@AraBearXo:
People have very limited idea about Indian webseries genre and the platforms that producing those shows. Webseries is the new trend to showcase talent but its economic aspects are still very murky at best.
Giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime are yet to break even in India and desi content provider like ALTBalaji incurring heavy losses till date. Last year BT incurred 25 crore rupees loss from ALT alone.
Now, let's talk the budget and "box office" result/revenue of a typical webseries. It depends on platforms. Giants like Netflix, Amazon give 10-12 crores for 3-4 months long project while Alt can afford 2-3 crores at most for the same project. Sacred Games is the most expensive and most successful webseries made in India. It's per season budget is around 25 crores and revenue is around 40 crores (most of the revenue generated from international audience). While ALT's most expensive and most successful webseries was Bose: Dead or Alive featurering Raj Kumar Rao , it's budget was around 4 crores and its recovery of cost was around 3 crores, still a loss of 1 crore net.
A large portion of netizens in India don't want to pay platforms to watch. They just download episodes from torrent sites. Plus, the webseries audience is different from TV audience. DT is a big name for TV but Surveen Chawla is more well known in webseries arena but Surveen-Rajeev webseries Haq Se from ALT garnered average response. Therefore, Ekta knowing the limitations of ALT and the reach of her show , won't expect much. A hit CLACM would not even translate into sustainence of a TV show for more than a month. Take YHM for example, it's monthly budget even at this odd slot is well above 5 crores per month and the revenue it generates for SP through sponsorships and advertisement is well above 10 crores per months. Yes, daily soaps are usually crap and web shows are slick and fun. But typical web shows pay peanuts to stars and earn peanuts compared to daily soaps.
