Yes, for Deepavali, every one takes oil bath, wear new clothes, give sweets and savory snacks to family and friends and have a good meal with family and friends.

CVs used their creative licence ...wife never sits on husband's lap in any festival. During the wedding ceremony, almost a century ago, brides were teenagers so they sat in their father's lap at the time of kanyadhaan and groom tying mangalsutra. These days, the bride sits in front of father, bas.

CVs have got some rituals right and the rest they make up as they go along. 😆 They could always visit the forum and hear from Iyers here at least about how the general protocol of festivals and pooja are done.😃

Every diwali it's the same ritual. First Diwali after wedding the groom (and some times his family) go to bride's house. It's called Thalai Diwali. Sassuma gives bride a piece of jewelry for Diwali if they are inclined to and can afford.
