Chapter 6 Mil gaye humko joote mil gaye oh oh mil gaye!'

For the first time it was Sameer who had been desperately waiting for Naina to come to class that day although for reasons that was so far from Naina's when she would wait longingly for him each and every day. And however intentionally offensive he was being to her along with his friends, it did not bother her one bit because today it was the reverse, he was waiting for her, and the effect her arrival produced on him made her a little happy on the inside. As she stepped into the classroom he was watching her with clinched fists, his keen eyes searching her face for any sign of humiliation and acknowledging her condition with a sneer as his eyes wandered down to her feet again. Pandit leaned on Sameer and Naina cast her head to the side feeling growing discomfort from the stares Sameer and his gang were giving her.

Naye joote kahan gaye Naina ji?' Pandit taunted her sarcastically.

CHUHE ka gaye hoga' Munna said shrewdly while his friends sniggered along with Sameer.

Nahin nahin nahin, MANDIR mein chori honge'. They broke into wild laughter and Sameer smiled taking in Naina's reaction, who only blinked and moved to sit at her desk. They would not let this go of course and she would have to bear their immaturity for the rest of the day.

Chup ho jao, chup ho jao!' Swati cried as Naina found her seat while they settled down their laughter without keeping their scornful eyes off Naina.

Arre, aaj kisi ne... doha nahin likha'. Came Sameer's soothing voice as he regarded Naina with curiosity. Naina looked up at the blackboard and felt a little warmth kindle inside her at the sound of his voice. Offensive comments thrown at her with that voice would have not only been forgiven but closely cherished by Naina who in her present situation was unable to look past his flaws. Luckily it was his friends who had been making the disparaging remarks while Sameer had maintained his silence till now.

O, Naina ke bhai. Idhar aa.' Sameer ordered with the same soft voice, leaning his head to the side while Pandit rested his hand upon Sameer's shoulder as they all watched him dauntingly.

Abe jaldi aa' Pandit called before they all cackled as he approached them.

Ab tu yeh bata ke is situation mein sabse achha doha kaun sa hai' Sameer asked innocently while Pandit swung his arm over the boy's shoulder.

Arre bol de' pressured Pandit clapping him on the chest while Sameer smirked. As the boy recited the poem to them Sameers eyes brightened. He hopped off the desk, his hair falling in wisps against his face as he landed on the ground and capered casually past Naina to the front of the classroom. He picked up the chalk from the table and began to write the poem along the board in his scruffy writing that ended up in a lopsided line. As Naina read the words her face brightened with a smile. Sameer turned around and met her angelic face with a hardened expression, his lip curling into a subtle smile as he met her dreamy eyes.

Koi din hathi na. Koi din ghoda. Koi din paidal chalna ji.. arre oh doha ke expert zara bata na iska, matlab kya hai?' enquired Swati.

Naina remained silent while Sameer clapped his hands together from the chalk dust and flicked his head back before strutting back to his desk. As he swerved passed Naina he slowed down his step and looked down upon her patronisingly. She felt him staring her down but couldn't work up the courage to meet his look though she smiled inwardly under the impression that he had written the poem to reassure her and felt a little uplifted as she looked up at the board again. Sameer slowly returned to his seat while his friends applauded him. Just then the teacher arrived and everyone promptly kept themselves in check. Sameer's friends leapt off the table and stood with the whole class as she walked in.

Namaste sab. Baith jaye. If anyone has anything to ask about what I taught you yesterday then you may ask now.'

Yes Madam' Munna's hand was raised and he stood up when the teacher gave him permission to speak. Madam I want to tell you that 2 days back I wore sandals to class, so the head monitor had me punished for it.' Sameer pursed his lips and eyed Naina closely as his friend continued.

Aur aaj khud chappal pehen ke aayi hai, toh rules sabke liye barabar hai na Madam ji?' He presented his case very convincingly throwing Naina an accusatory look while Sameer snorted looking at her scornfully one arm casually resting on the back of his chair, the other stretched out onto the desk.

Sahi keh rahe hai Madam ji' came Pandits agreement and his mates nodded erupting into general assent of the unfair treatment.

Shanti, shanti.'

Kahan hai Shanti teacher?' Pandit joked to which the class exploded into laughter. Sameer grinned at his mates before shifting his focus back to Naina again.

Naina.' Naina stood up in apprehension of what the teacher was going to tell her. Sameer and Munna leaned forward eagerly on their desk to watch Naina taking the blow. Naina, you're the head monitor aren't you, so tell me what punishment will you deliver for this. Well? You are supposed to uphold the values of the school and if the very person who is representative of those values doesn't abide by them herself then how can this work?' Sameer tapped his fingers together and squinted at Naina clearly enjoying the scene, smiling at her while she received the lecture.

Dekhna galat baat hai yaar' cried Munna as his mates started with their loud disapprovals again.

Shanti, shanti!'

Kahan hai Shanti teacher?!!' Pandit cried out hysterically to the teacher's annoyance while his friends exploded with laughter and told him to sit down.

Naina go and hold your hands up outside the classroom so that everyone sees that the rules apply to all regardless of who they might be.' Sameer continued to eye her with pleasure as she stood quietly bearing the insult. She unpinned her badge from her dress and twiddled her hands fretfully before going to the front. Sameer followed her with attentive eyes, angling his chin up and looking down on her while drumming his fingers on his desk. He leaned in to his friends as they muttered away about her amongst themselves.

Naina unclasped her hands and raised her arms up above her head as instructed by the teacher. She stood there for a good 15mins and was furrowing her eyes from the mounting pain that shot up her arms. She was mortified as Sameer and his gang stepped out of the class, and uttered a silent prayer in hope that he would walk the other way but alas there was no end in sight to her humiliation today as he turned toward her stopping right before her. The irony was that her punishment and her pleasure were both interconnected through Sameer such that she found herself yielding to his abuses as much as she fell for his other more likeable traits. She tried to brace herself for the onslaught she would receive as her tormentors neared her and looked at them defiantly while feeling completely defenceless.

Dekho Sameer, she is chamchi no 1 even when she has to raise her arms she keeps them dead straight' Munna jested while they all sniggered.

Sameer looked at her with an odd expression on his face while Naina looked down at her feet to avoid his penetrating glare, she felt herself flush as she saw his feet take a step nearer to her and felt his shadow enclose them. She thought she would feel faint from the proximity as he closed in and it didn't help her feeling vulnerable already with both her arms held up in the air.

The teacher has called you back.' He said darkly towering over her.

Did you not hear her call you? Looks like Naina ji has lost her sense of hearing as well as her sense of touch.' Pandit added with a chuckle. Naina slowly dropped her arms and rubbed them weakly, her face creased with the excruciating soreness while Sameer eyed her heatedly.

Luckily the teacher had returned from the library at that point and questioned them all what they were doing outside. Sameer and his gang muttered quick apologies as they all turned back into the classroom in a single file Naina following suit till the bell rang announcing break.

Naina walked to her desk avoiding looking at Sameer who had a smile on his face as he packed his books into his bag stealing brief glances at her now and then, Pandit sat across the table opposite Sameer helping with his satchel while the rest of the gang stood up, watching Naina on the sly. She couldn't wait for the day to be over so that they would pick on someone else, as they always did. All the students were dispersing by then except Sameer and his gang who hung back a little listening into Naina and Swati's conversation. They exchanged amused looks with one another while Sameer cocked an eyebrow watching her from the corner of his eye as he finished packing his satchel.

Swati said consolingly Naina, kabhi kabhi hota hai aisa, aur tu yeh sab chod na, canteen mein chal mujhe bahut zor se bhoog lagi hai.' Munna looked at Swati with a foolish smile on his face.

Nahin, mujhe nahin khaana, tu chal, bhoog nahin hai' Naina said sullenly. Sameer shook his head smiling at her words.

Pandit smirked at her and quipped Haan, haan, class ke bahar kadi hawaa jo khaa li, pet to badi gaya hoga' He finished sarcastically while they burst into loud laughter and Munna high fived him. The trace of a smug smile faded from Sameer's face, his expression morphing into a look of contempt instead as he stood up and passed by Naina slowly and deliberately before leaving.

Arre chalo chalo khaana khate hai, hume todi hawaa khayi hai' Munna joked grinning at Naina as he passed.

Papa kehte hain bada naam kadega' Sang Sameer with his other friends.

Arre bhaiyon, jaldi jaldi cold drink aur garam garam samosa, aur bhai garma garam samosa jaisi na, koi cheez nahin' Munna and Pandit glided to their table hands full with their fizzy drinks and hot food.

Aur garam garam badle jaise bhi koi cheez nahin. Kyun Sameer?' Munna teased raising his eyebrows while Sameer smirked and kept quiet, twirling a cup in his hands feeling a sense of gratification from the sweet revenge...

Tu rasna peeyega' asked his friend

Main sirf strong cola pee ta hoon boss' Sameer said coolly clicking his finger to his mate Himmat.

Bhai mein toh rasna pee ta hoon, aur bolta bhi hoon us ad ladki ki tarah' Munna snickered. Sameers face lit up in remembrance

Arre wahi jis mein woh bacchi aisi bolti hai' Sameer demonstrated with the bottle, his face lit up like an angel, and he cocked his head to one side, a cheesy grin plastered to his face.

I love you Rasna!' he said in a loud babyish voice at which his friends burst out laughing begging him to mimic it again. Naina wandered into the canteen her tiffin in hand and halted as she saw Sameer sitting with the back of the chair facing the table, another one of his little quirks. She caught his attention as she walked in. A smile trailed on his slightly parted mouth.

...Kaate Nahi Katate Ye Din Ye Raat, Kehni Thi Tumse Jo Dil Ki Baat
Lo Aaj Main Kehta Hoon...
'

I love you Naina' Sameer said holding the bottle to her, his head cocked to one side, his hair blowing with the breeze. Naina felt light on her feet as if her knees were about to give way. Sameer turned to his friends and laughed with them but Naina wasn't fazed, the effect of his words on her however jokingly intended sent her into a spin. For it was the first time she heard him say those words, imagining her name instead of Rasna. Naina drifted past Sameer. A fragrance was sweetening the air. Sameer paused momentarily far away from his friends chatter and slowly turned his head to the side while she watched him from behind as she walked away...

Sameer and his gang's voices filled the canteen with their nonsense chatter and raucous outbursts of laughter. With Sameer in their gang they had now earned the reputation of being the popular lot on top of their infamous mischief-making. This time they had gotten into trouble for not paying back the money owed for their school dinner.

Pandit tu ne paise nahin diye?' Munna pretended while Pandit bit his tongue in guilt.

Arre mujhe laga tu dega' Pandit affected playing along and looking shifty eyed while about to take a sip of his coke.

Re tu doge to main doonge kyun nahin yaar tujhe dene chahiye ta na yaar!' Munna said hurriedly.

Arre toh tu kyun nahin de sakhti?!' Pandit cried hysterically, Munna replied back equally hysterical till they were both spluttering out unintelligible words to one another until Sameer cut short their high-pitch shrieking.

Guys, guys, relax...' he said in his calm suave voice and pulled out a note and handed it to the dinner lady with a charming smile. From across the canteen Naina noted his generosity and her esteem of him became even higher as he stood selflessly by his friends without asking for anything in return.

Yeh kya koi naya teacher hai? Kal bhi maine dekha ta' Sameer asked as Naina's father came into the canteen.

Hah, yeh librarian hai, jab kabhi library jaoge toh bata chalega na, haha' Munna and the gang cackled in amusement while Sameer pouted.

Arre par yeh librarian babu teacher ke chamchi ke paas kyun hai?' Sameer indicated to Naina who appeared to be in a lengthy conversation with the teacher.

Chamchi ke woh param puja pitaji hai, shreeman Rakesh sir hai'

Oh...toh yeh chamchi ke papa hai..' Sameer uttered in sudden realisation. Then he was struck by another moment of dawning apprehension Oh no!...kal unhone mujhe scooter ke paas dekh liya ta... Oh no agar woh scooter se..joote nikhlegi toh...' he added with mounting panic explaining to his friends how he had hidden Naina's shoes in the teacher's scooter.

Ek kaam karta hoon, let me go and get rid of her shoes, till then you lot try and keep him distracted, thik hai?' He finished patting Pandit on the chest, and was about to veer off but skidded back to his friends who were all bursting into panic of how to cause a distraction. Suno, suno, suno, kisi ko Hanuman chalisa aati hai?' Sameer said hastily flicking his long hair from his face. Pandit volunteered and sat cross legged on top of the desk launching into the prayer, an urgency in his tone while Munna awaited for the opportune moment to distract Rakesh sir and Sameer sped off to do the necessary.

Rakesh sir, Rakesh sir' Munna called stopping before Naina's father

Kya hua?' Rakesh sir replied with an impatient look on him

Sir kya woh sports week magazine aye sir?' Munna asked sheepishly

Kyun, yahan laake doon?' he answered sarcastically. Library mein aake ko check karoon.'

Sir..sir...sorry sir woh mere.. paidon mein chot lagi hai to hum seede nahin chal sakte, agar ayi hai to hum upar aake check kar lete hai sir.'

Pair mein chot lagi hai to jaake doctor ko dikhao.'

Accha sir- Munna said aiming to block his path

Bolo na doctor ko dikhao.' He said sternly

Sir.. kaun si doctor ke paas'

Bewakoof ladke' he said and walked off

SSir, sir, sir..kaun si doctor sir!' Munna called out hopelessly and ran back to his friends. Yaaron Sameer's done.'

dono javani ki masti me chur

tera qusur na mera qusur

Sameer darted through the hallway hoping his friends had held Naina's dad back while he tried to find a place to throw her shoes away. He stumbled on the marble floor and tripped up throwing the shoes in the air and landed badly on his back. The shoes were mid-air but he managed to catch both in time before they fell to the floor.

na tune signal dekha, na maine signal dekha

accident ho gaya, rabba rabba

Naina materialised into Sameer's vision and looked down upon him. Sameer gazed up at her gawkily flashing her a guilty smile as if he had been caught red-handed but the odd smile on her face told him she hadn't quite comprehended the situation as such. She was thinking to herself how cute and childlike he looked from below though that illusion vanished as he stood up soaring over her in height. As he lifted himself to his feet with her shoes intact and looked at her with innocent and beseeching eyes, he was hoping she hadn't caught on to the fact that he'd stolen her shoes. Naina continued to drink in his angelic expression, the sweet subtle smile manifesting on his lips while his hair flowed about his handsome face.

Hi' he said cheesily, waving her shoes in his hand whilst his other hand was in his pocket. He sensed her delight and followed her with his eyes to where her eyes travelled sighing with her as she noticed her shoes in his hand.

Yeh.. yeh toh mere joote hai na?' Naina said expectantly

Hh..haan, tumhare to hai...naye joote, hai na?' Sameer replied beaming at her.

Tumne kahan mile?' Naina enquired looking up at him innocently

Sameer wracked his head to conjure an logical explanation for it and chewed his lip Hmm, uhh, mujhe?...Bahaar, jaadiyon mein, pade hote, maine socha, tumhe de doon.' He said rapidly.

Sachi mere liye?' Naina said her face lit up

Nahin toh kya usse main pehenu ga?' Sameer answered leaning in a bit. Waise joote hai ya kati patang? Do din mein ek baar bitiya, aur do baar, chori bhi hogeye' He added charmingly gesturing with his hands and looked at the shoes again. He started to play with the laces on her shoe before untying them, which Naina found quite provoking.

Do baar?' Naina asked amused

Sameer paused glancing sideways before looking back at her; Pehli baar dukhan pe, aur doosri baad kal, hai na?' he said expressively making gestures and nodding to her.

Tume sab yaad hai?' Naina asked fondly

Toh kya bhool jana chahiya' Sameer answered endearingly

Naina blinked, Huh...nahin, matlab main kehrehain ti ki-

Ok, ok, yeh lo, tumhare naye joote tume mubaarak ho, bye!' Sameer finished and spun on his heel heading the opposite way grinning to himself as he walked off down the hallway.

Naina watched him walk away from her while holding her shoes close to her chest. These shoes remain with her to date, one amongst her list of sentimental gifts Sameer had indirectly given her.
