Chapter 4 Feather
Sameer relaxed his fist and thrust the guy back with his hand that was still clutching onto his collar, giving him one last seething look of fury before turning on his heel to walk away.
Naina stood in his path mesmerized by his sight, there was confidence and pride in his step as he stalked closer, a gust of wind swept his hair back, she felt her heart beat as he neared and continued to stare at him while he angled slightly to avoid bumping into her and ran his hand through his soft hair drawing everyone's attention. He didn't seemed fazed by the fact that he had become the centre of focus in the schoolyard, boys were looking at him with awe and envy while girls were gushing over him.
No one more so than Naina who stood rooted in spot feeling almost as if her legs were going to give way. As everyone slowly made their way back to class Naina felt herself wandering with the flow, not paying any mind to the fact that her white plimsolls were being sullied as she unconsciously stepped through a murky, muddy puddle, her hands clasped together, a dreamy look on her face. She entered her classroom walking past the tables to the chalkboard, picking up the chalk and etching out the poem stuck in her head. Pandit, Munna and the gang were fooling around as usual but were stunned into silence as they watched her inscribe the poem upon the blackboard.
Waah. Acchi hai' exclaimed Pandit with admiration
Munna smirked leaning into Pandit, Kya acchi hai?' He replied raising his eyebrow toward Naina.
Bhai aaj ki kavita' Pandit replied still fixed upon the poem on the blackboard before turning his head to Munna with slight surprise. Tu kya samjha?' He asked meeting Munna's bemused look and then glancing at Naina tickled by Munna's insinuation. Abbe yaar..!' They cracked into hysterical laughter and began to playfully jostle one another to the desk while Naina sat in a trance unmindful to their banter of which she was the subject.
Naina, O Naina!'
Huh, kya hua?' Naina said pulled out of her reverie by Swatis voice
Yaar what's up, I've been calling your name, has something happened to you, batao?'
Nothing's happened?'
Then what have you written there?' She pointed to the blackboard. Pothi Padh Padh Kar Jag Mua, Pandit Bhayo Na Koye
Dhai Aakhar Prem Ke, Jo Padhe so Pandit Hoye?'
When did I write this?' Naina answered genuinely baffled.
Just now'. Naina glanced about her nervously growing conscious of the attention her writing was receiving and feeling her pulse rise, not remembering when she had written the poem.
Uh, this is Kabir's doha, what's in it. You won't understand.' Naina answered slightly ruffled that those neatly etched words on the board were of her own doing not just seconds before- how did she miss that?
Whatever, whoever speaks the language of love can understand Kabir's poem just like that... but how come you decided to write this one today?' Swati enquired. Naina felt her beating heart as she was taken back to the recent encounter with that dashing new boy...She looked at her friend and wracked her head for a befitting reply
Uh, well my dad's a librarian isn't it, so he used to bring such books home and read them to me, that's how..'. Naina didn't know why she had grown so flustered as if she would be discovered through the poem...and it wasn't as if she would be facing that guy again...
Can anyone tell me where you can find the answer to this problem?' Shanti teacher asked after writing a complex looking calculation on the board.
The guidebook' Answered Pandit confidently.
That's true, but in life there won't be an answer for every problem you face in a guidebook, for that you need to use your own mind, so in that respect it would be better for you all to use what you have at your disposal, your intelligence.' Shanti teacher concluded amiably while Munna obediently said Jee Madam' and Pandit was still flicking through the guidebook on the desk not fully comprehending the profundity of her words while Naina jotted down some notes trying to figure out the answer to the equation.
She was so absorbed in her work that she had not even glanced up as a new character made his entry into the classroom. His arrival caused a stir as the girls gawked at him and the boys beamed with glee particularly Munna and Pandit who were over the moon to find their cool friend from Nainital would be joining them for their classes too.
Class allow me to introduce you to our latest new student, Sameer Maheshwari.'
I have found the answer!' Naina cried and stood up.
Mere saawalon ka jawab do, do na
She had momentarily forgotten about him after their 1st encounter, consumed as she was in trying to find an answer. Yet here he was, of all the places he had turned up in her class. Naina was once more hypnotised in place, her hand still half raised in the air, feeling a surge of unexplainable bliss as she couldn't take her eyes off him; seeing his luscious hair dancing against his attractive features, and he was wearing an expression of calm confidence as he strode over to his desk to her left among Munna and Pandit and co.
Well done Naina, you were the first one to find the answer, you may sit down' Shanti teacher pronounced.
Whether there is a guidebook or not, there will always be Naina' jibed Pandit.
Hehe Pandit!' Munna called out. Sameer cracked a smile that warmed Naina inside in spite of Pandit's sarcasm.
The principal entered the classroom.
We have decided that the school is in dire need of a head monitor, the most principled, hardworking and disciplined student who has the schools best interests at heart and after giving it a lot of thought we would like to appoint the role to... Naina Agrawal'. Applause rang out across the classroom while Naina shone with gratitude at the Principal's surprising announcement, the day just kept on getting better. Only Sameer, Munna, Pandit and co. weren't clapping. Sameer had one arm rested against the back of his chair and watched Naina with a curious expression on his face.
She would be though, she's the special one afterall, teacher's favourite.' Munna whispered to Sameer while Sameer glanced back at her interestedly only managing to catch her in profile. Sensing his eyes on her Naina stole a glance behind her meeting him in the eye, and noting a slight smile curling at the corner of his mouth she looked away again while Munna continued
Don't know why they bother, she always gets every award.'
Naina was called up to the front and as the Principal began singing her praises Naina is a good example of not just tirelessly excelling at studies, but also in her dedicated honourable character and subsequently consistent upholding of the schools values'.
And what about the way she forces you to have a rakhi tied by her?' Pandit broke in, in hushed tone to his mates while Sameer smiled at his friend's flippant remark and looked at Naina again arms folded across his chest.
The badge was affixed to her shirt and she was made to declare an oath in the name of being a Head monitor. Sameer was tapping his fingers on his bag and observing her through narrowed eyes while his mates looked on with boredom. As she held out her hand before her and followed the dictation of the Principals words Sameer was watching her a smile creeping upon his face. He had not taken his eyes off her and when the oath had been said, applause broke through again. This time only Pandit took the pain of clapping half-heartedly among his friends while Sameer simply drummed his fingers on his satchel on the desk gazing at her still through narrowed eyes, one eyebrow quirked.
Chamchi no 1' Munna further informed Sameer.
Naina was so much used to being heaped on with praise about her good qualities that it did not shake her one bit, but today she was being praised in front of this new guy, Sameer that she felt jubilated. Moreover she had glimpsed him smiling so sweetly at her, his eyes sparkling with an avid interest that made her heart beat 19 to the dozen and she was thankful not to have noticed him eyeing her while swearing the oath or she would have faltered.
When Shanti teacher called Naina's name, Sameer peered at her as he was tucking his books inside his satchel before huddling together with his mates as they fell into chatter. Shanti teacher explained to Naina that one of her duties was to help the new students get acquainted with the schools many rules and regulations as well as the reading list and Naina nodded, inwardly jumping at that prospect where Sameer would be dependent on her knowledge of getting around the school. When Sameer was called he gave the teacher a charming smile and came forward casually. Naina was breathing fast as he advanced, the top quarter of his shirt was opened as a drifting breeze fluttered by and his hair whisked gently to its rhythm. He was attentive to Shanti teacher as she spoke with not so much as a glance in Naina's direction till Shanti teacher introduced Naina to him and he briefly glanced at her before looking back at the teacher. His eyes expressed more than he spoke as he listened intently and when Shanti teacher finished he smiled briefly at Naina and back at his teacher again. They both watched their teacher leave as she left them to it and when Naina turned to look up at him he looked upon her with the same radiance a smile playing on his lips before turning away to find his seat. Naina drifted blissfully to hers and penned down the list by habit before approaching him apprehensively at his desk. He was standing and chatting away with Munna when..
Sameer'
He turned to face her at the sound of her soft voice. As he did Naina felt weak at her knees, wisps of soft hair grazed his forehead as he gazed at her quite tenderly, his eyes glinting and a trace of a smile on his lips. She looked down timidly while he followed her gaze to the piece of paper she had in her hand and peered at her from the corner of his eyes before looking at the list. As he read the list he squinted and grew perplexed by their names. On hearing him speak for the first time and that too in addressing her she felt a flurry of elation even though he was merely reciting the names of books she'd written down for him.
What's this, some kind of Sanskrit or Shlok?' He said smoothly, waving the paper to her.
No, no it's the names of the recommended reading material.' Naina replied mildly humoured.
Uh...' Sameer bit down on his bottom lip and looked away in bafflement slapping the paper on his hand.
Jiv Vigyan matlab Biology, Rasayan Vigyan-
Ok, ok, I got it.' He cut in with his hands up in gesture and gave her a thumbs up. Thanks' he gave the paper one last look before tucking it away in his bag and hurriedly set off with his friends for break. Naina would have felt insulted if it had been anyone else to dismiss the reading list on the paper but this was Sameer and she was falling for every bit of his charms, even his insults...
Sameer had been called to go to the Principals office and Naina too was to accompany him. Sameers friends shook their head hoping that she wouldn't get him into trouble.
Now that she's been promoted from class chamchi to head monitor' Pandit whispered to Sameer as he stood up.
Naina followed him out of the classroom admiring the relaxed, confident gait with which he walked, a bounce in his step, and she found she had to quicken her pace to keep up with him. His face glowed with childlike innocence as he gazed up at the vaulted ceilings of the corridors and the surrounding architecture.
Dil deewana, bin sajna ke, mane na...
Pheete!' Naina called out of the blue stopping Sameer in his tracks. Sameer turned to her slowly.
What is pheete?' He asked innocently
Uh, lace'
Oh' Sameer said raising his eyebrows in understanding. As he set to knotting his shoelaces, a feather landed upon Naina's shoulder. She picked it up and placed it carefully upon her palm before blowing it away. It didn't travel too far as it fell to brush against Sameer's hand and came to rest there. He gazed at it fondly and lifted his hand up before blowing it away. Naina gazed at him affectionately watching him walk ahead again with an appealing swagger that she was growing to like by the second.
Yeh pagla hai, samjhan ne se samjhe na..
Sir may I enter?' Sameer said charmingly. He entered the office closely followed by Naina and paused in mild shock as he saw the two boys whom he had got into a fight with.
That's him, he's the one that did this and quite violently' quaked one boy pointing to his sorely bruised arm
No sir it's not all true' Sameer replied astonished with the exaggerated accusation.
We were playing our game quietly and then he came and tried to hit us just because the ball caught him a little' wailed the boy
Sir whatever they're saying isn't true.' Sameer repeated calmly in a deep tone. The other 2 boys started talking at once till the Principal halted them abruptly.
Listen Sameer, you're new to this school, you aren't aware of the consequences meted out here, I'll give you one last chance, tell me the truth otherwise I will cancel your admission.' The Principal stated. Sameer chewed on his lip and looked at the Principal with a wide eyed innocence.
The boys glanced at Naina. Sir we have proof of the incident, she's standing right here. Go on Naina, you saw how he was chasing us down and beating us. Tell him'
Sameer looked at Naina and Munna's words came ringing through his head 'teacher's favourite'. Naina glanced about her tensely. She felt the stares of all the boys on her especially Sameer's while she desperately tried to steel herself against the buckling pressure. What kind of a dilemma had she fallen into? Just when she thought the day was going well, this had to happen. On one hand was her responsibility she had to uphold and on the other...him.
