Are these categories literal or just word limit based?

Like howler is a scolding letter from parent to child so that's what we're supposed to write or just a piece within 50 words on any HP theme?

Yes categories are literal and also you have to maintain the word limit for each category. Yeah in category 1, you have to write a "howler" as its in Potterverse but stick to the word limit. Similarly category 2, you've to write a love letter involving any Potterverse characters. In category 3, you can write microtales based on Potterverse. In category 4, you can write fake gossip stories (articles) being "Reeta Skeeter" yourself based on Potterverse and its characters. And category 4 is normal short FF on Potterverse.
