For us

Aap means giving respect.

I call aap to all my elders including my parents, relatives, seniors etc.

Well i do call my elders , unknown persons aap and parents as aap ( Tamil word for aap) in public but it's tum ( that word doesn't feel that informal in Tamil, even that sounds polite and respectful with the tone) in the house , but NEVER in publicsmiley36

Tum equivalent word in the house because we consider aap as too formal and too much formality means children maintain a distance from their parents ( said by the elders in my family , not sure of other families do this in secret)

Here in West Bengal we call only unknown people AAPNI & way too seniors with whom we share a very formal relationship we call them AAPNI.

Even we use TUMI equivalent to Tum for parents & elder brothers sisters.

Han sometimes In Laws ko as in Father/Mother in law ko we address AAPNI.

Even I got shocked knowing in Hindi they calls Parents as AAP smiley36
