Finlay Donovan Is Killing It

Finlay Donovan is a writer, desperately in need of some money to hire a lawyer in order to get divorced, as well as take care of her kids without the financial help of her ex husband. She is in the middle of writing a murder novel when someone overhears and misunderstands her to be a contract killer. She gets an offer of a large sum of money in order to commit a murder and that's when her problems start. With every chapter, she gets more and more entangled in a web of trouble.

I found this concept to be very unique. I have read psychological thrillers before, but this was way different with a touch of comedy as well as mystery and suspense.

I loved the characters, especially Finlay and Vero. Even though Vero was initially a nanny for Finlay's kids, I loved how they later became partners in crime.

Another character I loved was Nick, and I so wanted to see more of him with Finlay.

The only problem that I felt was that there were too many characters which complicated the story a bit. I got confused, and sometimes it felt like the story was losing the plot. But all is well that ends well. Cosimano did manage to keep me guessing until the end! I loved how she managed to reveal the truth at the right time without dragging it too much.

Two books down.😆

Finished The Midnight Library. I think we'll be discussing the book at the end of the month?

I've picked up The Great Gatsby for my next read. I always struggle with the classics so much but I was able to find an audiobook on Librivox and I hope that'll help me get through it.

There will be no discussions as such since there are so many books. You can post a short review after you finish reading each book or book reviews of all the books you have read at the end of the month.

Thinking of cutting out a couple of genres from this list, any suggestions? Genres you are least likely to read and wouldn’t mind it being out of this list. We can either remove a couple of genres and replace it with others or just have a shorter list of genres to cover in the bookclub.

I shall highlight the genres we haven’t read so far.

  1. Contemporary Fiction
  2. Mystery & Thriller
  3. Historical Fiction
  4. Fantasy
  5. Romance
  6. Science Fiction
  7. Horror
  8. Non Fiction
  9. Memoirs & Autobiographies
  10. Mythology
  11. Indian/ Asian Literature
  12. Classics

I won't mind seeing Non fiction & Memoirs and Autobiographies go from the list 😅😅

I won't mind removing non-fiction or biographies from the list either. Specially nonfiction.

I have a suggestion, if it works for everyone. We can vote and select a fewer genres for every year or six months, so we'll have a focus. We can keep the most read ones constant, like romance, contemporary and thriller, and select one or two from the not-so-famous ones from which we can read once in a while. Maybe as an added option to the botm.

I was actually wondering when we'll have an Indian author's book. I think we did Asian with Murakami but not Indian.

Agree with all three of you when it comes to the genres that can be removed, especially Non fiction. I don’t hate it, it’s just that I would need 3-4 months to finish a book. As for memoirs and mythology, I don’t think I have read even a single book from these two genres.
Let’s see what the other members decide.

Good idea. We can try and implement this in some form.

Have had a book by an Indian author in mind for so long but the theme of the book is quite heavy so didn’t want to have that as a book club read when everything in the world is already depressing. I have a couple of other tentative names in mind and most probably in November we will read a book by an Indian author.

@all: A few questions for all of you (new members as well) -

Q. Was reading four books in a month too much or is it doable? I don’t intend on us reading four books in a month again, but I wanted to know.

Q. Are you on board with the idea of reading books of two different genres every alternate month (we could read and cover more genres that way)?

Q. Would you be okay with reading a chunker (book over 500 pages) in this book club over a period of one and half to two months?
