If you observe Mani Ratnam's stories always depict complex relationships and the way to deal them..
Yet beautiful and romantic... especially Mouna ragam... awww..
This could have been one if properly handled..

To me Ishita looked more beautiful and like a COMPLETE woman on VaraLaxmi vratham day...

As you said Less is more for Raman.. Going by ishita's charcter... this scene was not needed..
