some emergency. Anyways, beginning our September with a new chapter. Hope you like it!

Chapter 4

The morning was a rushed one. Having woken up at 7, Naina came out of the bathroom after her morning chores and bath, by 7:30, and set to wake up her husband, "Sameer! Utho aur jaldi se naha lo." When Sameer woke up rubbing his eyes, she tied her towel around her hair and headed downstairs after instructing him, "Khud bhi naha lo aur Nikhil ko bhi nehla do." Sameer stretched himself and then headed to the bathroom, lifting his half asleep son in his arms, who was in no mood for 'nhai nhai'.

Arjun arrived when they sat for breakfast. Naina asked him to join them for breakfast but he refused, saying he'd had aloo parathas just before coming. After finishing the poha in her plate, Naina sent Ramdhari to bring a bag lying on the corner of the bed in her room and she herself headed to the kitchen. She came out with a bowl of dahi cheeni and fed it to Sameer, wishing him good luck for his first day at Nanu's office. He smiled and kissed her forehead, and then crouched infront of his cranky son, "Oh ho! Itna gussa!" Naina stated, "Niku, iske baad papa se seedha kal mil paoge. Smile de do unko" and Nikhil finally threw his arms around Sameer's neck and pecked his cheek and Sameer left for work. Arjun picked up his nephew, while Naina carried her bag, and they left in Arjun's car.

"Chal na, Naina" Arjun prodded, bringing Naina out of her nostalgic trance. She didn't realise she had been staring at the building of Nirmal Jyoti Society. She closed her eyes and took a deep breathe to calm her nervousness, then came out of the car. Arjun gently placed a loving hand on her head, assuring her "main hoon tere sath" and she smiled. Then he carried the bag and led her upstairs.

Radhika and Preeti were sitting on the swing, apparently pealing peas, but their eyes repeatedly glanced at the door. Taking the last few bites of her breakfast, Bela Chachi asked Radhika, "Beta tu pakka sab kaam kar ke aayi hai na? Warna bhabhiji khamokha tujhpe chillayengi ki Pralay ka dabba taiyar karne ke bajay yahan baithi hai!" But Radhika assured her, "Chachiji, main Pralay bhaiya ka tiffin unki bag mein daal ke ayi hu. Aur Taiji to bukhar ki wajah se so rahi hain", she continued with a fallen face, "sab kaam bhi Manju kar rahi hai to main bore ho rahi thi. To socha Preeti ke sath koi film dekh lu. Sirf usi ke sath to manoranjan hota hai mera." Bela smiled and patted her cheek, "Theek hai, laga le philam" and headed to the kitchen for washing the dishes.

Pralay just stopped by the door to inform his bhabhi that he was leaving for school, but returned within a second and shouted, "Naina Didi aayi hain!" and he dashed towards Tauji's house. Radhika rushed to stop him but he had already yelled, "Mummy, Naina Didi aayi hain" making his mother wake up with a jerk, or actually an Oh Bai!

Forgetting everything about her fever, Taiji came running to Bela's house, "O Bai, ye karamjali yahan kya kar rahi hai!" Everyone's gaze shifted to her and Arjun held Naina's hand, "main laya hu Naina ko yahan" Bela and Taiji's eyes went wide with shock, and Taiji hollered, "Kirkit kumar, saalon pehle kirkit k sath sath buddhi bhi tyaag di, jo is bala ko ghar laya hai!" Radhika noticed two ladies passing by the corridor and quickly closed the door, "Taiji thoda dheere boliye, bahar sab ko sunayi de raha hai" Taiji yelled even louder, "sunte hain to sunne do.. Bhai apni besharam behen ko shaan se ghar laya hai, aur bhabhi kehti hai dheere bolo! Dhakke maarke nikalungi main ise" she stepped forward to grab Naina's hand but Arjun came in her way, shielding his sister from his aunt's wrath. "Preeti, tu Nikhil ko andar le ja" he handed Nikhil to Preeti, and then turned to Taiji, "Naina ko koi nahi nikalega. Ise main iske pagphere ke liye laya hu aur ye kal hi yahan se wapas jayegi." The authorative tone of Arjun did not go well with Taiji, "hukum to tune suna diya lekin mere ghar mein nahi rahegi ye. Aur jo kuch Anand babu ne iski wajah se saha hai, tujhe lagta hai Bela ise apne ghar mein ghusne degi" The wicked lady smirked as uncertainty flashed in the youngsters' eyes.

Arjun turned to his chachi, to try and coax her, but not wanting to listen to him, she moved towards her room. Radhika rushed after her. Before she could speak, Bela put up her hand to stop her, "tu kuch bhi bol beta, lekin main us ladki ko phirse nahi apna sakti jiski wajah se tere chachaji ki itni badnaami hui ho." Radhika softly asked, "aapko yaad hai, jab main vida hokar aayi thi tab chachaji ne mujhse kaha tha ki is ghar pe mera bhi utna hi haq hai jitna Naina, Preeti ya Pooja Didi ka hai. Aap Naina ko maaf nahi karna chahti to mat kijiye. Lekin kya chachaji ke diye us haq se main Naina ko yahan nahi rakh sakti" Her plea made Bela ponder upon it. Her husband had bestowed their daughter-in-law with a right on his house which was equal to that of their daughters. He actually treated bahu as beti. But how could she forgive the daughter who brought shame to their family, to her husband's upbringing. In both the cases, it was about her husband's respect. She was in a dilemma.

Chachiji wiped her tears and said coldly, "Beta, ye ghar tera bhi hai. Tu jise chahe jab chahe yahan la sakti hai. Lekin isse zyada mujhse koi ummeed mat rakhna." Radhika gave a small smile and mouthed a "thank you"

Arjun gently squeezed Naina's shoulder and assured her, "tu fikar mat kar, main kisi ko tujhe yahan se nikalne nahi dunga." She smiled to mask her nervousness. Just then Radhika came out and informed them of chachiji's decision. Taiji, shocked at Bela's decision, muttured, "Ne waah! Itna sab hone ke baad bhi is behaya ko ghar pe aane de rahi hai. Ab badnaami ko khud nyauta deke bula rahi hai, phir bhabhiji ke paas mat aana rote huye." With that, she stormed back to her house.

Naina's eyes roamed around the house that had been her home for 18 years. The walls, the furniture, the very smell of this house; how badly she'd missed all this! A lot had changed in this house; some changes seen and some felt, but it still felt homely.

Radhika took her in a warm hug, "kitne time baad milna hua hai tumse." Naina smiled at her sister-in-law, while Arjun checked the time and left saying he had to get ready for office, "tujhse shaam ko milunga" patting his sister's cheek. As they entered the sisters' room, the sight infront of them was adorable. Preeti had her hands covering her eyes and the lit masi-bhanja duo was playing hide and seek.

On seeing his mom come in, the Nikhil squealed and came out of hiding. Preeti lifted him in her arms, "pakda gaya!" and then turned to Naina, "bahar sab ne kya bola?" Naina informed her of Chachiji's decision and Preeti sighed, but then tried to cheer up her sister, "Mummy ke bolne se kuch nahi hota. Tu chhod wo sab, mujhe tujhse kitni baatein karni hain." She held Naina's hand and pulled her to sit on the bed. Radhika was amused at her excited nanad, "tum dono baatein karo, main bas thodi si der mein aati hu dopahar ke khaane ki taiyari kar ke." The sisters nodded.

Naina side-hugged Preeti and whispered, "is kamre ko maine kitna miss kiya hai!" She got up and moved around the room, admiring everything that had been a part of her life. A part of Naina Agarwal. Unlike the living room, this room hadn't changed. It was still the same as she'd left it that night. The house had become quite dull, just like the faces of the people living in it, but this room... it was the same bright and lively, exactly like her and Preeti. "Sab kuch ekdum waisa hai jaisa pehle tha.. Kuch nahi badla." Preeti grinned at her, "Behen! Main badalti to ye kamra badalta!" Naina chuckled and the sisters hugged again. Sandwiched between his mom and masi, Nikhil wriggled, making the sisters move away. "Jalkukda!" Preeti laughed.

Sameer stood infront of Nanu's office, looking at the big responsibility that awaited him. With nervous yet determined steps, he entered inside. The first one to greet him was a lady in her mid-twenties, introducing herself as Barkha Joshi, his secretary. He smiled greeting her and she then lead him to his cabin. The sense of responsibility doubled, as he sat himself on the owner's chair, Nanu's chair. Taking a deep breathe, he let his confidence take over everything else.

Sameer had a conversation with Barkha about the recent happenings in the company. Having been appointed just three months back, she told him whatever she knew. Pondering upon all the information Barkha had provided him with, he instructed her, "humare purane client Mr Mehta se appointment lo, mujhe professionally milna hai unse. Aur abhi mujhe factory jaana hai, afterall is sab ki jad wahin pe hai."

Radhika entered her room in a hurry, startling her husband, who was rummaging through his cupboard, probably searching for a shirt, for he was just wearing his vest. She stilled for a second, but then quickly averted her gaze and walked to her side of the cupboard, "Sorry. Wo main baad mein aa jati lekin abhi jaldi mein hoon." She hurriedly took out her purse from the cupboard, while Arjun had put on whichever shirt he laid hands on. "It's ok. Lekin tum jaldi mein kyu ho?" he enquired and she informed him that she was baking a cake for Naina, but didn't have cream for icing, and so, was sending Manju, her helper, to get some cream from the market. As she fished out some money from her purse, Arjun stopped her, "Ruko, main deta hu cream ke liye." Radhika gave a small smile and then again rushed with the money to the kitchen.

At around 1:30pm, Radhika took the cake to Bela's house and then called Naina and Preeti for lunch. As the sisters came out to the living room, not seeing Chachiji around, Naina asked, "Chachiji?" Radhika's excited smile faltered and she fumbled, "unhone kaha hai ki unhe bhook nahi hai, to baad mein khayengi." Naina understood she was lying, and swallowing the hurt, asked "accha aur bhaiya kahan hai?" Radhika replied, "hath-muh dho ke aa rahe hain. Tumhare liye to Papa se permission leke ghar aaye hain lunch ke liye." The three ladies smiled, and after washing their hands, were seated at the dining table, as Arjun too joined them.

They had decided to eat in one plate, so they shifted to the sofa as it would be convenient than dining table. Radhika, Arjun and Preeti had a small argument on who would feed Nikhil, and Radhika reasoned that both Preeti and Arjun had got their alone time with the munchkin, so it was her turn now. Naina supported her bhabhi and the other two had to agree.

Washing her hands, Naina told Preeti, "chachiji se kehde humara khana ho gaya hai, to wo bhi kha lein. Mere saamne to wo aana nahi chahti." Preeti eyed her seriously, "maine aur bhaiya-bhabhi ne isliye itni planning nahi ki thi ke tu bas aake kamre mein band hoke baithegi." Naina gloomily replied, "mujhe subah se kuch samajh nahi aa raha ke kya karu." Preeti held her shoulders, "mummy ke liye khaana leke ja." Naina looked at her incredulously and she continued, "unke saamne jayegi to wo kuch bolengi, tabhi to kuch baat hogi na. Aise kamre mein reh ke manayegi sabko!" Though Preeti chided at her, Naina knew she made sense.

Hearing two knocks on the door, Bela said, "aa jao." Naina entered with a plate of food. Bela was lying on the bed with her eyes closed and arm resting on her forehead. It pained Naina's heart to see her mother look so tired. Tired of everyone's taunts, tired of the insult, tired of her presence. Struggling to speak, she gulped a lump in her throat, and finally managed to utter, "Chachiji, khaana." Bela opened her eyes and looked at Naina for a fraction of second, and then, without sparing her another glance, moved out of the room, to the kitchen. Preparing herself another plate, she had her lunch in the kitchen itself.

Dejected, Naina kept the plate on the dining table and went to her room. When Preeti asked her of Bela's reaction, she answerd, "kuch boli hi nahi. Bolti bhi kyu, maine itna dil dukhaya hai unka. Mujhe nahi lagta chachiji maaf karengi mujhe." Preeti hugged her and swore to herself, "maaf to karna hoga."

Bela was washing the dishes and jumped back a little when she felt someone touch her feet. Looking down, she saw Nikhil bending near her feet. He looked up and smiled, showing whatever teeth he had. "Eena Dadi" he beamed at Bela. Not responding to the little boy, Bela continued with her chore. Frowning at the lack of response, Nikhil called again, "Eena Dadi" and hugged her legs. Looking around to make sure nobody saw her, Bela quickly washed her hands and wiped them with her pallu. Bending down to Nikhil's height, she asked him, "kise dhundh raha hai?" The kid just hugged her and tears rolled down her face. She wanted to caress his hair, hold her grandson close to her heart. But she controlled her emotions, and wiping her tears, called for Preeti. When Preeti came there, Bela stated coldly, "ise apne kamre mein hi rakh. Ghar bhar mein ghum raha hai." Preeti retorted, "to kya ho gaya, nanihal hai uska, ghum nahi sakta kya!" Bela spoke in anger, "zyada zubaan mat lada aur bacche ka dhyan rakh." Preeti picked up Nikhil and angrily left to her room. Nikhil stared back at Bela and unable to control her tears, she turned her back to him.

Preeti stormed in angrily and sat Nikhil on the bed, "tu na yahin ghum le, ye ghar ghumne layak hi nahi hai." Naina looked at her in confusion, but Nikhil tugged on her dupatta, "Mummy, Eena Dadi." Preeti asked cluelessly, "tune Eena Meena Deeka bhi sikhaya isko?" Naina explained, "nahi pagal. Eena Dadi to ye humare saamne wali Neena aunty ko bulata hai. Niku, kahan hai Eena Dadi?" Nikhil pointed in the direction of the kitchen, "bhaar. Eena Dadi." Naina wondered whom her son has misunderstood to be his Eena Dadi, and smiled on realising, "Dadi nahi nani hain wo teri. Bela Nani. Chachiji ko Neena aunty samajh raha hai." Preeti giggled at this new information about her now favourite person.

The already tensed atmosphere of the house worsened in the evening, when the men of the house were back from work. As soon as Tauji stepped inside his house, Taiji updated him with the happenings of the day. He had been enraged, but the cunning lawyer that he was, waited for Anand to come. Anand arrived in some 10-15 minutes along with Rakesh, and was surprised to see his brother and sister-in-law's angry faces. "Kya baat hai, bhaisahab? Aap itne gusse mein kyu lag rahe hain?" Pointing at Bela and Preeti, Tauji spoke, "puchho apne biwi-bacchon se." Before Bela could speak up, Taiji jumped in, "arey ye kya bolenge, main batati hu. Agarwal khandaan ka chirag ye Arjun, apni kulakshani behen ko ghar laya hai. Kehta hai, pagphera hai uska." Anand was shocked would be an understatement. The events from few years back played in his mind, his bag slipped from his hands as he held a chair for support.

Rakesh asked Arjun in disbelief, "ye bhabhiji kya bol rahi hai, Arjun! Dimaag kharab ho gaya hai tera!" Arjun argued, "isme galat kya hai, Papa? Apni behen ko apne ghar hi to laya hu." Rakesh hollered, "nahi hai wo teri behen. Saare rishte pichhe chhod ke bhaagi thi wo, bhool gaya?" Taiji came with her usual taunt, "Uske karmon ke saath-saath humare tyaag bhi bhool gaya, jo tere aur Rakesh babu ke liye kiye the? Oh Bai, dono baap-bete ko apne ghar mein rakha, tujhe bete ki tarah paala, ye din dekhne ke liye?" Arjun shot back, "us ghar pe apna haq samajh ke hi laya tha Naina ko. Mujhe lagta tha wo mera bhi ghar hai. Lekin aapne..." Tauji stood up, "Oh! To tumhare sasur ne ye dono ghar kharid liye, uska raub dikha rahe ho humein!" Radhika gasped at how Arjun's words were misinterpreted, "Tauji, inka wo matlab nahi..." but was made to shut up, "Bahu, tum is baat mein bich mein nahi bologi. Jao aur khaane ki taiyari karo." Taiji added, "aur nanad ke liye chhappan bhog banane mein mat lag jana." Radhika, with no other option left, had to go to Tauji's house.

Hearing Bela sniffling, Taiji said, "Ab kyu aansu baha rahi hai, Bela? Abhi to teri wo beti ayi hai na tujhe aur rulane. Ne waah, use rakhne ke liye phat se maan gayi, to ab ye natak kyu kar rahi hai? Bechare Anand babu, har koi bharosa tod raha hai unka." Bela immediately tried to clarify, "Kaisi baatein kar rahi hain, bhabhiji. Apne bacchon ki kasam kha ke kehti hu, maine kisi ka bharosa nahi toda. Jo kiya Preeti ke papa ki zubaan rakhne ke liye kiya. Inhone Radhika ko apni betiyon ke barabar haq diya hai is ghar pe.. kal ko koi ye na kahe ki wo to sirf kehne ki baat thi, Anand Agarwal apni baat se muqar gaye, isliye rehne diya Naina ko."
Inside their room, Naina and Preeti could hear everything the elders were saying, or rather yelling. Preeti gently rubbed her arm, "tu inki baaton pe dhyan mat de behen." Naina placed her hand on Preeti's, "inki baaton se farq bhi nahi padta, Preeti. Lekin chachaji to kuch bol hi nahi rahe. Mujhe tension ho rahi hai." Preeti assured her, "tu tension mat le, koi kuch bhi kahe, main aur bhaiya tujhe aaj to nahi jaane denge."

After a lot of discussion, Tauji declared, "dekho bhai Anand, us ladki ki zindagi ke faisle tum karte the, to aaj bhi tum hi karoge. Bahu ki baat ko bhul jao. Ye ghar tumhara hai, kise rakhna kise nahi tum tay karo." After a brief silence, Anand finally spoke up, "uske pati se kehna subah 9 baje se pehle use wapas le jaye." Tauji, Taiji and Rakesh were left shocked with the decision, but, however, did not argue further and just left the place. Anand too got up and dragged his feet to his room, "main sone ja raha hu, Bela. Tum khana kha lena." She did not have it in her to eat after all this, so she too retired to her room.

When Preeti asked Naina for dinner, she refused saying she wasn't hungry. Preeti understood why she didn't want to eat, but did not force her and just said, "accha Nikhil ko to khila de kuch." Naina nodded and Preeti went to get Nikhil's food from the kitchen. Nikhil sat beside Naina and tapped on her arm, "mummy, Pa?" Naina smiled ruffling his hair, "Pa to ghar pe hain. Ruko, phone karte hain Pa ko."

As Naina dialed Maheshwari house's landline number on the cordless, the memories of all the times she and Sameer talked through these phones flooded her mind, bringing a big smile on her face. The phone had just rang twice, and a voice came from the other side, "hello!" Naina's face-fell, "Ramdhari bhaiya, Sameer ko dijiye na." Ramdhari said, "abhi dete hain." Meanwhile, Preeti came with Nikhil's food. Naina started to feed Nikhil while still holding the cordless in one hand. Then, Sameer spoke from the other side, "haan, Naina. Bolo." Naina sulked, "office se aake phone kyu nahi kiya? Nikhil aur main naraz hain tumse." Nikhil nodded, supporting his mom. Sameer sighed, "sorry, wo main thoda thak gaya tha." Naina got serious, "main to mazak kar rahi thi, Sameer. Tum batao, office mein sab kaisa raha?" Sameer went quiet for a second, then replied, "thik tha sab. Baaki baatein kal karenge. Tum Nikhil ko phone do." Naina found this unusual, but however, brought the phone to Nikhil's ears. "Paa" he squealed. "Kya kar raha hai shaitaan?" Sameer questioned, to which the junior Sameer replied, "thaana" with his mouth full of food.

Suddenly remembering something, he said, "Pa, Eena Dadi." Naina face-palmed while Sameer quizically asked, "hain? Udhar kahan se ayi teri Neena Dadi?" Feeding him another morsel, Naina took the phone from her son, "arey, wo isne chachiji ko Neena aunty samajh liya. Dono hi saree pehen ke jooda banati hain to shayad.."

Sameer asked, "accha, wahan pe kya kya hua? Matlab, sab ne kya kaha tumse?" Naina sadly explained him how Tauji and Rakesh, though didn't talk to her directly, were very angry as expected. Taiji hadn't spared a chance to spew her venom, while Chachi tried to avoid her as much as possible. But what bothered her the most, was her Chacha's reaction, or rather the lack of it, "Chachaji ne kuch bola hi nahi, Sameer. Aise to main aake chali jaungi aur kuch badlega hi nahi." Sameer, though understood her feelings, but gave her hope, "thoda time to lagega na, Naina. Aur ab to hum yahin hai, aur mauke mil jayenge."

Sameer changed the topic, "to kal 8:30 baje tak aa jaunga main, taiyar rehna." Replying with a small "hmm" and wishing him goodnight, Naina ended the call.

Keeping the phone back on the table, Sameer looked at the plate of food along with a glass of water kept on that table. Ramdhari had brought for him to his room, after he said he was too tired to come for dinner. Not even touching the plate, he just gulped down the water and went to bed. The day was indeed tiring, but just not physically.

Guys, I'm posting the Wattpad link to this story in the first post. People's visits to the forum has decreased a lot, including mine, so I just want to make it a little convenient for my readers. You guys can follow this story on Wattpad too.

Lemme know your thoughts about this one.
Also, I want you guys to know that I have no experience of how things work in an office, and TV shows aren't much a reference in this case. So bhul-chuk maaf :-P
