PART 12

Suraj : Imli?!

Her presence startled Suraj when he opened the main door.

Suraj : What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be at work?

Imli : (Upset by his response) I will tell you why I'm here but before that, why are you covered in chocolate? (Imli stretched her hand, trying to touch Suraj's face to wipe off the smudge but he stepped back).

Suraj : (Moving away from her) What are you trying to do, Imli? Why are you here? I don't remember asking you to come to my house.

Suraj obviously looked irritated with her sudden uninvited visit. She understood his reluctance, so she took an envelope from her handbag and handed it to him.

Imli : I am resigning my job at the Rajvanshi Steel Works, Suraj. You were not in the office, so I wanted to hand it to you directly.

Suraj : (Shocked) Resigning your job? But why? (Suraj examined the letter she has handed him).

Imli : I don't think I can work there anymore with you and Chakor being together, Suraj. I didn't know that you will continue your marriage with her. I thought we will move to a different stage in our relationship soon but it is not possible now, isn't it? (Suraj lifted his head up and faced Imli).

Suraj : Our relationship? Are you out of your mind?! What are you trying to say, Imli? You are well aware that we were acting like a couple, nothing more than that. I have only hugged you a few times, that too as a friend and I have never crossed any limits with you. The only real relationship we had was employer-employee related and I respect you as my best friend's sister.

Imli : (Eyes welled up) You never had any feelings for me?

Suraj : (Her tears lowered his tone. He never wanted to hurt her) Not besides the ones I mentioned just now, Imli. And what all these has to do with your job? I hired you because you are qualified. I am not accepting your resignation. Please get back to work.

Imli : No! (She yelled)

Suraj : (Taken aback) Excuse me?!

Imli : You may have seen me just as an employee or a friend but to me, you were more than that. You can't simply get rid of me just because you suddenly like Chakor now. (Her tone changed to rough and forceful).

Suraj : Okay, you need to calm down, alright. I never did anything to you till you react this way.

Imli : You're with Chakor now! After all that I did to help you get rid of her, you threw me away for her! That's nothing for you?!

She raised her voice much to his disbelief. Their voices were loud enough to be heard by Chakor in the kitchen.

Chakor : What's happening here? Why is Imli here, Suraj? (Chakor interrupted, fairly looking shocked to see Imli here)

Imli : Oh, now I get it! You are acting innocent because your wife is here? She is covered in chocolate too, what a beautiful view! Did I interrupt something?! (Imli mocked and that infuriated Suraj)

Suraj : Imli, you better stay in your limits. You came here to give me your resignation, right? Your job is done. You can leave now.

Imli : Why do you want me to leave, Suraj? Are you planning a romance session with your wife? Tired of romancing with me?

Her words obviously hit the right spot as Chakor looked upset by it. Suraj has had enough. Before he could say something, Chakor retaliated.

Chakor : What's your problem, Imli? Why are you making a scene here? Whatever Suraj and I do is none of your business. Now leave! (She extended her left arm, directing Imli to the exit)

Imli : I am leaving, Mrs. Rajvanshi but remember, your husband is not as good as you think he is. He used me to get rid of you and soon he will do the same to you.

Suraj : Okay, that's it! Enough! One more word from you and I'll forget that you're my best friend's sister, Imli! Your resignation is accepted, now, get out!

His anger was visible on his face as he turned crimson. Imli has not seen Suraj in that state before and she was petrified to utter anything that would provoke him. She looked irritably at Chakor and Suraj before making her way to the exit. "You will pay for this, Suraj," she pledged to herself and made a move.

Imli's word hurt Chakor more than she thought it would but she hid it from Suraj. She didn't want to prolong this incident as her intention was to fix this marriage, not damage it more. Suraj closed the main door and turned to face his wife.

Suraj : Chakor...

Chakor : Yes, Suraj.

Suraj : Are you upset with what Imli said? (He sincerely asked to make sure Chakor is okay)

Chakor : I would be lying if I say that I am not upset but her actions are the consequences of the drama that you have staged, Suraj. You dragged her into this to kick me out of your life. Now you're trying to get me back into your life and if that upsets her, she is right.

Suraj : What? Are you taking her side now?

Chakor : I am taking the side of the truth, Suraj. She is a young woman. I have seen you hug her multiple times infront of me. You have spent ample amount of time with her to distress me. Isn't that right?

Suraj : Yes, I did but Imli knows that it was all a drama. I never gave her any wrong signals and I have never did anything to her that would make her react like what she did just now. (He defended himself).

Suraj was right. The only time he spent with Imli was the ones in the office or at the company cafeteria. He had never took her out on a date; he had never promised her anything as it was just a drama for him.

Chakor : Stop defending yourself, Suraj! If a guy as charming as you approach a woman, spend time with her, hug her, won't she feel affected? After all, she is a normal woman with feelings. She isn't a robot.

Suraj : (Puzzled by her justification) So, I am responsible for her feelings now?

Chakor : That's not what I meant, Suraj. What I mean is you are wrong for using her. She knows about it or not, YOU USED HER and that is wrong! You should be apologizing to her.

Suraj : Excuse me, what?! I should be apologizing to Imli? On what basis? She agreed to this drama. Nobody forced her. So, keep your 'jagat matha' thoughts to yourself, Mrs. Chakor Suraj Rajvanshi!

Chakor : Did you just call me 'jagat matha'?! You are full of nonsense and you're a 'pakhandi', Suraj! All this started because of you!

She pointed her right index finger at him; Suraj entwined it with his left index finger and pulled her close. He was forceful enough till her body touched his, making it easy for him to use his right hand to grab her waist and lift her up. Her feet were a few inches above the ground as he looked intensely into her eyes.

Suraj : I didn't do anything to cheat her, Chakor, believe me.

His breath was so close to hers till she almost went crazy with the smell of his cologne and the sense of intimacy he was giving her.

Chakor : (Tried pulling her index finger away from his but failed) My God, Suraj! How strong can you be?! Put me down before I break your nose, 'pakhandi'!

Suraj : (His eyebrows rose as notch) 'Pakhandi' again? Okay, 'jagat matha', not before you say, please.

Chakor : Ufff!!! Please, Suraj, put me down. (She struggled to get away but he was stronger)

Suraj : (Smirked at her and let her down gently) Anyways, I have something to ask you.

Chakor : What?

Suraj : Did you call me charming just now?

Chakor : (Gulped, tried to hide the fact that she actually said that) When did I say that? I don't recall it. (She turned her back facing Suraj, trying to cover her blushed face)

He stepped closer and hugged her from the back. She didn't even try to push him away or to break his hug. It felt good and, it's okay if friends hug, she thought. Chakor could just smile.

Suraj : You did say I am charming, but it's okay if you can't recall it. The next few months will prove to you who I really am. Till then, I'll wait. (He gave a soft peck on her left cheek and let go of her)

Chakor : We'll see. (She smiled at him naughtily)

Suraj : (Before walking away to clean the mess they made in the kitchen, he stopped to clarify something to his wife) One more thing. I will try to make sure what happen in the kitchen does not repeat again, Chakor. I know we both wanted to take it slow but as you said, we need to keep away from our physical necessities for now and maintain as friends, atleast till we both are sure about our feelings for each other. Is it okay with you, Chakor?

She was totally dumbfounded with his response. Chakor thought Suraj would always behave impulsively and he would drag her back to the kitchen counter to continue with whatever they were doing but she was wrong. He is not as impulsive and immature as she thought him to be. This side of him impressed her. "Thank you, Suraj,' was all she said.

The next two months of their lives turned out to be a mixture of joy & sadness, anger & fear, trust & distrust and surprise & anticipation. Besides being focused on work as he used to be, Suraj spent his evenings with Chakor and they made it a habit to have breakfast and dinner together. His day started with giving a bouquet of tulips to his wife and a soft kiss on her cheeks. He never stopped teasing her and although it made Chakor angry and eventually they end up fighting, what happens after the fight made them care for each other more than before. They gave each other freedom in this relationship as they continued to have their outings with friends every now and then; Chakor with Gauri and Suraj with RV. Despite what happened between him and Imli, RV took Suraj's side, maintaining their friendship.

One weekend, Suraj was 200 kilometres away from Chakor to attend RV's birthday party. He requested her to follow him but she refused as she wanted him to have guys' day out. She never controlled him to be around her all the time and that quality of hers made him like her even more. As he was away, Chakor enjoyed her time alone, cleaning the house, reading her favourite Agatha Christie novel and in the evening, Gauri picked her up for a dinner date. There, they met someone from the past who told something that changed her opinion about Suraj forever.

Tina : Oh my God! Chakor, is that you?!

Chakor : (Turned around to see who it is) Tina? Hey, hi! How are you? So long no see! (She extended her arms and embraced her)

Tina : I am fine, girl! How have you been? And who is this? (Pointing at Gauri)

Chakor : I'm good too. Meet Gauri, my best friend. (Chakor introduced them to each other)

Both Tina and Gauri greeted each other and shared a brief hug. Tina's eyes observed Chakor from top to bottom and was surprised to see the vermilion on her hairline and the 'mangal sutra' around her neck.

Tina : Are you married, girl? And you didn't even invite me?! (She pouted her lips, indicating displeasure)

Gauri : Awww (she laughed). Well, she... married... kind of... (she giggled)

Chakor : Stop it, Gauri! Yes, I am married, Tina. Sorry, couldn't invite because it was a small family function. Only a few close friends were invited besides family.

Tina : It's okay! (She hugged her but continued with her interrogation) Tell me about your husband. From the glow on your face, I guess he made you the happiest woman in the world, right?

Gauri giggled again. Only she knows what Suraj and Chakor are up to but Tina was right, Chakor was glowing since she and Suraj decided to give their marriage a try.

Chakor : Well, you know him. It's Suraj.

Tina : (Her eyes shrunk with puzzled look) Which Suraj are you talking about?

Chakor : Well, the only Suraj I know besides the one up in the sky is, Suraj Rajvanshi, the striker of our University football club.

Tina's mouth gaped open, her palms covering it. She could not believe what Chakor has said.

Tina : You mean THE SURAJ RAJVANSHI?! The hot guy that we were all after?

Chakor : (Cleared her throat) The hot guy? Really, Tina? I don't recall any memories of me going after him in the university.

Tina : Aik! I didn't mean you. I meant most of our batch mates, you know, the girls who went 'huu haa' whenever he's on the field, playing or training. He is such a Romeo. But I knew it!

Chakor : (Clearly apathetic in the way she was praising Suraj) Knew what, Tina?

Tina : Knew that Suraj will eventually end up with you. Everybody knows how he looks at you and protects you.

Chakor burst out into laughter when Tina stated that. Gauri could not really understand what's happening between these two, so she excused herself to get herself some ice cream.

Chakor : Suraj?! Protected me?! Really?! (she continued to laugh)

Tina : You mean, you don't know? He hasn't told you anything?

Chakor : Tell me what, Tina? (She gazed at Tina in disbelieve)

Tina : Well... ever wondered why the seniors never ragged you? When all of us were forced to do some crazy stunts during orientation, you escaped, remember??

Chakor : Yes. So what?

Tina: Well...That was because of Suraj Rajvanshi...

Chakor recalled those days and it suddenly clicked her mind. Tina was right. The seniors never did rag her.

Chakor : I don't get it, Tina. I never thought about it but how is Suraj related to it? He was a junior too, remember? Just one semester ahead of us.

Tina : Yes, but he joined the football team during the first semester, and had the advantage over the rest of us. Gosh, you don't know all this?!

Chakor : To be honest, NO. I never paid attention to him in university.

Tina : Well, let's just say that he used that advantage to put you in the safe zone. He was always there behind you, that's why no one dared to cause you any trouble.

Chakor's heart was beating fast. Why would he protect me from the seniors if he disliked me since childhood?

Tina : There's more. Remember one day you fainted during training and you ended up in the hospital? Whatever we told you about that incident wasn't really true. Suraj was the one who took you to the hospital, not the ambulance. He was there till you open your eyes and then he left. We all kind of lied to you because you know, it's Suraj who told us to and defying him is like inviting trouble for ourselves.

Chakor sat on the nearby bench, confusion clearly visible on her face. All these while, she thought Suraj hated her since childhood but all he did was protect her and take care of her when she least expected it. She felt her chest tighten, a strong indescribable emotion start gushing through her heart, and it felt right. Suraj felt right to her.

Tina : There are plenty more stories about the Romeo, you know. His weekend parties with his rich and hot girlfriends... I always wondered what he does with all of them, such a playboy he was... I can't really believe that he settled down but I am glad it was with you. (she laughed but looking at Chakor's face which was turning sour, she stopped). I'm sorry, Chakor, I didn't mean to upset you. I thought you know about Suraj since you both are married.

Chakor : (Frowned) You are just stating the fact, aren't you? Why would I be upset then?

Gauri joined soon after and all three of them had dinner together. Chakor's mind was thinking about Suraj and she couldn't take control of it any longer. These two months, Suraj has been a very good friend to me; he was always there to comfort me when I was down; he fights with me in a very funny way whenever I'm in the mood for some trouble; I was always his priority, but looks like I have ALWAYS been his priority since our University days. But... but I never knew of him as a playboy. Why do I feel uneasy when Tina told me about your girlfriends? Were you really a philanderer, Suraj? But why were you protecting me if you had many other girls in your life? Why didn't you tell me all these, Suraj? Why does the thought of you with other girls hurt me so much? Is this how jealousy feels like? But then, you are very nice to me now. Why do I smile when I think about you? Why do I feel happy to see your face first thing in the morning? Why do I feel quashed when you are away from me, Suraj? Is this what I think it is? Am I finally in love with you, Suraj Rajvanshi? Her mind was playing riddles with her but with no answers. She wanted to meet Suraj as soon as possible. He will be back tonight and all she wanted to do is hug him tight and tell him she missed him too much. Sudden thought about Tina mentioned about his girlfriends bothered her. Suraj Rajvanshi was indeed a mystery during their university days. She never did ask about his past before, but it intrigued her today.

Chakor eagerly waited for Suraj to knock on their main door. It has been almost 36 hours without him and she felt suffocated. The ringing of the doorbell sounded like a music in her ears. She jerked off the sofa, rushed to open the main door, just to see a very exhausted Suraj. Seeing him made her feel good. Suraj grinned pass his tired face at his beautiful wife. He drew her closer to him and hugged her tight. "I missed you so much, baby," he said, continued rubbing her back, sending warmth throughout her body. Chakor wanted to tell him she too missed him very much but she was out of words. "I think you should go to your room, take a shower and rest, Suraj. I have prepared some food for you. If you're hungry, come down to grab a bite," was all she said as she break off the hug and moved away further.

"That's it?" Suraj scuffed her shoulder. I am back after almost two days and that's the best you could offer? Not even a 'I miss you too, pakhandi'?" he sounded disappointed. "I just want you to get freshen up, Suraj. You look..." He cut her off by pulling her head onto his chest. "Shh, don't say anything. Can you listen to my heartbeat, Chakor? You have no idea what I was going through these two days without you. I have not felt this before with anyone but you don't seem to get it, don't you?" his chest shook as he whispered. His words meant alot to her. It sounded like a confession which she could not grasp. She felt her heart race at their close proximity, and snuggled deeper into his chest.

"Getting comfortable, are we?" he smirked as he said that. Chakor blushed and pulled herself away instantaneously. "It's okay if the ladies want to use me as their pillow," he grinned, much to her displeasure. Chakor frowned. Her heart did a jealous little bump as she thought, Ladies? How many ladies are you talking about, Suraj? Was Tina right about your party freak nature and multiple girlfriends stuff? You just said ladies but it's just me and you here. Am I the only woman in your life, Suraj? Or are you preparing my heart to break it later?
