PART 5
Alex hated this part of the day most. Going home. She did not want to go to face her so-called step-mother. She hoped that David would be home so she wouldn't have to make conversation with her⦠it was already 8:30 and she had tried to while away as much time as possible playing tennis at Kevin's. She pushed the door open and walked into the hall, hoping to get to her room quickly.
"Hey David!" she said brightly, stopping as she spotted her brother watching TV.
"Hey Alexβ¦ somebody called for youβ¦ Pam wrote the number down you can ask herβ¦"
"Who was it?" she asked coldly at the mention of Pam.
"I don't knowβ¦ you can ask Pamβ¦" he said switching channels. Alex exhaled slowly as she walked into the kitchen where she knew Pam was.
"Hey⦠who called for me?" she asked in a low voice.
"Some guy called Scott Truscott. I have his number down if you want to call him backβ¦" she said.
"We are having salad, again?" she complained as she caught sight of what Pam was making.
"Yesβ¦" she sighed sounding tired, "I couldn't get anything ready in such a short timeβ¦"
"Yea you spend all your time at your office and what do you expectβ¦" she muttered.
"I heard that!" said Pam looking at Alex crossly. She was tired and in no mood to be nice.
"Well I said it aloud!" shot back Alex scowling.
"What is your problem?" asked Pam indignantly, setting her cloth down and looking at Alex angrily.
"My problem? You want to know my problem? I'll tell you my problem. My problem is that I have been eating salad for 3 days. My problem is that I am an orphan. My problem is that you think you can replace my mother when all you want is my father's money. My problem is that-" here Alex couldn't go on for she was chocking. She so badly didn't want to cry in front of Pam.
"You want to talk problems? Let's talk problems young lady. I have problems too. My problem is that I lost my husband 8 months ago and now I have to deal with his stubborn and badly behaved daughter!" shouted Pam, losing her cool. David turned off the television and turned around, surprised that Pam lost her cool.
"Your husband was my father. And you never should have married him in the first place!" yelled back Alex.
"Don't you dare tell me what to do and what not to do. I could have easily sent you away to some boarding school. But I am here and working overtime so that you could go to school and have a comfortable life. Why the hell don't you understand that? You think you are having problems? Try being a single parent to a child like you, who is not even your own! I have tried my best with you. I understand that you lost your parents and all but that gives you no damn excuse to be downright rude and ungrateful!" a deadening silence followed Pam's words at the end of which Alex wordlessly turned around and ran to her room. Pam sighed and sat down, frustrated and disappointed with herself. David walked around and stood in front of Pam.
"I blew it! I was handling it right all along and I blew it now!" she whispered.
"Alex needed that. She has had more than enough time to pull herself together and be nice to you," said David, "I always thought you were too soft on her!"
"What did you expect me to be to a child who has lost both her parents in the span of six years?"
"I lost both parents in the span of six years and you don't see me behave badly!" reasoned David.
"You're different. Alex is a hot headed person and has not accepted me-"
"It's her problem! I think that what you did today was right Pam. She needed a taste of that! She needed a shock... don't fret too much over it! And let me go up and make sure my little sister has not wrecked her room in her anger!" said David, patting Pam on the back and turned to go upstairs.
He shook his head, vexed with his sister. So far Pam had been nothing but nice to her. She hadn't raised her voice even once and had accepted Alex's rebellious nature. He had always wanted to try a shock treatment with her but he had not known how to go about it. And now that it had come from Pam, he felt that its impact would be stronger, for Pam was hardly the person to raise her voice. His sister had worried him for a long time, ever since she had decided that she would do what she wanted. He still hadn't forgotten the first time she came down wearing those hideous clothes just because Pam had complimented her clothes the day before. It was only because he had faith in her friends that his worry lessened. She was so hot headed and there was no saying what she would do next⦠He knocked her door and waited for a response.
"Alex?" he called and knocked louder, "Alex, are you there?" he kept his ear close to the door, trying to listen for any sound from inside that told him his sister was there. When he heard nothing his heart quickened, apprehensive. "Alex, I'm coming in now!" and giving a moments gap he opened the door, glad that she hadn't locked it from inside. "Alex-" He stopped short when he saw that the room was empty. As an instinct he checked to see if she was there in the bathroom but the open door told him that she wasn't there either. He saw that the things by the window ledge had been thrown down hurriedly and the open window gave him the answer.

"Kevin! Kev⦠when is dad coming home?" asked Carol, his younger sister. Carol Taylor was five years younger to him. With long blonde hair and chubby cheeks, eleven year old Carol was indeed a cheerful spirit. Kevin's parents divorced when he was twelve and they both were living with their father. Their mother had a traveling job and being the career minded person she was, their parents had decided to split on good terms. The father hadn't remarried and it was just the three of them in the house.
"Well he said he had a late meeting and asked us to order pizza for dinner!" said Kevin as he lazily changed the channel and turned back to his math homework.
"I need to ask him to sign the permission form for the Class Trip next week to the California Zoo."
"Is Fred coming?" teased Kevin. Fred was Carol's classmate and they sort of liked each other.
"Everyone is going!" said Carol nonchalantly, dodging the assault, "By the way Kev, how's Rhea?" she asked innocently.
"Shut up!" he said, throwing a cushion at her. Carol caught the cushion and threw it back to him. The phone rang and Carol reached out for it.
"Yes⦠one minute, who shall I say is calling?" she covered the receiver with her hand and whispered to Kevin, "Kev, its David, Alex's brother!" Kevin frowned in confusion as he got up to take the call.
"Hello? Yea⦠what? No, she's not here⦠I'm coming over right now!" he hung up the phone and turned to Carol who was looking at him. "Carry, you can take care of yourself for half an hour? Actually, no," he said changing his mind, "You go and stay next door with Pam for half an hour and I'll be back. If you want to reach me, call my cell!"
"What happened?" she asked, as Kevin grabbed the key and rushed her out of the house.
"Alex and Pam had a major blowout and now she's missing!" he explained as he hurried her to Alex's house. He met David outside the house and sent Carol inside.
