Chapter 3- Crash

'Oh my goodness!! Rat!'

'Rat? What Rat?' Swati jumped at the sound of Naina's voice who began blaming her for stealing her beloved home-made paratha.

'I swear on Madhuri Dixit I never even touched the paratha'

'So then... who was it that stole my paratha..'

Badal yun garajta hai, darr kuch aisa lagta hai' chimed a group of boys from the other end of the canteen.

Naina glanced over in their direction.

'Tell me how your audition went yaar?'

Naina looked back at her friend momentarily distracted.

'Huh...oh...he said everything was ok, but I need to prepare a bit more, understand the meaning behind every word, to feel the essence of them, something more than dry words on paper, coming from the heart...but how can I do that..' She pondered, an easy thing to say, a harder task to execute.

'Wah Sameer wah! Singing a line like that of Sunny Deol with the face like that of Salman Khan..badi mast hai!' Sameer smirked at Munna's compliment, it was no secret that he was an exceptionally good looking guy and he was used to all the attention that came his way.

Naina peered over at the group again as they drew attention to themselves while Swati left to buy more food.

Yeh toofani, sham, yeh mastani sham, aag barasti hai sawan mein pani ka hai naam'

One amongst the groups' voices travelled to her ears Naina found her curiosity piqued. She guessed that rather hypnotic voice belonged to the mysterious guy in a black polo who had his back turned to her as the other boys were surrounding him. She wanted to go closer for a better listen and without thinking she walked over, tilting her head and straining to hear him amid the clamour of clapping and the other male voices that sung along with his. She felt a tranquil kind of pleasure produced from that clear, deep but sweet voice that grew louder as she approached them. The guy was turning his head when Swati cut in front of her.

'Come on Naina, we are going to be late for class' Swati said pulling her away.

'Wait Swati...aag barasti hai sawan mein pani ka hai naam. What does that mean?'

'How do I know? Are you still engrossed with what Lochan sir said to you?'

'Of course! How will I make sense of the meaning, understand the essence of words if I do not think and ask questions about them?' Naina said quizzically.

'You make sense of the meaning, but maaf kar, insaaf kar, lets go to class already!'

As Naina lugged behind Swati, she glanced behind her again to the group. A strange sense of bliss washed over her.

Oh ho, la la la la la la la la laa
hm hm hmm hmm, oh ho ho ho

'Wait I forgot my tiffin in the canteen, you go I'll follow ok?' Swati nodded as Naina rushed back into the canteen to fetch her empty tiffin.

Dil deewana bin sajna ke Mane na...

She skidded past some boys in a flash, stopping before her table to pick up her tiffin, and narrowly missed colliding against someone. He spun on his heels to avoid clashing with her and faced her frowning as she flitted past him absent-mindedly while he had to grab hold of the nearby chair to stop himself from tripping and almost cursed at her clumsiness.

Yeh Pagla hai Samjhane se Samjhe na...

He looked at her in irritation, her back to him, and brushed his hand through his hair; Pagal ladki, he thought raising both his hands up in annoyance and waving her off before turning to leave.

Naina paused before turning to look behind her in both directions. She was sure she was being watched, and for some reason she shuddered, feeling her hairs stand on end, the same sort of feeling conjured from listening to a piece of beautiful music. She couldn't explain it but there was a sweetness that filled the air today and she was feeling every bit of it.

Shanti teacher had just left the class and there was an outbreak of cheers from the class as clusters of girl and boy groups took to doing things that had nothing to do with studying. Only Naina and another fellow student remained seated with their books.

'Come on guys lets find out the score!' Munna cried rubbing his hands together as he extracted his handheld Walkman/radio gadget that was hiding from under the table.

'Pandit, did you bring anything to eat? I'm feeling peckish' asked one of the others.

'Nahin yaar, today I'm fasting for Karva Chaudh' Pandit jested straight-facedly while his mates cracked up with laughter.

'Arre yaar, the signal is poor, lets stand up'. As they did they spotted Sanjay making his way to Naina and chatting to her about sharing her book. They halted in surprise and looked at him in admiration. For those were the days when girls and boys stuck to their own, any kind of intermingling was construed as attempt to flirt even when the motive was plainly for educational purposes like Sanjay's. Though that wasn't true either as Naina found out later.

'I feel something good is going to happen to you today' Swati said sweetly. Naina smiled at her friend who was forever the dreamer filled with romantic ideas from the movies.

'Really...maybe Lochan sir will pick me for Juliets role?'

'Who knows? It could also be that a Romeo in this school is waiting to come for you'.

Naina shook her head smiling at that thought, she doubted that very much going from the current selection of fools she was so used to seeing day in day out. Moreover she was here to study unlike some of the other girls she knew. As they left the classroom and walked through the corridors Naina chatted away to Swati unconsciously grazing against someone's arm while Swati stopped slack-jawed watching that person go past them before turning a corner.

Swati stopped Naina. 'Hai la. Such a handsome guy, exactly like Salman Khan, you should've have seen him yaar.'

Naina tutted, 'That may be, I don't want to see, let's go pagli.' She was quick to dismiss Swati's obsessions but she'd never have thought that the guy she had just brushed past would soon become her obsession, intrinsically linked to her fate.

'Today something has happened in this class that has never happened before in this history of Praghati Vidya ka Mandir. Sanjay Tebriwal stand up.'

The principal's announcement was met with gasps of animated surprise from the group of boys to Naina's right. The principal questioned him about a letter he had held out for him.

The love letter had been the latest cause for the ruckus amongst her family which had reached the schools knowledge too and now they were standing with her at the front of the class. It was just her luck. Naina felt ashamed about this unnecessary act of stupidity from her classmate. She would now become the laughing stock of her class because of it.

'Bhai, one is afraid to tie even a rakhi on Naina. And this banda has written a love letter to her?!' Pandit whispered.

After addressing Sanjay and pointing out where he had gone wrong, the Principal spoke to the class. 'Listen all of you, this kind of shameful act won't be tolerated here.' He said sternly.

'All because of this Naina' Munna said spitefully while Pandit nodded in agreement. Not that they had a chance with the girls here but they liked to think the option was open to them if it did arise but Naina and her family had interfered and all the students would receive the brunt of it too. When it was suggested in all solemnity and seriousness from Naina's Uncle that in order for Sanjays inappropriate behaviour via the love letter to be completely ousted, Naina has to tie a rakhi on him and he has to accept her as a sister, the class erupted into cackles of laughter while Naina held a stoic expression on her throughout the torture.

'Ab bol, aaj se Naina teri behen hui' came the severe voice of Naina's aunt.

'Aaj se Naina teri...uh, matlab meri behen hai.' Sanjay said with resignation.

Sanjay. Hey Sanjay' Pandit pestered him and leapt on his desk while the others stood near.

'This Pandit salutes you bhai, I had thought you were only focussed on studying, but seeing the bravery you displayed when you wrote that letter to Naina! Kya baat hai. Makes me want to bow my head down to you in reverence bhai! Truly!' Pandit bowed down while a dejected Sanjay continued to look straight ahead.

'Tell us one thing though, granted you wrote a letter, but to that Naina?! Bhai what do you see in her?' Munna asked fixedly before howling with laughter while the rest joined him. 'Look how he's blushing haha!'

Naina entered the class and headed straight for the chalkboard. The boys stopped as she did and walked up to her, Munna chewed on a smoke and crunched it in his hand and one by one they all held their hand out to her.

'Today we solemly swear that Naina is our sister, and in this world however many girls go by the name of Naina will also be considered our sister too.' They burst out laughing after their mini charade was over.

'Naina we've all brought rakhis with us, just don't call your family members over.' Pandit added mockingly as they fell into fits of laughter once more.

Naina reconciled herself to their cheap jokes as she turned round to face them knowing they were looking for a reaction so she simply kept quiet and ignored them. They made a big fuss making a gap for her to pass through as they lined up on either side.

'Chalo, let's make way for Didi' quipped Pandit, 'Didi jaaye didi' Munna added along with the others affecting respect for her as she made the long walk of shame to get to her table feeling the humiliation with each step she took. After she'd passed they broke into peals of laughter and gave high fives to one another.

Meanwhile Sameer strolled across the grounds a pleasant smile on his face, ready to embark on his new life in this new school. The wind whipped through his hair and his shirt that was open buttoned near the top flapped in the breeze. He whistled to the tune of 'Aaya mausam dosti ka' and caught the attention of a group of boys at the basketball court.

'Check out his attitude, he's newly admitted and the way he is walking as if he is the trustee.' The guy squarely aimed the basketball at him but Sameer ducked as another guy caught it from the other side.

'These money-rich city boys have so much ego because they are spoilt rotten' slurred the guy before chucking the basketball at him, but Sameer's reflexes were sharp. He caught the ball and slowly removed it before him revealing his boyish looks now contorted with slight threat. He advanced to the gang bouncing the ball several times on the ground.

'Forget the chit chat, and learn how to play.' Sameer said simply twirling the ball round his finger and then catching it mid-air. 'Understood.'

Sameer single handedly took on the whole team and aimed to make a shoot for the hoop. Three kinds of boys existed in the school, the sporty ones, the studious ones and the ones who desired to be either of these. Sameer fell into the former, he loved sports and was great at it, he had a sense of adventure that could not be tied down by books, and playing games especially cricket was his identity. He didn't aspire to be like Kapil Dev or anything like that, he simply enjoyed the freedom it afforded him and the competitive spirit inside him needed it. Just as he was close to making the shot, he felt a sharp shove in his ribs and fell to the ground using his hands to cushion his fall.

'Hey ameerzaade, looks like you never drank your mother's milk'. Sameer swivelled his head and rose quickly. He looked at the guy dangerously his soft hair ruffling upon his face before breaking into a run toward him. The guy jolted away in shock as Sameer picked up his speed and chased him. His hair waving as he ran in hot pursuit.

Till he abruptly halted in his tracks seeing a girl walking opposite him with downcast eyes seeming to be preoccupied with something, she wasn't looking up, but the speed at which he was running caused him to skid till he came colliding with her.

He raised his hands in surprise while she looked up and did the same and he could feel her fingers graze against his, and as they wheeled around together on their heels now inches of one another still spinning from the impact of their clash.

Their eyes locked into one another from such a close proximity, even without touching the intensity from seeing into the other's eyes was overwhelming. As Naina gazed into this stranger's eyes time ceased to exist leaving only this newfound feeling. She saw a sparkle in his eyes and a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth as his eyes travelled down to her parted lips and then back to her eyes.

Oh ho, la la la la la la la la laa

hm hm hmm hmm, oh ho ho ho

Slowly they parted as he looked away and spun in the other direction, his hair brushing against his face, he glanced back at her, then away again before continuing where he left off prior to encountering her.

Dil deewana bin sajna ke Mane na

Naina stood transfixed to the spot her hands still raised slowly bringing them down. Her heart thudded, alerting her of her own existence which she had forgotten within that fleeting moment. It was over within seconds but it would remain with Naina for a lifetime. She dazedly followed him outside watching him yank back the guy and punch him in the face with a clenched fist.

Yeh Pagla hai Samjhane se Samjhe na...

Who was this mysterious boy who within seconds had seized all her senses. This boy with the long windswept hair caressing his forehead as it blew gently to and fro, his eyes ablaze with passion that looked out from his beautiful face. And Naina knew, knew now why she was feeling different. That fatal moment marked a new beginning for her. For a momentary crash with a stranger is not something she could imagine would change her life. But it did.

Loved the read, its nostalgia within nostalgia- ie, revisiting the earlier episodes when things were just starting out between Sameer and Naina. Awaiting next chapter!
