I am a tamilian and I too found the amma's Tamil pronunciation not proper. Rather than mocking, I feel it is more of incorrect portrayal and her accented Hindi is very stereotypical. They could have toned it down. But then again, in daily soaps, all cultures tend to get stereotyped and some amount of incorrect portrayal does exist. In this show, atleast the OTT accent seems to be restricted only to the amma's character and Ishita, her akka, her younger sister, her jiju, etc. are not OTT.

Not just tamil culture but many cultures have been portrayed in a comic way which is far from reality for ages in indian cinema (also internationally). Unfortunately racial humor tends to be most appealing to audiences of comedy and many cultures like chinese, black, and in india punjabis, tamils, gujratis have been used as part of this humor.

But its just for the purpose for entertainment and us complaining about it will not stop it. So it's better to switch the channel and watch something that doesn't offend us. 😳

I actually think it is useful to complain, otherwise no one hears your opinions.

Haha chill MR/Ms...what do you mean by if you cant respect tamil culture ? ' Who said I do not respect Tamil culture. you want to create issues after issues it seems. I didnt say anything which insults tamil culture generally. If you got insulted with my example of that song...that's your problem ... but that song is not my production or hypothetical mockery...LOL... like most of the replies on this topic most of the people seem to agree that its not mockery at all like you think...so sadly its a waste of time here if you try to think or spread negativity about such a beautiful show and actors...peace out

I am a Tamil Brahmin and disagree with the way the iyers are portrayed in the show. Actually Iyer moms are pretty classy and well spoken. Even the housewives speak excellent english, my mom is 70 and has been educated till the 10th standard. She communicates as well as anyone with a college degree, her english language skills are flawless and behaviour is not OTT like Ishitas mom in the show.
Ekta should have done proper research and portrayed the community a little sensitively. It should have been really classy. Tamilians are generally very low key people. The young Iyer women are all well educated and independent.

Brahmins do not say "vanakkam". The elders say "Namaskaram" and the youngsters generally go by saying "Hello Mama " or "Hello Mami".

Amen!
But then, I think its more so ignorance than the intent to mock.
Anycase Personally, Ive put this in the back burner for now. There are several other positives to the show that am willing to not pay too much attention to this issue.

Ekta could have gotten Sudha Chandran to enact the mom. Not that Neena Kulkarni is not good. Having Sudha would have imparted an authentic flavor to the character of Ishita's mom. Anyways it is what it is. Nevertheless I think this is a contemporary story by Star Plus standards and a great way to capture the 11 p.m. slot.

Ishita mom is given lots of screen space and there's time instead of looking funny she's like a disturbance. why I feel she puts lots of efforts.

Now that u mention it, yes Ekta could've picked someone that is a Tam Brahm
Its a bit hard for me to envision Sudha Chandran as a genuine over zealous mom as opposed to a vamp...😆😆😆😆
but yes! the language/accent issue would've been resolved in that case.

Also, I may be wrong, but mostly from whatever shows or movies I have watched, they usually show the gujuratis or the punjabis in a comic way and the tamilians as the serious types.
I agree on the mom though, she does go ott sometimes.

The mother i understand is not natural at all...it.is i think poor acting...but ishita ..i may disagree..i am from delhi and few of my tamil friend who have been born and brought up in delhi will speak like ishita... on the looks part ...i am not sure why you say she does not look like tamil..i have seen iyer girls like her..hey was not hema malini tamil...a younger hemaji will look like ishita
the father is shown as a sober decent man
