This thread is dedicated for all my various OS's on the character of Somada, the daughter of Lakshman and Urmila according to regional folklore. The existence of this character in history is debatable, even doubtful, but it is fun imagining the role she had in everyone's lives if she did exist, particularly that of Shri Ram. After Sita's vanvaas, Ram was all alone, despite being surrounded by supportive family, and in my imagination Somada was like the daughter he never had, and LakshMila were only too happy to share her with their beloved brother. 😉

All my OS's will have Somada and Ram as the main protagonists, but other family members will also make an appearance.

Disclaimer:
These stories are not meant to hut any religious sentiments. As they deal with God's incarnations, I will endeavor to keep them in character as much as possible, but since this is a fanfiction thread, some liberty will be taken.

~The Awkward Moment~

The Emperor of Ayodhya, Raghukul bhushan, Maharaj Ramachandra, strode down the brightly lit corridor in all his glory. His yellow silken robes billowed behind him, and the guards who stood in stringent lines across the corridor bowed low.

Holding his hand up in blessing, Shri Ram smiled and entered the apartments of his brother Lakshmana, and sister-in-law Urmila.

Quite an amusing sight met his eyes.

Little Somada, no older than eight years old, was standing on tiptoes as she attempted to peer through the keyhole of the closed doors to her parents' chamber.

*Ehem* Ram cleared his throat, his mouth quirked up in amusement.

Somada gasped and whirled around. "Jyesht Pitashree!" she exclaimed.

Ram put his finger to his lips, commanding silence in that soft, gentle way that was his.

Giggling, Somada let her uncle lead her away, and once they exited the apartments she turned around to face him.

"Jyesht Pitashree, I was trying to see what Ma and Pitaji were up to!"

"I can see that, young lady," Ram responded with raised brows, attempted sternness though his face softened as it often did when he was with his niece. She was the only daughter of all his brothers, and thus they all had a soft spot for her.

"Pitaji was hugging Ma!" Somada giggled, covering her mouth with her little hand.

"I see," Ram crossed his arms authoritatively, "And what were you doing, spying on them?"

"Nothing," Somada gave him a guilty look, but she could never lie to her uncle. No one could lie to Ram. It made them feel too guilty.

"Oh alright, I was waiting to see what else they would do!"

"Then it is a good thing I pulled you away when I did," Ram chuckled. "You will thank me when you are older."

"I never knew Pitaji was so romantic," Somada giggled, "He and Ma are always bickering!"

"My Lakhan and Urmi have always been like that," Ram shook his head with a smile, "But that father of yours has a romantic streak rarely anyone knows of, and I think he is entitled to his privacy when he is with his wife."

"But why?" Somada asked him curiously, "What else would they do, besides hug?"

*Ehem* Ram cleared his throat again, this time looking uncomfortable.

"Nothing...nothing you need to worry your pretty head over. Oh look, the stable master is here. What do you say to accompanying me on my daily rounds around the royal city?"

Somada knew her uncle was changing the subject on purpose, but neither would whining get her anywhere, not with her Jyesht Pitashree.

"A ride sounds just perfect," she said instead.

No matter, she would spy on her parents another day, when her Jyesht Pitashree was busy in the Raaj darbaar.

Father's Pain

It was a stormy night, and Somada could not sleep. Her heart felt restless.

Sitting up in bed, she flung her bedcovers aside and padded across the floor quietly, so as not to wake up her mother and father who slept in the next chamber.

'It feels like nature is in her element,' she thought, seeing the dark clouds outside and the pattering rain that created many puddles on the ground. If it was any other day, Somada would have wanted to jump into them, but not today.

Today, someone needed her, and her heart took her across the palace grounds. Ignoring the rain the pelted down on her in torrents, Somada entered the grand apartments of the King and nodded to the guards, who looked at her hesitantly.

Normally, they would bar entrance to anyone else at this time, but not to Princess Somada. She was allowed to go wherever she pleased in the palace, on the King's orders.

Somada entered her uncle's chamber and saw him hunched over a beautiful ornate dresser. It looked as if it belonged to a woman.

His fingers touched a jewelry box, and from its depths he pulled out several intricate bangles that glimmered in the candlelight.

Clasping the bangles to his chest, Ram closed his eyes and lets his tears flow.

Nighttime was the only time he let himself grieve. No one would see him there, in the emptiness of his own chamber. No one would worry about him.

To the world Ram put up a brave front. He did not shed a tear in the presence of others. He was the King of Ayodhya. His people depended on him to be strong and courageous. He could not let himself give into the strong urge to cry whenever he thought of Sita, and she was always in his mind.

He looked forward to nighttime, for he was finally allowed to grieve and recollect memories of his beloved Sita during their happiest days.

But not tonight.

Tonight, someone else was witness to his tears, and they created a chill in her heart.

Somada had never seen her uncle cry. He was the strongest man she knew. He ruled Ayodhya with a combination of firmness and kindness. He enforced rules, but he was fair in his justice.

Somada knew that her uncle grieved over the absence of her Jyesht Mata Sita. Everyone told her how great of a lady Sita was, how she showered everyone with kindness and warmth, how she filled the palace with love and laughter. Without her, Ayodhya was empty.

But she had never seen her uncle actually cry, and it was not something she liked to see. It was chilling. It was scary.

But most of all, it was heartbreaking, and it caused tears to stream down Somada's eyes.

Her weeping caused Ram to realize that someone was in the chamber with him.

Turning around, he looked shocked to see his little niece.

"Somada? What are you doing up so late? Does your mother know you are here?"

"Jyesht Pitashree!" Somada ran into his arms and buried her face in his neck as he lifted her up, hugging her close. "Don't cry, please don't cry!"

"Oh, my dear girl. Did I scare you?" Ram asked her tenderly.

Somada nodded her head, her eyes still streaked with tears.

"I know you are remembering Jyesht Mata Sita, but didn't you once tell me that she is the strongest lady you know?"

Ram nodded, giving her a warm smile as she snuggled into his lap.

"Then there is no reason to cry, for she is just fine!"

"I know," Ram told his niece with tenderness. "It is not for Sita that I weep. It is for myself. I do not know how I will go on without her, Somada."

"You have me," Somada told him lovingly, "And you have Ma, Pitaji, and my other aunts and uncles. Everyone is here for you, Jyesht Pitashree."

Seeing the little girl say those words with such pure love and innocence removed the sorrow from Ram's heart. How could he possibly continue to be sad, when he had the love of this darling girl? She was like his own daughter, and in the absence of his children she was his lifeline.

'Sitey, thank you for sending this girl to us,' he thought in his mind, snuggling the girl close to his chest and giving in to her demands for a bedtime story.

He settled her against the counterpane and told her about the princesses of Mithila, strong and courageous women who made the princes of Raghukul themselves victims of cupid's arrow.

Somada smiled. She loved this story, no matter how many times it was told.
