Yep that night his actions were dictated by his past too and he was channeling his hurt and anger at being burnt again, at being hurt again, he thought this time he had been more careful, more stringent in his actions but still he made a mistake and gave his heart away to a woman who was breaking it. Now that he knows better he is thinking about what his past is doing again and again to him, her and them, but mostly he sees how for no fault of hers she is being dragged into all of this and this time though once again he is viewing things through the lens of his past he isnt being blinded by anger, jealousy or insecurity, rather he is being a man in love - not a man who wants to possess but a man who wants to give, who wants to love and hence he is seeing the impact of his past on her.
This the same man who once said to his daughter - for your sake she would even tolerate my anger, who took this woman for granted and made her apologize to his son for no fault of hers is thinking - I should let her go, set her free.
She deserves better, she deserves more than what I have to offer.
Like you said he got nothing ever from a woman he once loved, but wanted to hold onto her, cause he thought that it was enough that he loves her, he wanted a stable home for his children even if it meant he had a loveless life...now this woman walks in his life and keeps on giving to him - his daughter, peace of mind, a happy family, the kind of home he loves to return to at night and in return she always got insults, trials and troubles that never ceased to exist.
Now he sees that for all the material worth in this world that he can offer to her, nothing can amount to what she has given him or the problems his past caused to her. The scales were tipped in her favor from his POV and now he wants her to not compromise anymore and therein lies the beauty of this act in setting her free - he would free himself of his past, for when she would chose him with everything and not despite of those, he would have found and gained love that is unconditional.
