Part 3- The end
“Simran di…please stop. I’ve to talk to you…something really important.” She held her blouse with a hand and rushed to talk to her. This was her only chance to escape.
She stood beside him, keeping a little distance… “Di wo…woo…I really need to talk to you… Please listen…”
“Please listen di… We were just talking…” with this he pulled Jasmine into his embrace and continued with an eager smile… “I know we have both done lots of wrongs, but now we want to make everything alright. We want us to be a very happy family. That’s all Jasmine wanted to say. Right jasso...”
Simran quickly walked away leaving two alone. She didn’t want to be in their presence any more than which was necessary.
Fateh then looked at Jasmine who cowered under his gaze. He smiled, a smile which didn’t reach his eyes and very clearly meant trouble for her. He shut the doors, and closed the curtains.
“So what was it that you wanted to say to Simran di…?” he raised his eyebrows.
“No…nothing. You finished my sentence. I wanted to say exactly the same…Now we’re a family na, so we should live with peace…with love. There’ve been so many misunderstandings, fights already…and we need to make it fine…because you know,we’re a family.”
Fateh’s demeanor changed for the first time. He cupped Jasmine’s face and wiped the tears from her cheeks. He smiled and said in a soft eager tone “You…you really mean this?Like you genuinely want to be a part of my family…our family? With honest intentions… like a proper daughter in law? Like Te…” he almost said her name and a pang hit him, but he quickly covered it with a smile.
Jasmine frowned, and tried to read him. What were the chances that he’s being honest? Was this a trick… Or was he really being honest? To be fair, he’d always been obsessive about his family a little bit too much…constantly worrying about their opinion and acceptance. Perhaps he was just upset about his family being so upset about losing their perfect daughter in law… Jasmine rolled her eyes. This family was really concerned with Tejo more than they’re with Fateh. However, right now, this seemed like the reason behind his absurd behaviour. Otherwise, there was no explanation really why Fateh, who has been enamoured by her since he saw her, would act like this.
“Fateh… I understand why you’re so upset… I understand why you’re acting like this. But trust me, we’ll make everything alright. I promise Fateh…before we leave for Canada, we’ll change this family into a happy one again…everything will be ok.”
Fateh smiled. Then he pushed her till they were both in front of the mirror, standing in front of it. He roughly threw her dupatta away, leaving her in a blouse which was threatening to fall anytime, leaving her in a very vulnerable situation. He continued… “Let me make something very clear Mrs Fateh Singh Virk…” He put his hands on her shoulders and pulled her close. A slight nudge and the unhooked blouse fell. She stood there, embarrassed, tears burning her cheeks. Fateh however was unmoved. Neither lust nor love… he had pure hatred in his eyes. He wrapped his hand around her neck and choked her slightly. “You will never ever mention Canada again. In fact, in the morning you’ll tell everyone how you’ve decided that you don’t want to go to Canada at all. You’re going to wake up sharp at 4, make an elaborate breakfast for the entire family, tell everyone that you’ve decided that you don’t want to go to Canada at all, and be a little good girl.”
With this he ran down his hands over her body, resting near her waist, as she froze in fear, her body going rigid. In a moment he undid the hooks and doris of her lehanga, and it fell on their feet. Jasmine shut her eyes as tears flowed and sobs escaped her throat.
Fateh pushed her chin up and forced her to open the eyes, maintaining eye contact with her in the mirror.
Then suddenly he backed away.
“God Jasmine… you’re so ugly I can’t even hatef**ck you. It’s because of people like you that people have sex in the dark.”
With this, Fateh picked up the bottle of rum and went to the balcony.
Jasmine fell down on the ground, unable to wrap her mind around anything.Suddenly there weren’t any more tears in her eyes. She did not have anymore ideas or schemes about what to do. The empty despair engulfed every emotion she had, unable to process anything, she simply stared into the emptiness.
